V3 State Motor Vehicle Crash Dashboard Introduction Global Inclusion Criteria and Filters Elements of the Dashboard Data Set Size Demographics Age and Gender Visualization Race Visualization Time Dispatch Time Dispatch Month and Year Incident Details Service Times Probability of Survival Injury Risk Factor Type of Drug/Alcohol Indication Geography Transports Crossing State Lines NHTSA Regions Rate of Motor Vehicle Crashes to All NEMSIS Activations Tableau Toolbar Undo, Redo, Revert, Refresh and Pause Subscribe, Custom Views, Edit, Share, and Download Contact Info Introduction The goal of the V3 Motor Vehicle Crash Dashboard is to provide the state data managers with a overview dashboard using nationally submitted data that allows them to characterize motor vehicle crashes in their state. This is done by examining several types of information: Demographics Time Incident Details, and Geography Global Inclusion Criteria and Filters The global inclusion criteria defines the minimum characteristics each event record must meet in order for it to be included in any of the calculations for the V3 Motor Vehicle Crash Dashboard. For details on each element, its code, and range of values see the NEMSIS Version 3.4 Data Dictionary. For this dashboard, our inclusion criteria were as follows: Type of Service Requested was 911-response (eresponse.05) Incident/Patient Disposition indicated a patient contact was made (edisposition.12) Cause of Injury was reported as motor vehicle related based on ICD-10 code (einjury.01) Submitting State limited to the state the user has access to. The dashboard also includes a number of filters. These filters are defined as follows: Type : Based on einjury.01, types are determined by submitted ICD-10 codes. This drop down menu allows the choice between Bicycle, Bus, Car, Heavy Transport Vehicle, Motorcycle, Other Motor Vehicle, Pedestrian, and Truck/Van. Please see ICD-10 Data for more information on these descriptions. The table used to map ICD-10 codes to Types is located here: ICD10 to Type.csv
Unit Dispatch Date : From etimes.03, dates are represented on a slider. Elements of the Dashboard This dashboard is divided into five sections, Data Set Size, Demographics, Time, Incident Details, and Geography, each outlined below. Data Set Size The data set size section is designed to be a road map to help navigate this subset of EMS activations. As the user makes selections and filters on the data, the data set size bars will adjust to show how much of the data set is represented in a selection. As an example, if a user were to select a type of just "Motorcycle" the data set size visualizations would display the following: The colored bars and label show that 1,527 activations, 233 EMS agencies, and 13 states and territories are represented in the selections. The black lines on the right size indicate the size of the full motor vehicle activations data set which, as of this writing, contains 42,802 activations, 541 EMS agencies, and 14 states and territories. For a state user, when the dashboard is opened, it will show that states data in relationship to the motor vehicle activations for the entire nation. Therefore, a state user will never see more than one state or territory listed in data set size. Demographics The Demographics section of this dashboard contains two visualizations, which display three metrics: age, gender, and race.
Age and Gender Visualization The age and gender visualization displays the percentages of total motor vehicle activations that fall into the indicated age (epatient.15 and epatient.16) and gender groups (epatient.13). To see a count of activations, simply mouse over a cell in the table, and a tooltip will appear with more information on that grouping. For this table, color is indicative of a greater number of patients in the given group. For example, the largest group above, that comprises 8.97% of all motor vehicle related activations, is males between 20 and 24 years old, and it is the darkest green. To use this visualization as a filter, simply click on the cell, row or column you would like to filter on. To exit the filter, click on that cell, row or column again. Race Visualization The race bar chart displays the percentage of total activations where a given race was indicated (epatient.14). Because the NEMSIS V3 Standard allows more than one race to be selected for a single patient, this visualization works slightly differently than others, and cannot be used as a filter for the rest of the dashboard. A count of total activations with the indicated race is listed to the right of the bars. Time The Time section of this dashboard contains two visualizations, which display time across four dimensions: time of day, day of week, month, and year.
Dispatch Time The dispatch time heat map shows the percentage of motor vehicle related activations stratified by day of week as well as time of day. A count of activations, as well as the total is available in the tooltip. This time measure is based on Unit Notified by Dispatch Date (etimes.03). To use this visualization as a filter, click on the day of week, time block, or an individual cell. To exit the filter, simply click on the day, time, or cell again. Dispatch Month and Year The dispatch month and year bar chart is also based on Unit Notified by Dispatch Date (etimes.03). Each bar represents a month, while each color represents a year. Darker colors represent years further in the past, while the lighter colors are closer to present-day. To use this visualization as a filter, simply click on the month at the top, or an individual bar. To exit the filter, click that month or bar again. Remember that dates can also be filtered on using the slider at the top of the dashboard. Incident Details The incident details section consists of four visualizations designed to provide more detail about the incident EMS is responding to. This is achieved by examining, service times, probability of survival, specific injury risk factors and indication of drug or alcohol involvement.
Service Times The service times visualization looks at three time intervals of a normal EMS activation, Scene Response Time, Scene Time, and Transport Time. Times with a value 0 or less, as well as null values, are excluded from this visualization, times 60 minutes or greater are binned. The service times are defined as follows: Scene Response Time is defined as the duration between Unit En Route Date Time (etimes.05) and Unit Arrived on Scene Date Time (etimes.06). Scene Time is defined as the duration between Unit Arrived on Scene Date Time (etimes.06) and Unit Left Scene Date Time (etimes.09). Transport Time is defined as the duration between Unit Left Scene Date Time (etimes.09) and Unit Arrived at Destination Date Time (etimes.10). To change the visualization between the three service times, use the drop down menu (shown below). The bar chart will update accordingly. To use this visualization as a filter, click on the bar or the number of minutes, to exit the filter click on the bar or number again. Probability of Survival This visualization displays information on injury severity using a complex measure called the revised trauma score (or RTS) to calculate an approximate probability of survival. Patients who present with a probability of survival of 36.1% or less are considered severely injured and should be transported to a level 1 trauma center. RTS is calculated as described in the box below, and its value translate to a probability of survival as described in the companion bar chart.
