Introduction This guide introduces the key features available on the Wolverhampton in Profile (WiP) website. It contains a step-by-step guide on how to use the maps, charts and tables on the system, and how to use the profiles effectively. This is an interactive guide to the system. If you hold the Control key on the keyboard, and then click on any text underlined in blue (such as this), the document will direct you to the relevant section of the WiP website. The WiP website is aimed at a range of audiences, including members of the public, Councillors, businesses seeking information about growth or expansion opportunities, the voluntary and community sector, students and anyone interested in the city. The system was developed by the City Council and its partners (website are links are at the bottom of the homepage), and it hosts a range of information about the city and the Black Country, structured around different themes. Within the Links to other websites section, there are also links to specific websites which hold further data or information such as NOMIS, or to partner organisations such as West Midlands Police. If you have any queries relating to the information contained within this user guide, or need any additional information, please do not hesitate to contact the Corporate Strategy and Improvement Unit in the Office of the Chief Executive on Sources & Acknowledgements of Copyright If you export the maps from the Wolverhampton in Profile website, please acknowledge the website as the source if the maps are included in reports or briefings. Please include the name of the relevant dataset. If you use or reproduce the maps in formal reports or briefings, please seek guidance on their use and copyright labelling. Copyright labels are automatically included on the maps on Wolverhampton in Profile. If those labels are removed, a written copyright label should be included: the paragraph below can be used. Maps are reproduced from Ordnance Survey material with the permission of Ordnance Survey on behalf of Her Majesty s Stationery Office (HMSO) Crown copyright. 5 Altering text size, and using the login box Underneath the pictures, there are two options. To increase the text size, move the mouse cursor over the A in a grey box with the size you require, and click on it. Clicking on the 2 nd and 3 rd A icons will increase the text size proportionately, and the 1 st A icon returns to the text back to normal size if it was increased previously. Fig. 1 Log In option and Text size Alternately, some web browsers will allow users to zoom in or out on websites. For instance, on the bottom-right hand side of the browser window in Internet Explorer there is a magnifying glass icon. If you click on the down arrow next to the magnifying glass, you can select to zoom in or out, or set custom preferences. Fig. 2 Adjusting the zoom Most data on the system is open to the public. However, there are some data sets which are restricted to certain users only, due to sensitivity of the data. If you need access to the restricted data, you can register and sign in using the Log In option. If someone registers, their registration will need to be authenticated and verified with data managers before access is granted. 5

Fig. 3 Restricted access Frontpage navigation and layout On the homepage ( the top paragraph beginning Welcome to Wolverhampton in Profile gives an overview of the system and the population, and a link to an overarching profile of the city. The map in the middle of the page is interactive. If you click on an electoral ward (such as Heath Town) on the map, you are taken to a profile for that ward. There are 20 ward profiles in total. If you click on any of the 9 theme boxes (such as Community Safety) around the map, you are taken to that particular theme s profile for the city. There are 9 theme profiles in total. 6

Fig. 4 The homepage Frontpage map To access the ward profiles from the map in the centre of the homepage, click on a ward. For instance, if you click on the Park area of the map, you are presented with a profile. These profiles present a range of information for each ward, including population, crime, health statistics, housing quality, and environmental issues. The profiles are interactive, and contain links to information of interest elsewhere on the website. Fig. 5 Example ward profile The profile begins with an overall summary about the ward, with separate sections for a number of themes. 7

The profile ends with a More Information section, which contains links to other sources of information. You can export the profiles as a PDF download and save it to your computer, by clicking on the option on the right-hand side of the screen Once you have selected the ward, you can change it by clicking on the Available Areas drop-down menu to select another ward. Frontpage profiles You can click on any of the 9 boxes around the edge of the Wolverhampton map. Each theme on the system has its own profile. For instance, clicking on the Community Safety button brings up a page to choose the Community Safety profile, as well as separate tabs to see the maps, charts and tables for Community Safety data, and associated documents. Fig. 6 Community Safety button Fig. 7 Selection options for Community Safety Clicking on the Community Safety profile link brings up a selection box. Click on the Area drop-down box to choose between a Wolverhampton-wide Community Safety profile, or a ward-based Community Safety profile. 8

