9 2. OVERVIEW IN THIS SECTION The Technology Architecture Logical Architecture isense is based on a proprietary and robust video counting technology for realtime detection and counting of pedestrians in video images. isense converts video data into real-time counting information, storing it in a central database. The description in this user guide focuses on a single isense Video Detection Unit (VDU) and the bundled software The Technology Video counting is a domain of Video Content Analysis (VCA) that applies object detection and tracking technologies to count pedestrians entering or exiting a region of interest. The field of VCA is also known as Computer Vision Architecture isense is comprised of different modules, each fulfilling a specific task. The system is scalable from a single machine up to a large network analyzing a large number of video cameras. The architecture remains the same, although the component parts may end up residing on different computers. V1.6 Page 2-1

10 isense User Guide 2.3. Logical Architecture isense FIGURE 2-1: LOGICAL ARCHITECTURE The logical architecture can be broken down as follows: isense analyzes video frames in order to detect, track and count objects by their motion in to, or out of, the designated regions isense Manager isense Manager receives and displays video and data from the isense device, and is also the application for setting up the analytics for the isense Device Explorer Device Explorer is used to setup the network configuration and advanced settings of the device Count Watch DB Writer The Count Watch DB Writer receives the counting data from the isense and stores it in the Count Watch Database Count Watch Database The Count Watch Database is based on Microsoft SQL technology and stores all the counting information received Count Watch Reports Count Watch Reports is a web based application for retrieving the counting data from the Count Watch Database using Internet Explorer. See the CW Reports User Guide for more information. Page 2-2 V1.6

13 System Setup ground on the right, and then tighten the screws on top to ensure the wires remain in place. The ground wire usually has no writing on it, but a voltage tester should be used to make certain. FIGURE 3-2: ISENSE CIRCUIT BOARD CONNECTIONS 3. Connect the isense to the network using an ethernet network cable plugged into the ethernet port on the circuit board. 4. Optional: physically connect a video camera to the External Video Input socket located on the isense (only the socket on the right is functional). Use a BNC connector. 5. Optional: physically connect the counting relays to the circuit board. 6. Close the top panel of the isense and replace the screw holding the panel in place. NOTE: See the Appendix (on page 10-1) for the technical specifications of all connections Camera Installation Correct camera positioning and installation is the key to obtaining good system performance as follows: 1. For accurate counting, minimum camera height (the distance from the bottom of the lens to the floor) should be 2.5m or 8ft, and the camera should point vertically downwards (see diagram below). 2. Accuracy can be reduced by reflections from the floor and by hard shadows. Position camera and optional lighting sources to minimize these factors. V1.6 Page 3-3

14 isense User Guide 3. Make sure the people to be counted are fully visible in the image, even when traveling near the edges of the counting zone. Increase the height of the camera or change its lens if required. Consider the use of a fisheye lens where necessary. FIGURE 3-3: ISENSE INSTALLATION HEIGHT 3.5. Installing the Bundled Software Install the bundled software to control and manage isense Installing.NET Framework The.NET Framework is a component of the Microsoft Windows operating system used to build and run Windows-based applications. The software requires.net Framework 2.0 to run properly. Part of the installation of the bundled software checks if.net Framework 2.0 already exists on the computer and offers to install the software if it cannot find it. The software will not work without the.net Framework Upgrading to Version 1.6 The following instructions are only needed when upgrading isense from version 1.5 with existing data. Follow the procedure below to retain all data saved to the database so far, while upgrading the software to version 1.6. Page 3-4 V1.6
