1 Finding the Article: Cochrane Library 1. Go to the Library Homepage, which can be found 2. Click on the Find Articles link. 3. Scroll through the list to COCHRANE LIBRARY or click on the C to get to the databases beginning with the letter C. 4. For off campus access to the Library s database, you will need to click on the green icon located in the first column of the table listing the databases. Click on the name of the database to access it on campus. Click on green icon to log on to database from offcampus. 1

2 5. Type your Library barcode in, click submit. (Your library barcode is found on the back of your student ID). **NOTE: Your Library barcode must be active. If you are not sure if your card is active contact the Distance Education Librarian, Julie Rustad, at Or at (218) , or 1(800) ext Basic Search located on the far right of the screen use when looking for single concept or topic. Type your topic in the box. Click Go. 7. Advanced Search Click the Cochrane Advanced Search link. 2

3 8. Advanced Search used for complex research topics or for searching multiple concepts at one time. This feature allows you to search by Author, Source, Title, etc. To use: Type keywords into Search For boxes. Click on dropdown arrow at the end of the Default Fields box to search title, author, tables, journal title, etc. To string your terms together, click on the dropdown arrow at the end of the AND box. Choose AND, OR, NOT to broaden or narrow your search. o AND narrows searches by combining terms. Citations must have all your terms to be included in results list. Ex. Critical Care AND Pediatrics AND Nursing o OR broadens searches by searching for all terms separately. Citations will have either term. Ex. Infants OR Babies o NOT narrows searches by excluding a portion of a large topic. Citations will have the first term but NOT the second term. Ex. Dogs NOT Poodles, Arthritis NOT Rheumatoid Click Search. 3

4 9. Subject Terms tries to match your keywords to subject headings used in the database. To search for subject headings, click on the MesSH Search link located above the Search For boxes near the top of the page. Type your keyword into the Enter MeSH Term box. o Click Thesaurus to find proper subject heading. o Click Definition to see how term is defined. o Click Go To MeSH Trees to see the broader and narrower terms associated with your topic. 5 10. Restrict Searches allows you to limit your searches. Found on the Advanced Search screen below the Search For boxes. Restrict Search by Product allows you to search within a particular database within Cochrane Library. Restrict Search by Record Status allows you to limit to different types of records (ex. Newest articles on a subject.) Date Range limit to particular years (ex. latest 5 years) Click Search. 5

6 11. Results Screen you will see a list of citations. Record Links to the full-text of an article. Restrict to Limits to 2 different types of articles Reviews or Protocols Sort by Sort records for display by: o Record title Alphabetical by title of article. o Match % - Highest relevancy to your search. o Year - Newest to oldest. Export Results Allows you to export citations and/or abstracts to your computer. o Click the box before the article citation. o Click Export All Results. o Choose the type of Computer you have (PC, Macintosh, Unix or Linux). o Choose Citation or Abstract and Citation. o Click Go. 12. Search History allows you to save or revise previous searches. (See next page for example.) From the Advanced Search screen, click on the Search History link above the Search For boxes. Click on the search terms to view results. 6

7 Click here to view results. To Revise a search, click Edit, which will bring you back to the Advanced Search screen to make changes. Click Delete to delete a search. Use to eliminate specific searches before saving Search History. Click Save Search Strategy to save your searches to your own Account. Click Edi to revise. Click Delete to get rid of a search. Creating an Account Creating an account with Cochrane allows you to save searches From any page within Cochrane, click on My Profile, located in the upper right corner. Click on Register Now. Accessing Saved Searches To access saved searches, click on Log In. Type Log In Name and Password. 7
