Introduction This guide has been produced to help you ensure that all mark schemes are fit for publication. At the end of the process when the mark scheme is submitted there are some elements that are crucial for their publication to ensure consistency. Before submitting the mark scheme, please check the following: Compatibility MS word 2010 Correct Template please ensure the mark scheme template is used. Headers & Footers please check the unit number, component number, exam series and page numbers are correct Table heading rows repeated on every page Question Numbers bold and split into appropriate columns Images please ensure where possible the original image is used, and that the image is clear and of good quality Line Spacing should be single throughout One Line space please inserte a line at the end of each question/row Font Use Arial 11 font unless specialist subject (eg A level Maths, or languages), then use specialist font as appropriate. Justification text should be left justified Tabs, indents and bullets should be set to 1cm Use of eg, ie, no full stops between eg and ie; en-dash no spaces when used with numbers Spell Check please ensure documents are spell checked prior to submitting. Pagination and split answers - long answers to be split at an appropriate point please use your professional judgement; try to avoid Widows/Orphans, ie do not leave 1 line on its own at the bottom or top of a page. Lines remove any spare lines Consistency all mark schemes must be consistent in terms of styling. It is particularly important to have consistency across units per subject and across a suite of specifications. Mark Scheme Guidance

Setting Document style to Normal. All Mark schemes should be set using Normal style and the default font set to Arial 11pt (with the exceptions of GCE Maths and Science). In case the mark scheme appears in a different font/looks unusual, it is important to check what the normal style has been set to. Different versions of Microsoft word have their normal style and default font set to a particular font - eg, Word 2003, the default font is Times New Roman; in Word 2007 and 2010 it is Calibri, with extra paragraph spacing. Instructions on checking and changing the Normal style and default font: 1) Click in the Styles and Formatting button in the formatting control bar to open the Styles and Formatting panel. Notice how the normal style is in the default style of Times New Roman 12pt: 4 Mark Scheme Guidance 2016

2) In the Styles and Formatting panel, right click on the Normal style to bring up a down a drop down menu, and from that menu select modify. 3) This will bring up the Modify Style editing box. You will see here the options to edit the style, including front, which is currently set for Times New Roman 12pt. Mark Scheme Guidance

4) To Change these simply use the drop down menus to select Arial from the fonts menu and 11pt from the size menu. Also click on New documents based on this template and press ok. Having this style with these settings in all your OCR documents will help prevent formatting errors from appearing when your document is edited or when text is transferred from one document to another 6 Mark Scheme Guidance 2016

Formatting a Mark Scheme Front Cover Layout Above is the front cover of the mark scheme template. Please ensure the front cover of the Markscheme is populated with the same details as the question paper 1 Please amend as appropriate to match front cover of question paper (date, subject, unit number, component number and total number of marks). eg, QUALIFICATION TITLE SPECIFICATION TITLE will become GCSE ENGLISH LANGUAGE. The qualification titles for GCSE and A Level can be abbreviated: either GCSE, GCE, A2 GCE or AS GCE. NB: Please include the unit and component codes, and the exam series, in the header throughout the mark scheme 2 When there is no tier, the H/F indicators are to be removed. 3 Maximum Mark please populate as per question paper 4 Draft and Version details - Please update the version number each time the mark scheme is revised. NB: Just before submitting to OCR following the standardisation meeting, please change the front cover from DRAFT to POST STANDARDISATION 5. The page number - this contains a field, so the page numbers will update automatically. Mark Scheme Guidance

Marking Instructions There are generic marking instructions on the template which are usually the same for all subjects. However, if there are subject specific marking instructions, these will be left in, inserted in the mark scheme at allocated place number 11 in the template before the mark scheme begins. These need to be published as do annotations (see below). Please note: Everything up to number 10 in the instructions will be removed before publication to OCR websites. Annotations and Abbreviations Below is an example of how the RM Assessor mark symbols should appear. Centred in the Annotation column and left aligned in the Meaning column, and table set to fit width of page, eg Annotation Meaning Unclear Annotation Meaning Correct point Incorrect Point Unclear Award 1 Mark Award 2 Mark Award 3 Mark Traditionally marked units must include information on the approved annotations to be used by examiners. This is vital information for centres who request access to scripts. Headers / Footers Please check the unit number, component number, exam series and page numbers are correct Please note: Column widths can be altered (to fit more on a page and save paper) and they may vary for different questions. 8 Mark Scheme Guidance 2016

Table header rows Please try to ensure that table heading rows are used on every page of the mark scheme. Question Number Column This column is split into three, this is to accommodate questions that split into sections and sub sections. The first column is for the number (ie. 1) the second column is for sections (ie. a) and the third is for section parts (ie 1). The section parts are always written in Roman numerals (i = one, v = five, x = ten etc.). For example the format for question 1 section c part 1 would look like this: 1 (a) (i) Note that the question numbers are in bold, and both the section and the sub section are in parentheses. These column widths are set to accommodate the majority of numerical eventualities and as such should never have to change size. Additionally, when a question contains sections and section parts the question number is to only appear next to part (a) of the question and the section letter is to only appear next to the first of the section parts it is relevant to. For example: 1 (a) (i) (b) (ii) (i) (ii) For some MFL mark schemes, to avoid confusion in the foreign language, the letter i is never used. So if there is no (i) in the mark scheme it is deliberate. Marks Column This column contains the marks and should be centred within the column level with the question number. The number in the column itself should, like all text, be Arial 11pt and centred at the top of the column like so: swer Marks Guida 3 Example of mark allocation: Science uses a tick ( ) in some mark schemes instead of (1) There should be consistency in any one mark scheme and across suites of mark schemes (eg groups of subjects or specifications). Mark Scheme Guidance