Fig. 8 Using the drop-down menu to select areas Once you have selected your main area, you will be prompted to select from the available areas. For example, if you want ward data, you will be asked to select a specific ward. Fig. 9 Selecting a specific ward 9

Fig. 10 Example ward-based Community Safety profile Maps, charts and tables Maps, charts and tables introduction The Maps, charts and tables section brings together a number of dynamic maps and data tables. The system has 9 main themes, each of which has a drop-down menu, operated by clicking on the + icon beside it. Fig. 11 Theme structure of the maps, charts and tables section 10

By clicking on the + icon beside each theme name, you can see the maps and information contained within each section. Fig. 12 Expanding the Theme name Hover over the topic (example below, Crime Rates per 1000 population) for a brief explanation about the dataset. Fig. 13 Explanation of the Crime Rates per 1000 population dataset in yellow box The Area tab displays the data organised by different geographical areas, rather than by theme. 11

Fig. 14 Area structure of the maps, charts and tables section The As List option shows all available maps in alphabetical order. Fig. 15 List structure of the maps, charts and tables section The number of items per page can be changed using a drop-down menu. 12

Fig. 16 Expanding the number of items per page Once you click on the dataset you wish to view, you will see an overview screen showing the title, a brief explanation of the dataset, the geographical areas at which the data is available, and download options. Fig. 17 Overview screen for Crime Rates per 1000 population dataset The download section means you can download the data yourself. Click on the CSV link to have the data as a download onto your computer. 13

Fig. 18 Downloading the CSV file If you have a program which can read.xml files such as Feedreader, you can import a link by clicking on the XML icon: the system supports RSS feeds. By clicking on the XML feed icon for each dataset of interest, you will receive automatic updates on the datasets of your choice. Alternately, many web browsers can read RSS files, including Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Chrome. For more information, go to Maps, charts and tables: tables From the Overview screen, you can see a table of the datasets by clicking the link. By default, the table will list the latest data for each individual dataset. For instance, with the Crime Rates per 1000 population tables, there are 7 datasets under the heading, each of which has three years data on the system. However, the system only shows the latest year. 14

Fig. 19 Default table view for the Crime rates per 1000 population dataset To show more than just the latest data for each dataset, you need to select the years you wish to see in the table. For instance, if you wish to see the total recorded crime per 1000 population for each year available, expand the relevant heading, and then tick the boxes containing the extra years data and then press the button. Fig. 20 Selecting different years in the Crime rates per 1000 population dataset To deselect years or indicators which are selected by default, untick the box, and then click the button. The table below shows only the Total recorded crime per 1000 population has been selected for viewing; all of the other data has been deselected (unticked). 15

Fig. 21 How to select and deselect data for the tables After selecting just the total recorded crime for the 08/09, 09/10 and 10/11 financial years and pressing the system will briefly refresh and then show the revised table containing only the data you selected. Fig. 22 Revised table showing only Total recorded crime per 1000 population data You can export the table, as either a CSV or XML file, or you can it by clicking on the relevant links directly above the table. Fig. 23 Export options for table information To view the metadata (information about each dataset, such as the source, time period covered, who owns the data), click on the directly next to the name of the dataset. icon 16

Fig. 24 How to examine the metadata from the table headings The metadata will open in a new browser window. It contains the title, a description of the data, subject, keywords, coverage, sources, and data owner information. Fig. 25 Example metadata for total recorded crime per 1000 population At the top of the page, next to the title, there are links to move between the tables and any maps which have been created from the same data. Fig. 26 Link from tables to the maps 17

Maps, charts and tables: single map Standard layout - single map Clicking on the icon brings up a single map. The default layout for the Crime Rate per 1000 population single map is shown below. To alter any part of the default layout, move the mouse cursor to the top right-hand side of the box you wish to alter. Three icons will then appear. To drag the box around the screen, click and hold ; to maximise the box currently highlighted, click ; and to close the current box completely, click. If you have altered the layout, and wish to restore the default layout, press the F5 key on the keyboard. Fig. 27 Default layout for single map You can select different datasets in the Choose data and time area: new datasets are shown in a cream colour, and time periods are arranged so that the latest data is first each time. Use the scroll bar to move down the list and to see more datasets. 18

