Operational Notes Operational Notes General The following sections describe advisories and known problems that pertain to operating Optivity Workgroup on your management station. The following general notes apply to a variety of Optivity applications: Known Problems The BayStack 150 is not a multisegment device. However, it does allow you to isolate individual units from the segment. To isolate a unit from the segment, use Expanded View to open a Show Profile window for the unit and set the Attachment Point parameter to 0. To reconnect a BayStack 150, set the Attachment Point back to 1. Note: Isolating a BayStack 150 Series hub using the Attachment Point parameter disables all management functions except the setting of the Attachment Point parameter. In a routing environment, Optivity Workgroup does not support having multiple networks on a single router interface (a practice known as multinetting). In historic line charts, when a display is zoomed in range, all points in the graph with values greater than the zoom range are normalized. To view the actual value of all the points, increase the zoom range. If you have isolated a cluster for troubleshooting purposes, by definition you have prevented it from communicating. Thus, if you use Expanded View to monitor an isolated cluster, there is no connectivity information available for this cluster only unit, slot, and port information is displayed. If a database error (DBLayer) occurs when you start Optivity Workgroup, this error could indicate that your hard disk is full and the database could not be written. Remove files from your hard disk and restart the system A 9

Release Notes for Optivity Workgroup If you run a program that uses Windows Sockets (WinSock) on a Windows 95 workstation, a gradual increase in the memory used by the operating system might occur over time, especially if the program opens and closes a large number of sockets. You can free the resources associated with a program by exiting the program. If you quit and restart Windows 95, the memory is freed. It is recommended that you use a PostScript printer when printing from Optivity applications. Also, Optivity does not support the Print to File feature. Printing tables across the network does not work. However, locally printing tables is possible. After you finish running the Multiple Community String program, you must restart Optivity Workgroup for the new read community strings to take effect. Any network configuration changes that you made to the communications stack (such as IP address, subnet mask, or default gateway) should also be made in the Workgroup Command Center Options dialog box NMS (Network Management Station) Configuration tab. Choose Options from the Tools menu to display this dialog box, and click the NMS Configuration tab. Afterwards, restart Optivity Workgroup to make the changes take effect. After you exit Optivity Workgroup, wait at least 20 seconds for all Optivity Workgroup background processes to terminate. In Using Optivity Workgroup 4.0, on page 5-13 and 8-6 there are some terms which pertain to Activity view that are unclear. A footnote indicates that terms are defined in Appendix A, but they are not. (56905) The terms are defined here as follows: Pkt Cycle: This is actually the packet cycle average and is computed as the average good packets / seconds. Pkt Acc: Packet Accumulated average computed as accumulated average packets / seconds. %Byte: Computed as the average good bytes / seconds. %Byte Acc: Computed as the average accumulated good bytes / seconds A

Operational Notes Installation The following notes pertain to installation issues: Known Problems The Optivity Workgroup Software CD automatically starts the setup program after the CD is inserted. On some computers, the Windows Autorun feature has either been disabled or does not function properly. If the setup program does not start after about a minute, either start the setup program manually as described in the Getting Started guide, or refer to your computer system documentation for instructions on enabling the Autorun feature. The Optivity Workgroup software is available on CD only. The system on which you are installing the Optivity Workgroup software must have a CD drive. During the installation of Optivity Workgroup, the setup program adds the Optivity Workgroup installation directory to the autoexec.bat file as shown in the example OFF PROMPT $p$g PATH C:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND SET TEMP=C:\TEMP SET PATH=C:\EZLAN\BIN;%PATH% During IPX discovery, Optivity uses the attached IPX server. If the database is not complete, set the following variable in the discover.ini file: TryAltServers=1 During installation, you must provide a gateway address. In a routerless environment, enter the gateway address Also, you must use Range Pinging for discovery. If you experience a problem reinstalling Optivity Workgroup 4.0.2, delete the EZView Path=, Product=, and Version= entries from the [LNMS] section of the WIN.INI file. You can then reinstall Optivity Workgroup A 11

Release Notes for Optivity Workgroup Upgrading to Optivity Workgroup Agent Software IPX Protocol Optivity Workgroup retains your existing Optivity Workgroup device databases when you upgrade from Optivity Workgroup 4.0. When you upgrade from a previous Optivity Workgroup release, you will lose your Optivity Workgroup device databases. The following operational notes pertain to issues related to agent software that are general in nature or exhibit symptoms in more than one Optivity Workgroup application: Known Problems The Model 331X version 5.2 agent does not display any data in the utilization and frame size graphs in the RMON summary window. To resolve this, use agent version 5.3 or later. For BayStack Ethernet hubs and BayStack 100BASE-T hubs, the Show Profile display is unable to show the Location, Name, Version, Contact, and Description MIB object information. Specifically, when performing SNMP requests with group #1 index (Board index and Interface Number) on Distributed 5000 and BayStack Ethernet hubs, the agent returns an Invalid Object message. Additionally, when performing SNMP requests with group #8 index (Ethernet and Segment Number), the agent returns a value of zero for backplane segment numbers 1, 2, and 3. For backplane segment numbers greater than 3, the agent returns an Invalid Object message. Note the following points regarding the IPX protocol: If you want IPX support on a Windows 95 workstation, you must install the Microsoft NetWare component when you are configuring the management station. If you add IPX communications stacks to the management station after installing Optivity, you must reinstall Optivity to ensure that all IPX-related files are installed A

