1 Big Energy Saving Network Members Guide to Ning What is Ning? Ning is an online platform where social networks can interact easily around one common interest or issue. The Big Energy Saving Network Ning site can be found at: Aims and overview of the Big Energy Saving Network Ning website: The site is a place to find and share information on planning, hosting and improving outreach events and training delivered for the Big Energy Saving Network. Specifically it is for Network Champions and Volunteers who will be organising BESN outreach events to share energy saving advice; ask questions about planning and running events; share how to engage community members; and cover any other challenges faced when hosting events. Useful content and information will be posted for Champions and Volunteers to access and utilise in the running of their events. The website: When you view the site you will see there are five navigation pages: 1. Home 2. My Page 3. News 4. Photos 5. Discussion- hidden 6. Your Events 7. BESN Resources - hidden

2 On the left hand side is a description of the Big Energy Saving Network. The rest of the page is filled with automatically updated member activity such as the latest news, blog posts, images or details of events. Home On the home page, the latest News, Events, Photos and BESN Resource posts will be shown. Click the headers to see the full post. My Page My Page is for members only. To become a member you will need to sign up with your address. Once you join as a member this page will become visible to you, as will extra pages called Discussion and BESN Resources. My Page acts as your personal profile. It shows your latest activities, photo, blog posts and comments. It also shows discussions you have started and your comment wall. Your comment wall is a place where you can leave your fellow members comments, share links, images or videos. News News will host the latest updates related to the Big Energy Saving Network. These can be posted by members of the Network, but administrators will approve these posts to ensure they are as relevant and current as possible to other members. For example, news posts can relate to running events, energy saving advice and engagement and post-event commentaries. 2

3 Photos In this section post photos of your event to share with others. All members can post photos here which will be approved before going live to ensure quality and relevance. Discussion Here members can start discussions which other members can contribute to through a thread of commentary. Members can ask specific questions about planning and hosting events as well as giving advice to the questions of others. To contribute to a discussion click on the discussion s title and the whole post and comments will appear. The newest comment is at the top of the thread. There is a text box where you can write your comments and join discussions. On the right hand side above the post you can click the star shape button to favourite or like a discussion. Your Events In the Your Events section, all members may post details of their Big Energy Saving Network events that are taking place across the UK. Members are encouraged to provide as much detail about their event as possible. This is a great opportunity to profile your activities with other members of the BESN. 3

4 How to add content (news, photo, discussion, event) To add content to the News, Discussion and Your Event pages, click the plus sign (+) in the upper right hand side of of each page. Clicking on this will navigate you to a text box where you can enter text, images and links. For News, Discussions, Events: Enter your post s title and the detail you wish to include about your event / information. Press preview to see how your post will look. Then press publish to make it live. Default items are published instantly but you can time them so they go live at a specific time. For example you might want to write a post that will go live one week before your event takes place. 4

5 To add photos Click the plus (+) sign on the photos page. This will open a window on your desktop and you can find the photo file that you want to upload to the website. Select the image and press open. You will then be directed to an area where you can add a title and text for your image. You may only add one image at a time. Click the right hand corner of the image to rotate if required. Then click publish to make live. To add resources: To add useful resources to the BESN Resources page, such as posters, guidance or anything you have used and found useful that others in the Network might find valuable too, go to the BESN Resources page and click the + button in the top right corner. From here you can write about your resources and use the link, image and attach (paper clip) buttons just below the Post Title box to add files from your computer to the Ning site that others can then download. 5