Fig. 28 Choose data and time Each time period on the list has a beside it. If you click on the icon you are taken directly to the metadata section for that particular dataset. The metadata covers information about each dataset, such as the source, time period covered, who owns the data etc. The metadata is opened in a new window. Each different dataset has different information in the What the data tells you box. This box is designed to give a brief overview of the data, including sources, a brief description of visible trends, and any limitations of the data. Fig. 29 What the data tells you box You can use the command (in the top-right corner of the default layout) to expand the default layout. To zoom in or out on the map, use the scroll bar on the main map. The map is automatically set to be zoomed out as far as possible when loaded up, but it can be zoomed in and out by the and buttons. 19

Fig. 30 Zooming in and out controls for the single map Maximising parts of the layout - single map To maximise any item on the screen (such as the map, time series or the comparison areas), go to the top-right corner of the box and click the diagonal arrow. In the example below, the main map is maximised and expanded. Fig. 31 Maximising the main map diagonal arrow Maximising the item will make it fill the screen. It can be zoomed in and out even when maximised. 20

Fig. 32 The main map shown when maximised To return back to the normal layout, go to the top-right corner again and the Restore Down option will appear. Fig. 33 The Restore Down option Selecting areas - single map Hovering over an area on the map (shown in turquoise) shows the name and the score/number/rank/rate associated with it in the dataset. For instance, Wednesfield South had a rate of total recorded crime of 110 per 1000 population in the 10/11 financial year, so 110 appears next to the ward name. 21

Fig. 34 Hovering over an area on the single map When you click on an area, the colour changes to purple on the map. To deselect a purple-coloured area, click on it again. You can select multiple areas on the map simultaneously. To do this hold the Control key on the keyboard, and click with the mouse on the areas you wish to compare together. 22

Fig. 35 Selecting an area on the map Switching between time series and bar chart - single map Select an area on the map by clicking on it. Once selected, a time series is displayed in the box at the bottom of the page, this shows trends over time in that area since the data series began. Fig. 36 Time series display of selected area data You can also change this box to show a bar chart: double-click on the button. The bar chart will show where the selected area (Wednesfield South ward, in the figure above) ranks against all of the other areas on the map page. 23

Fig. 37 bar chart display of selected area data Opening information about the data - single map If you click on the button, you will open the metadata (information about each dataset, such as the source, time period covered, who owns the data etc) in a new window. Fig. 38 Metadata for the selected area data Exporting parts - single map To export parts of the display, including maps, you can use the button. If you click on the Export option, you can export either the individual components of the displays (such as just the map by itself), or you can choose to export the entire page as a block. 24

Fig. 39 Exporting the entire page as a block You can also export different parts of the display on the Export full screen drop-down menu. For instance, you can select to export just the map by itself. Fig. 40 Exporting just the map by itself To export maps in the best quality possible, maximise the display using the maximise command in the top-right corner. Fig. 41 Maximising the map for exporting 25

Once the map has been maximised, right-click on the white space around the map, and go to Export. Fig. 43 Selecting the Export option for the maximised map Click on the down arrow next to the Export full screen option and select Map. Fig. 44 Exporting just the maximised map 26

Before exporting, you need to decide whether you need a JPEG file or a PNG file. It is recommended to use the PNG file, because the picture quality and text is sharper and clearer in a PNG file than a JPEG file. Fig. 45 Selecting the picture type Once you click Export, you will be prompted to save to a location of your choice. The default save name is Map.png, but you can alter it. 27

Fig. 46 Selecting the download location Using help - single map Click on the button to be directed to the help section of the website. Please look at the Help section for more information. Comparing areas - single map To compare multiple areas on the map hold the control key and select the areas using the mouse. To deselect an area, click once on any purple highlighted area. If you hover over any comparison areas, they will be highlighted in turquoise in the comparison areas box, and in purple on the time series graph. 28