Applications Operational Notes If you remove IPX communications stacks from the management station after installing Optivity, you must delete the IPX references from both the [Optivity] and [LNMS] sections of the synopt.ini file. Find the line that reads: Protocols = IP, IPX and edit it to read: Protocols = IP The following sections list operational notes and known problems for various Optivity Workgroup applications. Agent-related issues are listed under the application in which the symptoms are observed. Such issues are usually listed under Operational Notes because they represent problems with the agent software, and not with the application. Workgroup Command Center These notes pertain to the Workgroup Command Center (WCC) application. Operational Notes When you add a device that Optivity Workgroup cannot communicate with, WCC uses a generic icon for the device. This icon is not updated to reflect the specific device type, even after WCC establishes communication with the device. To update the icon, delete and then re-add the device. If you modify the graph X-axis scale in the Options dialog box from the WCC Tools menu, exit and restart Optivity Workgroup for the changes to take effect. However, you can modify the X-axis scale without restarting Optivity Workgroup by double-clicking the graph and changing the scale in the Options dialog box from the Options button. If all Optivity Workgroup IP devices turn red, check to see if a device address corresponding with a broadcast address (for example, XXX.XXX.XXX.255, Class B with 8-bit subnet mask) exists in the Workgroup Command Center. If so, delete that device and restart Optivity Workgroup. If all Novell server icons turn red in WCC, ensure that you are using a compatible set of NetWare drivers. Nortel Networks recommends that you use the Novell Client package that came with the Novell Server version 4.1 or above. Also, make sure that SNMP.NLM is loaded on the servers A 13

Release Notes for Optivity Workgroup Agent Manager When you view a BayStack 100BASE-T hub equipped with a 100BASE-FX media adapter, Fault and Performance menus do not work properly. These functions are not supported by the agent software. Bug Fixed The BayStack 350 (legacy version) switches now stay open in the Workgroup Command Center after you save the view, exit Workgroup Command Center, reopen Workgroup Command Center, then open the previously saved view. (57173) These notes pertain to the Agent Manager application. Operational Notes The Agent Manager application needs both the MAC address and the IP address of each device to list the device in the main dialog box. Depending on how many devices you are upgrading, you can discover the network using ARP Cache discovery or open Expanded View for each device to ensure that your database is fully populated. When you upgrade an agent using Agent Manager, the boot router settings of the device must be properly configured. Otherwise, Agent Manager will not be able to upgrade the agent. The Revision column of the Image Upgrade dialog box displays the hardware revision letter instead of the firmware revision as stated in the documentation and online Help. Known Problems The LattisWorks software subscription feature used when upgrading agent software in Agent Manager is no longer supported. Agent software upgrades are now available through the Nortel Networks Software Services program. Note: Please disregard all references to the LattisWorks feature in Using Optivity Workgroup 4.0 (Nortel Networks part number G), Chapter 6, Booting NMMs and Downloading Agents A

Alarm Manager Autodiscovery Operational Notes In Agent Manager, during the upgrade procedure, entering the agent key via the Agent Key feature causes the Image Upgrades dialog box to display the key. The # agent XXXXXXXX (agent key) is written to the agent configuration file. Open the configuration file and delete the pound symbol (#) from the agent key before upgrading the agent. Agent Manager may not be able to recommend the correct agent image upgrade version for devices that cannot distinguish an agent maintenance release (for example, for version 5.31, 5 is the major release, 3 is the minor release, and 1 is the maintenance release). After you perform the upgrade, the Status column shows In Progress when it should display Successful. If you relaunch Agent Manager, the Image Upgrade dialog box displays agent image version 5.30 in the Version column instead of It also displays 5.31 in the Recommendation column instead of none even though you have successfully downloaded the upgraded agent image version. These notes pertain to the Alarm Manager application. Known Problem Alarm Manager does not properly report traps received from Nortel Networks routers. These notes pertain to the Expanded View application. Operational Notes Device MAC addresses may not be discovered consistently on the local segment and may be displayed as zero (0). When you run Autodiscovery for the first time, if the system retrieves a Ping response before the ARP Cache discovery occurs, Optivity Workgroup will not query for the MAC address. If Optivity Workgroup does not discover the device MAC address, the Agent Manager application will not be able to list the device in the Image Upgrade dialog box. To fix this problem, launch an Expanded View for each device without a MAC address A 15