The probability of survival visualization uses counts to display the number of patients in each category, as there is a large bias toward less injured patients in the NEMSIS activations. To use this visualization as a filter, click on any of the cells or percentages, to exit the filter click on the cell or percentage again. Injury Risk Factor
The injury risk factor bar chart shows a count of activations where certain motor vehicle-related values from einjury.04 were indicated. These factors are based on the CDC 2011 Guidelines for the Field Triage of Injured Patients. The titles are lengthy, because of their descriptive nature. To read the full title, mouse over the visualization to bring up the tooltip. To use this visualization as a filter, click on any of the bars or titles, to exit the filter click on the bar or title again. Type of Drug/Alcohol Indication The type of drug/alcohol indication visualization (ehistory.17) is comprised of two parts. First, a percentage of total that shows the percentage of records in the dataset with any drug or alcohol indication, and second a bar chart that provides a detail breakdown. For the bar chart, the percentages are calculcated as the percentage of the activations in the dataset where that specific indication was reported. To use this visualization as a filter, click on any of the bars or titles, to exit the filter click on the bar or title again. Geography The geography sections consists of three visualizations designed to provide more detail about the specific geographic information relating to motor vehicle-related EMS activations. These visualizations provide information on transports crossing state lines, percentage of incidents within each NHTSA region, as well as a rate of motor vehicle-related activations to all 911-response activations that NEMSIS collects stratified by counties within the user's state. Transports Crossing State Lines The transports crossing state lines visualization gives a simple yes or no to whether an EMS transport crossed state lines with a patient. This is calculated as a check whether incident state (escene.18) matches destination state (edisposition.05). To use this visualization as a filter, click on the cell or the words "Yes" or "No", to exit the filter, click on the cell or titles again. NHTSA Regions The NHTSA regions visualization shows a percentage of activations in each NHTSA region based on incident state (escene.18). To see which states are included in each region as a well as a count of activations, mouse over the visualization to bring up the tooltip. To use this visualization as a filter, click on any of the bars or regions, to exit the filter click on the bar or region again. Rate of Motor Vehicle Crashes to All NEMSIS Activations This visualization is intended to act as an indicator to help state data managers determine counties that may be experiencing a high rate of motor vehicle accidents. The rate is calculated as the number of motor vehicle related activations per 10,000 activations reported to NEMSIS with 911-response and a patient contact. Users will only see this visualization for activations where their state submitted the data. This may include counties outside the state, if an incident occurred outside the state, but was documented and submitted to the NEMSIS TAC by the state.
Counties are colored based on the rate, with anything greater that 1.5 standard deviations from the nationwide mean as orange, and anything greater than 3 standard deviations from the nationwide mean as red. More information on each county can be found by bringing up the tooltip. To use this visualization as a filter, click on a county, the exit the filter click on the county again. Tableau Toolbar All Tableau dashboards share the same toolbar at the bottom of the view. Note that while most dashboards will have the same selections, some items may differ based on user permissions. Undo, Redo, Revert, Refresh and Pause These selections are found on the left side of the Tableau toolbar and can be used to help navigate the dashboard. Undo will remove the last selection made, if you have used undo to remove a selection, you can then use redo to return to that selection. Rev ert returns the dashboard to its original view. Refresh will reload the data on the dashboard subject to any selections made. Pause will stop the dashboard from refreshing as you make selections. As an example, if you want to make a set of complete selections in a dashboard s filters, you could use these buttons to speed up the process. Normally every time a change is made, the dashboard will refresh. If you select Pause however, the dashboard will remain the same no matter how many selections you make. Once you have made all your selections, you can select Refresh to reload the dashboard based on those selections. Subscribe, Custom Views, Edit, Share, and Download These selections are found on the right side of the Tableau toolbar and can be used to interact with the dashboard in external ways. The Subscribe button allows users to subscribe to a daily or weekly that will show a static image of the dashboard as well as a link to the view. You can select either a particular view (tab) or all the views (tabs) available in the dashboard. Under Subscriptions you can choose the frequency of s and in Subject Line you can assign the subject for the s. As a default, the subscription will be assigned to the address associated with your NEMSIS account.
Custom Views allows users to save any particular set of filters or selections for quick access later. A user can create their view and then name it and save it either for their own personal use or use by anyone with access to this dashboard. Previously saved views will appear in the custom views tab. Edit will open the dashboard in the web editor for Tableau. Note that this option is not available on all dashboards and will require some knowledge of how to use Tableau to build and edit dashboards. Share will provide a couple of options for sharing the dashboard with others; specifically an embed code and a regular HTML link. While you can use the link to share the dashboard with others, please keep in mind that many of the NEMSIS dashboards will require a username and password so only those with credentials will be able to access them. The last option is Download. Clicking on the download button opens up several options to download either the workbook, the data within it, or a static image of the view. Selecting any one of these file types will produce a download of the requested file. Remember that not all options will be available for all dashboards and views.
