3 What is Pinterest Welcome to the wonderful world of Pinterest, a new, extremely fast growing social media site that has the Internet buzzing. In this document we will show quick steps for setting up an account, discuss important Pinterest language and features and give you insight into how to integrate Pinterest with your greater marketing. As we can see, Pinterest is a similar to bookmarking sites such as Digg, Reddit and Delicious, however, it has a fresh new look and language. 4 How to Set up a Pinterest Account First thing is first, we need to set up a Pinterest account. Follow these simple steps. Step 1: Request an Invite As of now, Pinterest is not open to the public. Because of this you need to request an invite from someone who has an account or from Pinterest. If you are an SEO Inc. client please reach out to us for an invite. 5 Step 2: Sign up with Facebook or Twitter At this point Pinterest requires you to login with either a Facebook or Twitter account. Why? They feel it makes it easier for you to find people that you know. And when you think about it, they are right! Figure 3: Pinterest Sign up Once you receive an invite you must either sign in with Twitter or Facebook. Step 3: Create a Pinterest Account Once you have the invite create your account. 6 Step 4: Select a Few Topics Now you have the option to select the topics of your interest. If this is for a business account, choose topics that relate to your brand and demographic. If you are a car company you may choose to follow this topic. Don t worry, you can always change this later just select a few to get started. Figure 5: Select Topics Next choose Follow People. 7 Sep 5: Confirm People and Create Boards You are now following people based on the interests you selected in the previous area. If you decide you do not want to follow one of these people simply click unfollow. When you are done with this process select Create Boards. Create boards when you are ready to move on. Choose unfollow if you do not want to subscribe to this person. Note: We recommend following all suggestions when you begin. This will give you content to view and play with. 8 Sep 6: Create your First Pinboards Pinboards are what Pinterest is all about. They are categories of content that you aggregate on the site. You now have the option to create your first Pinboards. When creating these boards do not simply go with the suggestions. Instead, enter categories that you like or that relate to your business. 9 Step 6: Install the Pin It Plugin Once installed in your browser, the Pin It button lets you grab an image from any website and add it to one of your pinboards. When you pin from a website, Pinterest automatically grabs the source link so they can credit the original creator. To install the Pin It button in visit this URL: To install the Pin It button in Internet Explorer: 1. Display your Favorites Bar by clicking Tools > Toolbars > Favorites Bar 2. Right-click the Pin It button and select Add to Favorites 3. On the pop-up window, select Create in: Favorites Bar 4. When you are browsing the web, push the Pin It button to pin an image To install the Pin It button in Firefox: 1. Display your Bookmarks Bar by clicking View > Toolbars > Bookmarks Toolbar 2. 11 Pin It Button The Pin It Button allows a user to share content to Pinterest. The Pin It button is made to look like and function similarly to both Facebook's and Twitter's buttons. Placing them together will increase the social awareness of your products. While a description is optional, it is recommended; specifying it lowers the friction for your users to pin your products. You can have multiple Pin It buttons on each page using the Advanced code below. For example, on a catalog. Just make sure that each one is next to and associated with the correct product, visually. 12 Using Pinterest In this section we will show how Pinterest is used. Functionality Pinterest allows you to Repin, Like and Comment on any piece of content on the website. 13 Repin When you Repin a piece of content you are simply choosing to save the content to one of your Pin Boards. Each time you Repin a content your followers will see it. Select the Pin Board you would like to Pin the content to and enter a description. Figure 11: RePin You can also share your Pin on Twitter and Facebook. Likes Similar to a Pin, when you Like a piece of content that content is saved in your Like section. Comments Comments simply show up under the post you have commented on.