Release Notes for Optivity Workgroup Expanded View Bug Fixed The management station now does not hang when you start Autodiscovery against a network including multinetted router loops. (74742) These notes pertain to the Expanded View application. Operational Notes In Expanded View on the BayStack T, the LEDs will not display speed, duplex, and activity for port numbers 12 or higher. The information is available from the agent through a MIB query and network trace. (99235) Expanded View on the BayStack T with version Agent does not show any port LED. This occurs when the device is in a stacked configuration. When running Expanded View on a BayStack 250 device, the Auto Sense display shows incorrect speed information if running version 1.0 agent software. When running Expanded View on a BayStack 250 device, the Show Nodes table is empty if running version 1.0 agent software. After using the Expanded View Validate feature, wait for several seconds for the validation process to complete before selecting any other statistics or diagnostics display from the Expanded View menus. Expanded View does not support Nortel Networks RMON probes. Known Problems A problem occurs when you use Expanded View and then LANarchitect for any of the supported switching devices (Models 281XX or 28200). When you try to view the Expanded View window for the second time, the window is blank. To make the window appear correctly, choose Config > Validate. After launching Expanded View for an Ethernet or token ring NMM installed in the same chassis as a Model 3410 Fast Ethernet NMM, the LEDs of the 3410 appear incorrectly. To view the 3410 LEDs properly, launch Expanded View for the A

Operational Notes Bugs Fixed The LEDs for port numbers above 12 on the Baystack T display correctly in Expanded View. (99235) The Set Partition Failed error message no longer is displayed when you partition a port on a BayStack 450 Switch in Expanded View by right-clicking the desired port and choosing Fault > Partition. (101053) On a BayStack 303 with image 2.1, launching Expanded View now opens the window correctly. Previously, only the Help menu at the top left of the window would appear. (100950) LANarchitect RMON Summary These notes pertain to the LANarchitect application. Operational Notes Although you can display a BayStack Ethernet hub in LANarchitect, software switching of segments is not supported by the agent software. However, the Move button is not deactivated for BayStack Ethernet hubs. For BayStack Ethernet hubs, using LANarchitect to move a cluster to different segments causes the following message to be displayed: Move Cluster - Fail to attach cluster Known Problems LANarchitect cannot be used to move a Model DCM to a different port on the switch. LANarchitect shows the BayStack 10BASE-FL hub and either the 10BASE-T hub AUI MDA or 10BASE-FL MDA as separate components even though they are in the same cluster as other ports on the same hub. These notes pertain to the Optivity Workgroup RMON Summary application. Operational Note+ To view full RMON data for the BayStack 50x Token Ring Hub, invoke the application for the two interfaces A 17

Release Notes for Optivity Workgroup RouterMan These notes pertain to the RouterMan application. Operational Notes If the Browse Profiles display for the Agent Identification Server shows a time out for the router address, close RouterMan and restart the application. In RouterMan, some of the XNS Host Table and Filter Table displays may always show Get in the status bar. The Administration Status field for Nortel Networks routers 7.55 and above displays the number 1, 2, or 3, with the following meanings: 1=up, 2= down, and 3=testing. RouterMan generates an Unknown Protocol message in the fault log if the router receives a BOFL packet. Known Problems When RouterMan shows the administration status as up and the operational status as down, the fault symbol, performance symbol, and Fault Log do not show or report a fault. On a Novell file server with routing capability turned on, the SysName, SysLocation, and Contact Person fields cannot be set NULL using RouterMan. In the RouterMan Fault Log, no entry is available in the Cause field for Nortel Networks routers. For Nortel Networks routers running the VINES protocol, the Configuration Routing Table displays identical values in each table entry. When saving data that spans more than one full day, the RouterMan history graph reports inaccurate date and time. In RouterMan documentation and online Help for on both PC and Unix platforms an incorrect formula for protocol utilization is used. The correct formula is, (InOctet + OutOctet) * 8 * 100 / interface speed / seconds. (57668) A

Using the Optivity Workgroup Documentation CD When retrieving configuration information from Cisco routers at version 10.x or later the information is displayed with missing carriage returns and line feeds. As a work around, use the UNIX to DOS utility to convert text to DOS format. Or open the file using a DOS editor and save it using File > Save As. (57771) Bug Fixed The following error messages do not occur when you start Router Man 1.2 on either a Windows 95 or Windows NT management station. (104413) Error insufficient Memory Abnormal program termination Using the Optivity Workgroup Documentation CD To use the Optivity Workgroup Documentation CD, you must first have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your system. Installing Adobe Acrobat Reader To install Adobe Acrobat Reader: 1. Place the Optivity Workgroup Documentation CD into your CD-ROM drive. 2. Select Start > Run. The Run dialog box opens. 3.
