4 UC Assumptions for WorldCat Local Intended as a replacement for Melvyl, not for local OPAC Not intended as a librarian tool FirstSearch WorldCat fills that role for the moment UC-wide uniformity vs. customized for each campus UC has a limited ability to make direct changes New features: goal is to test and enable new features as a community; maintain stability and predictable performance (don t keep tinkering)

5 UC Roadmap Process Review OCLC announcements and quarterly install notices Assess new features Add workable features to roadmap Develop plan Consult Test with support from campuses Determine whether and when to implement

6 UC s Current Initiatives Serial LHRs now implemented for 8 campuses to improve Request response for large serial holdings Mobile interface customizations: contact melvylops@cdlib.org Each campus when ready can now submit local data through OCLC batch load process

9 WorldCat Local Central Index Provides centralized access to databases through the WorldCat Local Searches will immediately retrieve records indexed within the WorldCat Local service CDL has a testing proposal ready to present to Melvyl Advisory Group

10 WorldCat Local View Now (for free resources) Allows WorldCat Local users to link to free electronic resources with a single click A "View Now" link in brief results connects users directly to free resources: full-text articles and open-access objects Examples: government documents, ERIC, escholarship repository CDL has a proposal ready to review with Melvyl Advisory Group

13 On the Roadmap for Investigation WorldCat Local Knowledge Base: Investigation is on the roadmap for January- February-March View Now for all Resources: More investigation is needed before determining the time frame

14 WorldCat Knowledge Base Allows management of the workflows associated with electronic materials Combines data about library's electronic content and linking features that enable access to the content OCLC has announced they will use it with a growing number of services over time

15 WorldCat Knowledge Base Why this takes longer to implement: UC already has Knowledge Base in SFX (UC-eLinks) Challenge for UC to keep all knowledge bases synched up; there is also a Knowledge Base associated with CDL s Electronic Resource Management System (ERMS) Looking for tools to ensure consistency and simplicity

16 WorldCat Local View Now (for all resources) Allows WorldCat Local users to link to electronic resources with a single click. A "View Now" link in brief results connects users directly to full-text articles and open-access objects. Provides access to items available through database subscriptions and in popular digital collections. Under investigation. Depends on turning on the WorldCat Knowledge Base and its related challenges.

40 Short Term The power of the search box Query Parsing Developments (installed in Aug.) The words 'and', 'or' and 'not' are no longer treated as search terms. Added support for = index label identifiers. new feature has a specific meaning. For example, the query: ti="gone with the wind" Searches for the anchored phrase gone with the wind in the ti index. Common Word Exclusions (starting with English, French, German)
