22 Digital Collection Gateway Harvesting Approximately 15 million WorldCat records nearly 14 million added over the last year Goals: Improve visibility of local, diverse, digital collections and content to users Simple, self-service tool focused on empowering the collection staff Synchronize digital item metadata with WorldCat Use standard OAI-PMH protocol Not a Cataloging Interface

23 A few, simple steps 1. Register your digital repository your OAI-PMH repository 2. Create a profile for each collection each OAI set 3. Select harvesting frequency

Profiles default to Archival Material Institutions can set the mapping in the Gateway Updates are only a harvest away How does the Shared Print Pilot factor into WCL? The pilot is gathering context and requirements that OCLC can use in informing product roadmaps and developments.

34 Local Data (development timeline) Nov 2010 Ability to display LHR data for all formats (monographs, serials, e-content, etc) May 2011 Ability to use LSN (Local System Number) instead of OCLC number as the unique identifier between WCL and institution s ILS May 2011 Ability to load and display Local Bib Data. Code installed for searching Local Bib Data June 2011 All Local Bib Data reindexed and searching of this data is available to institutions Aug/Sept 2011 Ability to search LHR (Local Holdings Records) data See example at the bottom with Local Bib Data enabled and then not enabled:

36 Local Holding Records Update Status: Currently in testing, general release announcement planned for end of September/October. Institutionally based (Level 1) Loaded at the institution level Indexed at the institution level Displayed at the institution level Group (Level 2) - Not available, looking at the context of use. Currently 8 of 10 UC libraries have LHRs on for serials in production instances (per 9/12/2011 CDL message).

44 How is local data in WorldCat Local similar to institution records WorldCat Local doesn t use institution records. There can be a data overlap. The fields that are retained in an Local Bib Data (LBD) record will be in an Institution Record. The fields that can be retained in the LBD are limited to a specific set. For LBD creation if an institution wants to retain a field that is not on the list it needs to be mapped to one of the fields on the list. An Institution Record containing some of the fields that are in the LBD is the only relationship.

45 How is local data in WorldCat Local similar to institution records Institution Records don t know of an LBD existence nor does an LBD know of an Institution Records existence. Institution Records do not interact with any of OCLC s products such as LBD s playing into WCL displaying and indexing. Institution Record loading is only allowed for former RLG members.
