3 Document Overview This document is a quick reference guide that supports using Lynda.com for curriculum development at Bow Valley College. The document contains an overview of practices for embedding Lynda.com video training content within new or existing curriculum within Brightspace (D2L). TLE offers support for using Lynda.com video training content in any curriculum development project. For additional information, contact tle@bowvalleycollege.ca or speak with the TLE embedded consultant in your academic unit. 2
4 Embedding Lynda.com content in Brightspace (D2L) This section contains information about how to embed Lynda.com video content within a Brightspace course shell. Embedding Lynda.com video training content in Brightspace The majority of course segment videos are restricted for embedding in Brightspace, however, exceptions of unrestricted content, such as Lynda.com course welcome videos, do exist. Look for the lock icon next to the embed code in the SHARE tab to identify restricted content. Video content displaying a lock icon cannot be directly embedded in Brightspace. E.g., 3
5 Embedding Lynda.com course welcome videos in Brightspace It is possible to embed a Lynda.com course welcome video in Brightspace. Use course welcome videos to introduce students to a specific Lynda.com course or video segment linked separately in Brightspace. Steps for embedding Lynda.com course welcome videos in Brightspace 1. To embed a course welcome video in Brightspace, start by opening two separate internet browser tabs for Brightspace and Lynda.com respectively. 2. In the Lynda.com tab, navigate the website to the specific Lynda.com course content you would like to embed. Select the first video in the course table of contents, likely titled the Welcome video. 3. Next, go to the SHARE tab and copy the embed code located under the heading EMBED THIS VIDEO by pressing the COPY button. The code will copy automatically to your clipboard. 4
6 4. Open the course shell in Brightspace. Navigate to the CONTENT BROWSER or press the CONTENT heading to choose a location or module for embedding the Lynda.com media. If necessary, add a new module. 5. Once you have opened the correct module for embedding, click on the NEW button a select the VIDEO OR AUDIO tool from the dropdown menu. 5
7 6. The interface for embedding video or audio media will open 7. Click into the WEB VIDEO OR AUDIO tab and paste the Lynda.com embed code by pressing CTRL +V on your keyboard. 8. Add a title and click on the ALLOW button. 6
8 9. Click SAVE to embed the video. The video will render in the content page you created. 10. When you press the play button inside the embedded video, the Lynda.com course welcome video content will play directly in Brightspace. All Lynda.com video training content viewer features (such as volume control, pause or play buttons, etc.) will also be available within the target frame of the embedded video. 7
9 Embedding a link to Lynda.com courses in Brightspace Another method for sharing Lynda.com video training content in Brightspace is by embedding a link to this content using a URL hyperlink. By providing a link to a Lynda.com course in Brightspace, you will facilitate direct access to a specific set of content on the Lynda.com site. When linking a Lynda.com course in D2L it is critical that students are given specific information on what to use and clarification about where they will use it. This is not much different than how you are already using a textbook in one or more of your courses. Identifying specific videos, modules or topics to watch in a Lynda.com course is similar to asking students to read a specific section or set of pages from a chapter in a textbook. Importantly, anytime that you embed a link to a full Lynda.com course in Brightspace, the course will open in a new window and play directly from the Lynda.com site. All users accessing a Lynda.com course using a Brightspace link are automatically logged into Lynda.com. Additionally, each video will begin playing the Welcome video each time the link is accessed. Steps for embedding a link to a Lynda.com course in Brightspace 1. Using the Lynda.com website, choose a Lynda.com course for linking in Brightspace. Open the course. 2. Click on the welcome or introduction video within this course. Click on the SHARE button. 3. Copy the SHARE THIS COURSE WITHIN YOUR ORGANIZATION link by clicking the COPY button. 8
10 4. Open the course shell in Brightspace and navigate to the CONTENT BROWSER or press the CONTENT heading to choose a location or module for embedding the Lynda.com media. If necessary, add a new module. 5. Once you have opened the correct module for embedding, click on the NEW button a select the CREATE A LINK tool from the dropdown menu. 9
11 6. The interface for creating a link to external media will open. Create a TITLE for the link. Paste the Lynda.com link in the URL section and click on OPEN AS EXTERNAL RESOURCE checkbox. Click CREATE. 7. The link the to the Lynda.com course video will render in the content page you created. 10
12 8. When the OPEN IN NEW WINDOW button is clicked the link will open in a new window directly in the Lynda.com site. 11
13 Embedding a link to a specific Lynda.com course video in Brightspace To embed a link to a specific Lynda.com course video in Brightspace, you must follow the same steps as linking an entire Lynda.com course, however, under SHARE you will choose to copy the video URL link instead of the course URL. Steps for embedding a link to a specific Lynda.com course video in Brightspace. 1. Using the Lynda.com website, choose a Lynda.com course for linking in Brightspace. Open the course. Navigate to the video that you would like to link from the CONTENTS menu. 2. Click on the desired video segment within this course. Click on the SHARE button. 3. Copy the SHARE THIS VIDEO WITHIN YOUR ORGANIZATION link by clicking the COPY button. 12

17 Sharing Lynda.com videos using a URL hyperlink All Lynda.com video training content can also be shared as a URL hyperlink that is attached to an or a news item (among other options). To share, simply copy the desired URL hyperlink (course or video) using the SHARE function on the Lynda.com website. Once copied, this URL hyperlink can be pasted into an message sent from D2L or part of a news items post sent to your learners. 16
18 Using Lynda.com notebook functions in Brightspace Lynda.com allows its users to make notes as they watch video training content using the NOTEBOOK feature. Within the notebook, each note that is created is time stamped to the moment a user begins typing. This feature allows users to match noteworthy thoughts, comments or questions with the Lynda.com video training content they are watching. Additional information about using the notebook feature is available on Lynda.com. Using the transcription function in a Lynda.com course Lynda.com video training content features a transcription of all voice-over recording within a course. This feature allows Lynda.com users to read the text heard aloud in each segment of a Lynda.com course. Use the TRANSCRIPT tab under the video content viewer to access the transcription feature. In addition to the text being highlighted as it is spoken aloud, the transcript uses an auto-scroll feature so that so users can easily keep track of the content as it is being delivered. If users click on a specific word in the transcript, the video will automatically go that point and continue playing. Using Lynda.com (general information) For more information about using Lynda.com, please refer to the How to Use Lynda.com video available on the Lynda.com website. 19 Terminology Lynda.com course Lynda.com video content that has been assembled as an entire course rather than only one individual piece of video content. Each Lynda.com course is made up of a course welcome video and individual course segment videos that are separated by topics, chapters or modules, or assembled together for viewing. When using the Lynda.com Library and Search tool, courses are most often returned. Lynda.com course welcome video A short (approx secs) course segment video that provides a preview of a specific Lynda.com course. This video is often labelled as welcome or introduction in Lynda.com. This video is always publically accessible and is unrestricted for embedding in Brightspace. Lynda.com course segment video An individual video segment of Lynda.com course content that is focused on one or a limited number of related course topics. Unlike the course welcome video, a course segment video cannot be embedded in Brightspace directly and must be linked to open as an external resource in a separate browser window. 18
