1 CS 120 Digital Literacy, Chapter 5: p CS 120, Digital Literacy, Ch 5, p.1 Browsing & Searching the Internet: Web browser a software program that is used to display web pages. IE, Safari, Firefox, Chrome this course uses IE-8 Browsing: the term that describes viewing of web pages Tabbed browsing a feature that allows the user to open multiple web sites in a single browser window. Switch between the sites by clicking the different tabs. Surfing the process of navigating the internet, looking for something specific or anything interesting. It implies moving quickly from one item to another Blog short for web log, it is an online journal used to publish personal or company information Home page the first page that is displayed when you open a browser o Home page for a particular site is the page that the page owner sets for its starting point for the site Address Bar at the top where a site s location is displayed URL Uniform Resource Locator. The address that uniquely identifies a site. o Begins with o Often ends with.html or.htm o Html hypertext mark-up language o http HyperText Transfer Protocol represents a set of rules that your computer uses to connect with servers on the web o Domain name an organization s unique name on the internet. Two types: Top-level domain extensions such as.com,.org,.edu or.gov Country code extension such as.uk for United Kingdom Locate these items: Forward, Back, Recent pages buttons New Tab button Search box Command Bar Favorites Quick tabs button displays a thumbnail of each site open (sized according to number open) Tab list button displays a list of open sites, in order of when opened, see complete name, can choose Refresh button Stop button Status bar point to IE icon and see thumbnails for open tabs Close Tab button Address bar when you start typing the computer will start searching your history, favorites and RSS feeds for matching entries and you can click a match to avoid retyping Close internet button close all tabs choice
2 CS 120, Digital Literacy, Ch 5, p.2 Web Sites: Navigation bars groups of links on a web page (typically at top or left side CTRL + link opens a new tab but does not display the new tab CTRL + SHIFT + link opens a new tab and displays that new tab Color coded tabs indicate they are related CTRL + T opens a new tab Point to tab, right-click to close the tab (useful when tab not open) Favorites: List of links to web sites saved Quick access to sites visited often Favorites button yellow star, Add to Favorites bar Adding a folder name: o Go to Tools/Explorer Bars (Favorites, Feeds, History) o Add to favorites o Add current tabs to favorites o Enter a folder name to organize and group your sites o Once added a folder name will appear in the create in drop-down list This means you can make folders and subfolders Organize favorites use to create, rename, and rearrange your folders, subfolders, move sites to folders, etc. Favorites Bar: Toolbar that is below the address bar you can add or drag addresses to this bar o drag - black line appears to show where the new favorite will appear o Right-click to rename the entries in the Favorites bar (shorten) o Right-click to delete an entry o Favorites are sometimes called Bookmarks History: Collection of the addresses you have visited Speeds up browsing IE stores these types of info.: o Temporary Internet files copies of web pages, images and media you have downloaded from the web o Cookies a small text file that sites put on your computer to store info. about your preferences. o History of sites you have visited o Info you enter into a web site o Saved passwords Command Bar Safety button o Delete browsing history use this to clear out the info stored o Deletes temporary files, browsing history, cookies and saved passwords InPrivate Browsing: Allows you to browse the Web without storing data about your browsing session o When you click for New Tab see screen for an InPrivate session o Session opens in a new window o InPrivate session is noted at that left of the address bar o When session is closed all history, temp files, form data, saved passwords and cookies are deleted