Answer Column In the answer column all text should be in the font Arial size 11pt and be in Normal style (exceptions are some Maths and language subjects) For some mark schemes Answer is replaced with Indicative Content. on Answer Marks Gui (i) Answers may include: 3 Chlorophyll Photosynthesis Sunlight Photoautotroph. ONE mark for each correct response There will also be occasions when the mark will appear at the end of the answer. For example: on Answer Marks Gui (i) Grass is green because it contains a pigment (1) called Chlorophyll (1). The chlorophyll is used in a process called photosynthesis (1) where plants 3 Ensure that the parentheses are round (no square brackets) and it is not bold. The main mark will still appear in the Marks column. Splitting answers Answers should not be split were possible. Long answers to be split at an appropriate point please use your professional judgement; try to avoid Widows/Orphans, ie do not leave 1 line on its own at the bottom or top of a page. Guidance Column The text in this column must be aligned with the question number. However, each part and section should be in separate rows. When the table s gridlines are shown, it should look like this. Below is an example of how this usually will look for short answer mark schemes. Marks Guidance 1 Accept answers for d (i) and (ii) in any order. 1 X copying out of text without showing understanding: die Wohnung sondern. 1 X Interessen und Gewohnheiten. The second type of guidance column is spilt into two sub-columns. The first is for Content, and the second is for Levels of Response. This type of table will be used mainly for longer answers. 10 Mark Scheme Guidance 2016

Below is an example of how this may look. Marks Guidance Content Levels of response 10 Candidates should receive credit for a particular issue identified in the resource or a broader generic issue. However, this latter issue must originate from the resource, such as secondary impacts of hazards. Strategies must be appropriate to the particular issue identified for Levels 2 and 3. For each question in Section A: AO1 Knowledge and understanding accounts for 4 marks. AO2 Analysis, interpretation and evaluation accounts for 4 marks. AO3 Investigate, conclude and communicate accounts for 2 marks. Balance between issue and strategies given that ONE issue is required but STRATEGIES are to be included, most responses Level 3 (9 10 marks) Substantial knowledge and authoritative understanding of the appropriate issue. Clear Notice that in the level of response column the assessment objectives (AO#) and response levels (Level #) are in bold. Levels of response Should be normal style and bold eg Level 3 (9 10 marks) Substantial knowledge and authoritative Note: there is no colon, also brackets and en-dash used with no spaces Example of Tick Boxes (mainly used in Science) Use the following tables as example of tick boxes used in mark schemes (left aligned). Mark Scheme Guidance

Question/Paper Totals When a total mark appears, it should be in a row below the question it relates to, or at the end of a paper if it is a paper total. In it, the word total appears in the answer column, is Arial 11pt bold and right justified. The mark that appears in the marks column is centre justified and Arial 11 bold. Like this. on Answer Marks Gui (i) Answers may include: 3 Chlorophyll Photosynthesis Sunlight Photoautotroph. ONE mark for each correct response. (ii) Candidates should receive credit for a particular issue identified in the resource or a broader generic issue. However, this latter issue must originate from the resource, such as secondary impacts of hazards. 6 Total 9 Further points on OCR housestyle Paragraph spacing should be set to 0pt above and below. One space only after full stops. Line spaces Following each answer there must be a return (line space/carriage return) between the end of the text and the table bottom. Bullet Points Bullet points should not be indented, leading paragraph to have a colon, have a 1 cm tab following them, and a full stop at the end of the list. Also NO line spaces between bullets, like so: Two marks for accurate description of any example and two more marks for picking an example that establishes naturalism/realism: the acting what is missing from the soundtrack the way the camera is used the lighting. 12 Mark Scheme Guidance 2016

On the occurrence of second level bullet points a dash ( ) should be used, indented to 1 cm with a 2 cm tab after it. For example: Two marks for accurate description of any example and two more marks for picking an example that establishes naturalism/realism; the acting natural/improvised scripted/rehearsed what is missing from the soundtrack diegetic sound non-diegetic sound Numbered lists - as per bulleted lists Numbers and measurements - use half a space in between, eg 1 cm, Full stops: only One space after full stops. En-dash The en-dash is longer than a hyphen and is commonly used to indicate a closed range of values Date (meaning 1990 to 1994) Time 13:00 14:30 Numbers Levels 1 4 (meaning 1 to 4) Ranges January March Hyphenation Hyphens are used to connect parts of a compound word to clarify sense. Also used where an absence of one could cause ambiguity. It can also be used where a word (usually in column text) runs over onto a new line. Where this occurs, the hyphen must come in between completed syllables in word eg Low-cost Short-term Mother-in-law Pink dog-blanket ( pink dog blanket could be a blanket for pink dogs) Em-Dash The em-dash may be used to replace commas, semicolons, colons, and parentheses to indicate added emphasis, and interruption, or an abrupt change of thought. Dashes should generally not be used as punctuation marks within running text; it is preferable to use parentheses Mark Scheme Guidance