Fig. 47 Hovering over comparison areas Clicking on the comparison area will turn the comparison area in the table to a purple colour, and it will appear on the time series chart in the colour beside its name (green in this case). Fig. 48 Selecting the desired comparison areas with a time series 29

Once you have both your main area and your comparison area together you can use the button to show the bar chart. In this case, the Wednesfield South ward is shown in purple on the bar chart; the green horizontal line is the total recorded crime rate per 1000 population for Wolverhampton as a whole. You can see the wards which are above and below the overall city rate. Fig. 49 Selecting the desired comparison areas with a bar chart Adding different layers - single map On the Key used on the map section, there are several different layers loaded for many of the geographies on the system. For instance, for the wards map, there are libraries, children s centres, leisure centres and schools. To select any of these layers, tick the box next to them, as shown in fig. 50. Fig. 50 Key used on the map Secondary Schools Once a layer is selected on top of the base geography, it is shown on the main map in outline form. This map, complete with layers, can be exported as per the export instructions. 30

Fig. 51 Total recorded crime map overlaid with Secondary Schools Altering legend settings - single map Clicking on the icon next to the name of the base geography brings up a legend settings box. Fig. 52 Legend settings icon The legend settings can change the number of classes. For instance, if the data is shown on the map in 5 distinct groups, then you can change the No. Classes option to make more groups (for instance, 7) or less groups (for instance, 3). 31

Fig. 53 Legends setting box By default, the crime data has 5 Classes to it Fig. 54 Default 5 Classes By altering the No. Classes, we can reduce the number of groups to 3 Fig. 55 Fewer (3) Classes Or expand the number of groups to 7 Fig. 56 Greater (7) Classes 32

The type of classifiers can be altered. This changes how data on the map is organised into different colour-coded groups. This is highlighted in the legend. There are five different ways in which this can be done: Quantile (the default classifier); Equal Interval; Natural Breaks; Continuous and Standard Deviation. Fig. 57 Classifiers drop-down menu For example, selecting Standard Deviation as a classifier means that the value distribution on the map is organised by how far an area's score deviates above or below the mean. The key names will alter to show that the colourcoded sections are no longer divided equally as quantiles, but according to their standard deviation score. Fig. 58 Total recorded crime shown by standard deviations Expanding the size of the table - single map To expand the size of a table, hold the left mouse button on the top of the table section you should see a white arrow pointing both upwards and downwards. Drag the table upwards, and it will expand proportionately. 33

Fig. 59 Dragging the table up Once the table has been dragged, more areas will be visible. This can be maximised and exported. Fig. 60 Resized table Maps, charts and tables: double map The double maps are not included universally on the system. The double maps compare datasets which may be related to each other (such as the total recorded crime rate and burglary of a dwelling rate ), and allow exploration of trends between them. Double maps can also be used to monitor trends over time, such as Job Seekers Alowance (JSA) claims in January 2008 and January

The system has a selection of double maps loaded in, but more double maps can be produced upon request. If you would like to discuss this further, please contact population.statistics@wolverhampton.gov.uk, or phone To alter any part of the default layout, move the mouse cursor to the top right-hand side of the box you wish to alter. Three icons will then appear. To drag the box around the screen, click and hold ; to maximise the box currently highlighted, click ; and to close the current box completely, click. If you have altered the layout, and wish to restore the default layout, press the F5 key on the keyboard. The standard and and the buttons work as normal. However, the button only reveals the metadata about map 1 and not map 2 on the double maps page. Standard layout - double map Clicking on the icon brings up a double map. The default layout for the double map is shown below. Please note, the system has the same data loaded for the 1 st and 2 nd maps. You need to choose different datasets or time periods in map 1 and map 2 to make comparisons. 35

