Indicators on Employment, Employment Change (Firm and Individual), and Earnings Detailed Firm Characteristics (geography, industry, age, size) Detailed Worker Demographics (sex, age, education, race, ethnicity) 3 Quarter lag, coverage varies by state Used by economic developers, urban planners, policy analysts, workforce researchers, and academics
3 LEHD s QWI Dissemination Strategy Provide a wide variety of access points to the data to accommodate as many user needs as possible Advanced data users: Bulk download of raw QWIPU from Advanced data users: Access single raw QWIPU files from Intermediate data users: Extract the exact indicators and characteristics needed using the LED Extraction Tool Web tool users: Create your own table, chart, and map using the flexible user-interface of QWI Explorer
4 The LED Extraction Tool New access point for raw data products created through the Local Employment Dynamics Partnership Beta release makes Quarterly Workforce Indicators (QWI) available Streamlined interface allows users to select the exact columns and rows desired Raw data outputs (no maps, charts, or formatted tables)
5 Feedback from users! Why Build This Tool? Make entire set of QWIs available (32 indicators for 50 partner states) Remove barriers to entry (due to the data s size and complexity) Enable wide variety of queries single cell, clusters of industries/geographies, or full longitudinal history Broaden the user base for QWIs
6 Application Design Goals Simple, clean interface Let the characteristics of the data drive users progression through the interface Provide clear path through the application for users, but enable detours and roaming Make contextual help and documentation readily available
7 Query Constraints Due to the structure of the state-based QWI data, the following constraints exist in the LED Extraction Tool: Only one State and one Geography Type can be selected at a time. Industries can be selected from only one Industry Detail Level (NAICS Sector, NAICS Subsector, or NAICS Industry Group) at a time. Worker characteristics are available for Sex by Age, Sex by Education, or Race by Ethnicity in any one query.
8 Summary and Export Tab File size and number of rows estimates are available before the request is submitted. Sequential job queue can handle 16 queries at a time. Follow the progress of a submitted query through the Request Progress status bar. All completed data queries from a user s session are stored in the Query Results list. Metadata and labels for categorical variables are available in the Metadata (ZIP) and CSV & Metadata (ZIP) links.
9 QWIPU Data Schema Changes Geography and Industry codes now conform to Census standards (for simple data joining) Race and Ethnicity codes now conform to Census (and OnTheMap) standards Labels have been dropped to save space Consistent file layout across all data tables
10 Additional Functionality Option to add categorical variable labels to output CSV Dynamic text in "States" help icon that informs users when a state is unavailable due to data loading Estimated wait time data query processing Save/Load settings functionality Status flag descriptions in metadata

17 Application Constraints The following constraints exist in the QWI Explorer: Only one State and one Indicator can be selected at a time. Up to 25 Group elements can be displayed in the Bar Chart at a time. Up to 10,000 table cells in the QWI database can be accessed at a time. Larger queries are required to use the LED Extraction Tool. Settings Conflict Popups appear when incompatible settings need to be resolved.