3 CS 120, Digital Literacy, Ch 5, p.3 Print, Zoom & Change Text size: Print: o Command Bar Print button o Print/Print Preview : Page Set-up: margins, orientation, header/footer, fonts Pages to print Print size custom, may set your own % Zooming & Changing text size: o Command Bar Page button Zoom choose size CTRL + mouse wheel zoom in and out Button in lower right corner quick zoom Text size medium is default, affects only text, not graphics Set by creator of page, may not allow change Full screen mode hides all Toolbars, gives more space on screen On/Off using F11 Saving/ ing Web page information: Good way to capture info you want to use later (e.g. a graphic) Protected by copyright laws, need permission to use o Fair Use Guidelines exception to allow use of small amounts of information for educational purposes o CITE sources! Right-click, Save Picture As or Print Picture Save entire page Command Bar/Save As o format Webpage complete saves all formatting, graphics, frames, style sheets o format Webpage archive, single file saves all info in a single file o format Webpage, HTML only saves HTML page without graphics, sounds, etc. o format Text file saves only the text a page Page button o Send page by sends the entire page in the text of an o Send link by inserts a link in an Manage Add-ons: A program that adds features to a web browser Toolbars, animated mouse pointers, interactive content, etc. Some installed with Win7, otherwise need permission to install Command Bar/Tools/Manage Add-ons o Currently loaded button o All Add-ons select one, disable button o Run w/o permission pre-approved o Digital signature to verify publisher of a file, ensures that file has not changed (not verified in Publisher column means not digitally signed) o Downloaded Controls ActiveX controls Technology for interactive web content Sometimes yellow bar under the toolbar displays information about pop-up blocker, downloads, ActiveX Use caution downloads could be security risk
4 CS 120, Digital Literacy, Ch 5, p.4 Searching the Internet SAFELY: Type a search term in the search box upper right corner Search provider a web site that provides search capability o Microsoft default BING o Google o AVG Secure Search o Yahoo o Amazon Search Box Find more providers o Make default Manage Add-ons ALT + ENTER search results in a new tab, allows you to keep several searches o Planning a trip, search Honolulu hotels and Honolulu restaurants using ALT+ENTER Right side of screen sponsored links, means paid advertisement (how they earn revenue) Use quotations for searching specific phrases must find exact phrase o Otherwise will find any page containing the word in any order FIND or GO in address bar search o IE-9 set to search in the address bar RSS feed: Really Simple Syndication format for gather information Blogs and news sites XML feed, syndicated content or Web feed Frequently updated, list of articles, headlines, summaries, date and time stamp Advantage can view from your favorite sites rather than going to the site and scanning for info. o For instance, you can see news as it updates rather than going to a news site and checking How to: o Get an RSS viewer or feed reader a program that displays RSS feeds, many available, one included in IE o Subscribe to the feeds you want. Web sites let you know if you can syndicate their content with an orange button. Clicking the button adds the feed to your reader list. o Go to: Oregonstate.edu Click orange button in Command Bar Choose a feed Subscribe Click on Favorites (star) in upper right corner Now you see feeds tab with your subscription included Hover over your feed and screen tip will appear Can add Gadget to your desktop right-click Feeds are usually free
5 Web Slices, Accelerators, and Suggested Sites: CS 120, Digital Literacy, Ch 5, p.5 Web slice a specific portion, slice, of a Web page that you can subscribe to and see when updated... such as daily temperature. o When subscribed an icon appears on the Favorites bar, when updated link is bold. o Weather, traffic, sports scores are popular web slices o iegallery.com can search for Web Slices Accelerators feature displays a blue Accelerator icon when you select text from any Web page. When clicked enables you to do certain tasks (e.g. finding a map) o Select text on a web page (address) o Click the blue button (with arrow) for options Pop-up Blocker enabled by default o Blocks any pop-up windows from opening o Tools/Pop-up blocker can change settings o Can allow from chosen sites o Information Bar appears at the top of the screen if pop-ups are blocked or ActiveX needed, etc. Malware: Malicious Software IE protected mode makes it more difficult for malware to be installed on your computer o Prevents a downloaded program from making changes to your computer without your permission o Protected mode is on by default Windows Defender spyware scanning and removal tool included in Win7 o On by default o You can set the options o Ignore, quarantine, remove or always allow o Control Panel search Defender Protecting your Data: Certificate a digital document that verifies identity of person or indicates security of a website o Certification Authorities companies that issue certificates Phishing a technique used to trick computer users into revealing personal or financial info. through or websites SmartScreen Filter IE feature to help detect phishing.
