5 Introducing Windows 8 The XPS 12 convertible Ultrabook works with the new Windows 8 operating system to deliver the latest apps for work and play in an enhanced touch-based experience all without sacrificing PC functionality. Getting Started with Windows 8 Home Screen When you login you are first presented with the new Windows 8 Modern UI aka Start Screen. This is a modern take on the classic Start Menu. From this screen you can open applications from the Tiles, you can search for all applications installed, all files located in your user profile and access settings. Modern UI (Modern User Interface) and Searching From the Modern UI screen you have the ability to search for everything you may need to use. From the Metro UI simply typing Adobe yields the above results. From the default search you can see that it has by default search Apps. By simply clicking on Settings or Files it would bring up varying results depending on what you re looking for. This side bar is also referred to as the Charms bar. 4

6 Charms Bar As pictured above the default Charms bar is accessed by either a) Swiping in from the right hand side of the screen b) Or by moving the mouse to the top right corner of the screen. The charms bar gives you quick access to various options on the computer. Adding Printers From the charms bar you need to click on Settings Change PC Settings Devices Now click on Add Device and after a few seconds a list of printers will appear. Select the required printer and wait for it to install 5

7 Connecting to Other Wireless Networks 1. Swipe in from the right hand edge of the screen to access the charms bar 2. Tap on settings 3. Tap on Available 4. Select the Wireless Network you want to connect to 5. Tap on connect 6. Enter the Security Key 7. Check for connected status and complete Windows 8 The Online World Windows 8 is all about connectivity, being ONLINE not offline You need to be connected to some form of wireless connection to access the internet You need to be connected to the internet or College network to access your College either via Outlook or Webmail NO OFFLINE FOLDERS You need to be connected to the College network to access your College Drive NO OFFLINE FILE SYNC 6

8 H: Drive College Provided Storage Space Limit 5GB You need to be connected to the College network to access your H:\ Drive. To access your College Drive from Home or Out of College you will need to use the 2x Software Your H:\Drive capacity is 5 GB and you cannot save more than that on H: Drive. NOTE: You are strongly advised to back up your Personal contents, photos, movies, music on your Dell XPS 12 to an external Hard Drive to prevent data loss. 7

9 Windows 8 Store To use the Windows Store you will be required to sign up for a Microsoft account. To be eligible to create a Microsoft account you will have to have a valid address. We suggest you have a personal address for this as any purchases made are linked back to this address. If you do not have a valid address please visit mail.live.com If this icon has a small number in the bottom right corner that is telling you that some of the applications installed require an update. Click on the Store Tile In the Store you can browse the particular categories or you can search for something in particular. If you type Learn Windows8 the below results should appear. 8

10 Click on Learn Windows 8 (light bulb icon) result then click on Install You will now be greeted with the below Login Screen. Follow the prompts to create a Microsoft account. Once done the application will install and you now have a Microsoft account and a handy Windows 8 reference application to help you navigate Windows 8. Installing Software Windows 8 is all about being connected and as such it is more open and gives the user a lot of freedom to install software within a controlled network. To be more productive and use the Laptop to its full potential we have setup up a specific username and password for you to install software i.e. itunes or Chrome When prompted for a username/password while installing new software please use the following. Username: NB(Asset Number)\JPCStaff ie.nb20000\jpcstaff Password: Contact ICT Office 9

11 VASS When needing to use VASS you MUST use Internet Explorer (Desktop Version) To access Desktop version click on Desktop Tile then click the Internet Explorer icon in bottom left corner of Taskbar. 10

12 Tips and Tricks Screen Rotation To prevent screen rotation, push the little button located on the left side of the notebook behind the power switch.
