1 The Villages Computer Club The Villages Computer Club will host another great WORKSHOP event at Lake Miona Recreation Center on Friday April 27th at 1:00 pm. Here in an informal setting you will be able to get your computer questions and concerns answered by knowledgeable experts. The subject tables will be ipad, AOL, , Kindle Fire, Computer Security, Working with your Photos, Facebook, Skype, Questions on XP, VISTA and Windows 7 and General PC questions. This is always a time where you can gain lots of helpful computer knowledge and have a good time. We will have refreshments and our 50/50 and door prices. A:It depends on the combination of programs you want to use. For example, America Online has it s own proprietary version of Internet Explorer but can get along with either Firefox, Google Chrome or Microsoft Internet Explorer. Most programs can get along with these, but if you begin to use browsers other than these you may expect some conflicts. In the interest of system stability and user sanity, try to settle on one Web browser and stick with it. But you should have another browser installed, just in case your default browers has a problem. Once you compile a long list of Web bookmarks, there's even more reason to stick with a preferred browser, rather than jumping back and forth. ****************** Browser Addons Can t get to some web sites? Message from HP Total Care I would recommend you to manage add-ons on the Internet Explorer of your computer. To manage add-ons, follow the steps provided below:

2 1. Click an open Internet Explorer. 2. Click on Tools option. 3. Click on Manage Add-ons. 4. Click on the drop-down arrow beside the Show option and select Add-ons that have been used by Internet Explorer. 5. Check if the contents on the Add-on lists are Enabled. 6. To enable an add-on listed, Click on the options that are Disabled and click on the radio button beside the Enable under Settings option and put mark on it. 7. Click on OK. Rightclick on the IE menu bar anyplace and you'll bet a drop down list. Select the bars you want, then click Lock the Toolbar. ****** Internet Explorer Browsing History List The History list is a list of websites you ve visited. IF you open IE and click the down arrow at the end of the address bar, you will see a list of sites you ve visited. You can click one of these and return to that site immediately. This is convenient sometimes, but as the list gets longer and longer, it can be inconvenient. Your settings control how many items are contained in the IE History list. You may clear these any time. The following is for IE 8. If you have an earlier or later version of IE, your settings may be slightly different. 1. With IE open, click Tools Internet Options. 2. Under Browsing History click Delete. The screen that comes up should have the first 3 items checked. TIF, Cookies & History. You may use this Delete feature to clear these files any time you choose to do this. 3. Click Delete at the bottom of that screen. When the deletions are done, it will return to the previous screen. 4. Click Settings under Browsing History and reduce the space allowed to 8MB(min)

3 5. At the bottom of that screen, you may reduce the number of days to allow History to be kept. I set mine to 0. While you re working it will allow a few history to accumulate but not many. Note: If you re using AOL, you may simply click Edit on your AOL menu bar and select Clear Toolbar History. I do this each time I leave an important personal website, such as banking. ********************** Microsoft Knowledge Base Much info can be found to solve problems related to Microsoft software at the Knowledge Base (kb) at Into the search bar type KB and the number you're looking for. Below are just a few examples of what can be found there. Q Drive Is No Longer Bootable After Restoring Root Directory Q Sharing Violation Using NetWare 3.x FILER.EXE Q Problems Accessing Floppy Disk Drives ***** AOL Organize Folder Saved and Replaced More about backing up the AOL Organize Folder for safe keeping On AOL, if you click FILE and then click MAIL SAVED ON MY PC, it takes you to the PFC (Personal File Cabinet). On the left side of that screen, you see the MY MAIL FOLDERS list. INBOX: New, Old,Sent,Spam, Recently Deleted SAVED ON AOL: Here you may create folders and then SAVE to them. These folders with the in them will be saved on the AOL server and even if your computer crashes, when you reinstall AOL, these folders with their will again be available to you. SAVED ON MY PC: Here you may also create folders and SAVE to them. But because they are saved to your PC and not to the AOL server, if your computer crashes, they will be gone bye bye. But if periodically you save a copy of the Organize folder of the AOL version you are using, that Organize folder will contain, all the in ALL the PFC, the favorites, address book,etc. That was on your computer at the time you saved it.

4 IF you reload it, all those items will be available to you again when you open AOL, even if you've reinstalled AOL. The easiest way to Save the Organize folder, is to purchase a flash drive, plug it into a USB port, and save the Organize folder to it or save it to your desktop. IF your computer crashes, you've still got the info from your AOL PFC. If you never need it, good! But if you do, it's sure nice to have. Copy Organize folder: 1. Rightclick the AOL icon in the startup tray and select System Information. 2. Click the Utilities tab and select Close AOL. 3. Click AOL Software and select Open Data folder. Click the AOL version once from which you wish to SAVE the organize folder. 4. Scroll down and Rightclick the Organize folder and select COPY. 5. Rightclick Start...click Explore to list your disks. Scroll down and rightclick the removable disk that is your flash drive and select Paste. The Organize folder will be copied to the flash drive. Or select your Desktop in the C:\ drive and paste the Organize folder there. Note: At any time in the future you want to know the date it was copied, just go to the flash drive and rightclick the Organize folder and select Properties...There it will tell you the date. Each time you copy the Organize folder to the flash drive it will tell you that there is an organize folder already there and do you wish to replace it...you'll say YES, because you'll be copying the latest Organize folder. Replace the Organize folder After a CLEAN install of AOL (meaning you first uninstalled all versions of AOL), the Organize folder will have only those items that were stored on the AOL server at the time of the install. But if you replace that new Organize folder on the new install of AOL with the Organize folder on your flash drive or desktop, all the info that was in the PFC on the date you saved the Organize folder will again be seen in the PFC of the new install of AOL. ***************************************************************** ****** Can't See Date, Subject, Names in your new AOL list? Following the presentation will be refreshments, door prizes and a problem solving session. The Villages Computer Club will meet at 1 p.m. Friday March 1st at La Hacienda Recreation Center. The program will feature a presentation on Skype and Manycam by Paul Rabenold and Fred Benson. There is