Fig. 61 Default layout for double map Comparing time periods - double map Double maps can compare different years of the same indicator for trend analysis. In Fig. 62, the total recorded crime in 10/11 is shown in map 1, and the total recorded crime in 09/10 is shown in map 2. In the correlation chart underneath the maps, data for map 1 is always shown on the X axis (bottom) and data for map 2 is always shown on the Y axis (left). Fig. 62 Time period comparison for double map Comparing indicators - double map The double map can compare different indicators from the same year to see what sort of relationship exists between them. In Fig. 63, the 36

total recorded crime in 10/11 is shown in map 1, and the burglary dwellings in 10/11 are shown in map 2. In the correlation chart in the bottom-right hand side, data for map 1 is always shown on the X axis (bottom) and data for map 2 is always shown on the Y axis (left). Fig. 63 Indicator comparison for double map Switching between scatterplot and table - double map Each combination of the two indicators is represented by a spot. Positioning the cursor over the spot will reveal the name of the area represented and its values for the indicators shown in both Map 1 and Map 2. This form of chart is known as a scatterplot. Fig. 64 Scatterplot of total recorded crime (X) and burglary dwelling (Y) (10/11) The relationship between the two selected indicators over the whole area covered by the map can be represented by several statistics. However, two highly correlated indicators does not necessarily mean that change in one of the indicators has caused change in the other. This is best summarised by the maxim "Correlation does not imply causation". 37

There are 3 important measures shown at the top of the scatterplot. The Correlation Coefficient (r) measures of how two sets of data change together. The Correlation Coefficient ranges from 0 to 1, with 0 being no change and 1 being identical change. It is shown as in the example in fig. 64. The R-squared (r2) statistic describes the extent of the fit of both of the indicators to the line. The R-squared ranges from 0 to 1, with 0 being a random distribution and 1 being a perfect fit. It is shown as in the example in fig. 64. The r2 is the measure usually used to assess correlation: the closer to 1, the better the correlation. The Regression Equation is the line which shows the expected trend between both of the indicators shown on the scatterplot. It is shown as in the example in fig. 64. The scatterplot is the default graph on the double maps page. Doubleclick on the table in more detail. button to see the Fig. 65 Table of map 1 and map 2 (10/11 year) Exporting parts - double map The double maps can be exported. For more information how to export maps on the system, please see the Exporting parts - single map of this user guide. You can export the page as a block, by clicking on the Export option and Export full screen (see Fig. 66). 38

Fig. 66 Exporting double maps Profiles The Profiles which can be accessed by the left hand sidebar menu, work in the same way as the frontpage Profiles, except that there are specialist profiles under some Themes which are not included on the frontpage. All of the standard Theme profiles can be accessed using the Profiles menu. However, there are also some other profiles in the system. For instance, under Population and People, there are specially-made profiles ( Local Neighbourhood Partnerships in this case). 39

Fig. 67 Profiles menu Clicking on Local Neighbourhood Partnership link brings up a dropdown menu asking which LNP you wish to see in the profile. Fig. 68 Local Neighbourhood Partnership Profile Once you select the LNP of interest (Whitmore Reans in this case), a profile is produced. 40

Fig. 69 Whitmore Reans LNP Profile You can export the profiles as a PDF download and save it to your computer, by clicking on the option on the right-hand side of the screen Once you have selected the available area, you can change it by clicking on the Available Areas drop-down menu to select another ward. Document library The document library contains strategies, reports, and research briefings. These documents give context to data on the system. You can view the documents by Theme or as a List. The Theme structure contains relevant information for each theme. For instance, the Housing section contains the Housing Strategy

Fig. 70 Document library thematic structure The As List tab is a simple list of all documents held on the system displayed in alphabetical order. Fig. 71 Document library As List structure Search You can search the system using different keywords. For instance, putting in the word crime brings up a dataview which has crime listed as one of its keywords. To go directly to the dataview, click on the Crime Rates per 1000 population option. 42

Fig. 72 Crime search function dataviews demonstration As well as dataviews, you can switch tabs to look at all indicators which have crime as one of their keywords. Fig. 73 Crime search function indicators demonstration By default, the system lists 5 items per page. You can change this to view more or all search results on one page. Fig. 74 Expanding the number of items per page 43

Once you have the full indicator list, you can click on the name of each indicator to show its metadata, which gives information about the nature of the dataset. Fig. 75 Search metadata selection The metadata will open in a separate tab. Fig. 76 Search metadata opening When selecting the Go To This Data option next to the indicator you want (Fig. 74), it displays your Search Results, showing all of the maps available on the first tab marked Data Views (Fig. 75). 44
