1 Web of Science (WoS) 3
1-1 What is Web of Science? It is not a database, but rather the name of a search system. It searches from multiple databases. Cross-searches over multiple databases can be done. You can access off-campus (through the NU library homepage) However, a Meidai ID and password are necessary. 4
2 Web of Science Core Collection 5
2-1 What is the Web of Science Core Collection? One of the Web of Science databases. Collects not just bibiliographical information, but information on cited references. It's comprised of multiple citation indexes Natural Science (SCI-EXPANDED) ( ) Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) ( ) Arts & Humanities (A&HCI) ( ) Conference Proceedings Citation Index( ) Specialized literature indices ( ) 6
2-2 Basic search methods Top screen : Web of Science 1 Click here 2 Select Web of Science Core Collection 7
2-2 Basic search methods Top screen : Web of Science Core Collection Click here and select your search mode 8
2-2 Basic search methods Basic Search Search records from document keywords or titles Author Search Search for a particular author's records via name, field of specialty, or affiliation Cited Reference Search Search cited reference information for a particular document via items such as author's name Advanced search Search records by combining tags and previous search history 9
2-2 Basic search methods Basic Search : Top Screen 1 Select search fields By clicking here you can add search criteria 10
2-2 Basic search methods Basic Search : Top Screen 2 When a search field has been added When there are two or more search fields, search operations appear 11
2-2 Basic search methods Basic Search : Top Screen 3 Designate the scope of your search Search by years of publication Designate the indices for your search 12
2-2 Basic search methods Regarding the main search fields for basic search Topic Search records from document keywords, titles, or abstracts Author Search records from the document's author's name or author group name Address Search records from the author's affiliation or address Publication Name Search records from journal or book names Enter the full title, or an abbreviated titled followed by a * Ex.) Cancer research or can* res* (you'll also get hits for "canadian") Year Published Ex.) 2007 or (You can't enter such a term as 200*) 13
2-2 Basic search methods Regarding search operations AND operations Use AND to search for records that have all the search terms OR operation Use OR to search for records that have at least one of the search terms NOT operation Use the NOT operation to search for records that have one term, but do not have a specified term. NEAR, NEAR/x Use NEAR to search for records where one search term is within 15 words of another. Use NEAR/x to search for records where one search term is with x words of another. SAME Used primarily in the Address field, searches for records that have both of the terms in the same sentence. 14
2-2 Basic search methods Points to remember when entering search terms Both upper case and lower case letters are acceptable Ex) AIDS, Aids, aids are all seen as the same. Use search operations. The search operation you can use will depend on the field. When using multiple operations, they will be resolved in order of precedence. In order to avoid the order of precedence, put the appropriate search style in parantheses. Search by phrase. Use double quote marks - " " Use wild cards. Put an asterisk (*) at the beginning or middle of the search term. Remember that there's no thesaurus. In order to avoid missed hits, you will need to search using synonyms. 15
2-2 Basic search methods Author Search Author : Last name first initial* Ex) chitwood w* If there are others with the same last name and first initial, it will be difficult to narrow the search to the author you want... Strategies Search together with affiliated institution, department, or post. Try the Author search. Then narrow the search results using field of research or keywords. Find a paper by the author you are looking for, check the listed affiliation, then search again with that affiliation, etc. 16
2-2 Basic search methods Example of Basic Search 1 Search process Search for papers concerning ips cells. Search process Select the topic search criterion. Search both for ips cell and induced pluripotent stem cell. Because there's a chance for "cell" to be in plural, add an asterisk. Use double quotes to make the search terms one phrase. Link the phrases with an OR operation. "ips cell*" OR "induced pluripotent stem cell*" 17
2-2 Basic search methods Example of Basic Search 2 Search results (List view) Number of results Sort by Print / Save Records Analyze Results / Citation report Refine results Usage Count 18
2-2 Basic search methods Example of Basic Search 3 Refining search results Enter keywords Click Check the items you would like to see and click "Refine" Number in paranthesis: number of results Categories Research Areas Document Types Authors Source Titles Group/Corporate Authors Funding Agencies Languages Countries/Territories etc. 19

Advanced Search Top Screen Create a retrieval style and search By combining search history and search field tags, even more detailed searches are possible. Saveable search histories (Requires user registration) Also possible to restrict the search by language and document type. Combination with search history Search Field Tags 41
3 Journal Citation Reports (JCR) 42
3-1 What are Journal Citation Reports? Reports a variety of indicators, such as Impact Factors You can use it directly, or through Web of Science The data is updated once a year (around June or July) The reported values are for 1997 and later. For 1996 or earlier, there are CD-ROM and print products. Archived at Central Library 43
3-2 Impact Factors An indicator showing the average number of times a paper published in that journal is cited. Calculated over a relatively short span There's a tendency for journals that are quickly influential to have a high score. It is an evaluation index of the journal, not of individual papers. It is not something to be used to evaluate research or researchers. It's of use for estimating the importance and influence of a journal. However, it is only a relative comparison to other journals in the same field. 44
Ex.) The 2015 Impact Factor of journal "J". (Times cited): Total number of times that the articles of journal "J" were cited in 2016 = 3-2 Impact Factors How impact factors are calculated (Number of Papers): sum of documents (papers, review articles, conference proceedings) presented in journal "J" in 2014 and Note that changes in journal name or ISSN results in it being considered a new journal There's a restriction on how many documents can be counted in the denominator 45
3-2 Impact Factors Checking impact factors 1 From search results Click on the "View Journal Information" link on a Web of Science search result Quickly see that journal's impact factor Click 46
3-2 Impact Factors Checking impact factors 2 Searching JCR (1) Use JCR via Web of Science. Click 47
