Key Takeaways Participants typically use the website to search for research materials, connecting from off campus (VPN), and to use course materials. Participants found the usage of a search bar to be helpful. Participants found the Ask A Librarian function of the website to be useful. Participants found that the Quick Links bar provides easy navigation of the website.
PROTOTYPING Siva Nathan Andrew Marc Nityata
Initial Research Examined ten other university library sites to gather data and ideas. BYU Library (lib.byu.edu) UC Berkeley Library (lib.berkeley.edu) Harvard Library (lib.harvard.edu)
Wireframe v0.1 Based on survey data, interview data, and examining other sites, three preliminary alpha sites were built as a sort of jumping off point. Boxes A more boxy interface with cover flow Tabs Tabs for the libraries, cover flow for news Just Search A simple, clean interface highlighting the library s #1 used feature
A modern interface Current trends in web development lean towards a more streamlined, clean interface. With the launch of Windows 8 as well as Google s Card structure, simple boxes arranged aesthetically are quickly becoming the new, modern look for websites (and other interfaces). Windows Metro Google Keep
Consistency across sites As we enter a more technologically complex world, CONSISTENCY is essential to users! When visiting the UCI Law Library Website, we found it to have a modern design from start to finish similar to our goal. We saw this website as an opportunity for consistency amongst UCI Library websites. UCI Law Library Website
How to combine all three? Boxes v. 0.1 Mockup Consistency Modern User Experience
Original UCI Libraries Wireframe
Overview of Major Changes Boxes was the favorite, but still needed work. Based on our surveys, we decided on key major changes: Replace the acronyms ANTPAC and Melvyl to the easy-to-understand Search in UCI and Search all UC Libraries Rework individual UCI Library pages Rename the popular Quick Links to a more modern How do I or I want to
Overview of Major Changes More key changes: Keep I want to (previously Quick Links) only on the main navigation page, and removed it on subpages Use a breadcrumb style (ie: Home -> Library Services -> Borrowing) to allow easy navigation A Search bar on the main page capable of searching for all resources, from materials to library policy to in-site information Having general library information including current hours and a link to each library s unique information
Future UCI Libraries Wireframe
Sample of sub-level wireframes
Mobile Experience Tablets will show full version of website with user friendly tile-interface if resolution allows For smaller tablets and smartphones, the existing mobile website design will be presented with an updated theme
USABILITY TESTING Anthony Negar Steven Peter Liu Ivan Han Xiang Jordan Moury Sunny Ibtisam Sagar
Usability testing Participants 15 participants Incentives Each participant will be given a $5 Starbucks gift card after completing the usability test.
Usability testing Procedure Participants will evaluate two different sites: the current UCI Libraries website and the prototype. Introductory Questions Tasks to complete on Website A. Ask questions about Website A. Tasks to complete on Website B. Ask questions about Website B. Comparative questions.
