16 PureDisk Remote Office Edition (ROE) installation overview Installation overview installation process are identical for unclustered and clustered storage pools Figure 1-1 shows the major steps in the installation process Figure 1-1 Storage pool installation steps Install PDLinux on each node On the PDLinux installer s main menu, select one of the following methods: Install (recommended) Expert Prepare the nodes for the storage pool installation See the chapter called Preparing to configure the storage pool in the Storage Pool Installation Guide Start the storage pool configuration wizard Use the wizard to configure a storage pool for the PureDisk application Attach clients and start backing up files Table 1-1 explains the installation process in general terms

PureDisk Remote Office Edition (ROE) installation overview Installation overview 17 Table 1-1 Installation overview Step Step 1 Description Install PDLinux from the PureDisk 663 software DVD The PDLinux main menu displays several installation options For production purposes, use one of the following two methods: The Install method This method uses the PDLinux installer The installer prompts you for node addresses, network information, and so on Symantec recommends that you use the Install PDLinux installation method The Expert method This method uses the SUSE Linux YaST installation tool For more information about how to install PDLinux, see the following: See About installing PDLinux manually on page 41 Step 2 Perform additional tasks on the nodes to prepare them for the Storage Pool Configuration Wizard You might need to perform other tasks on the nodes after you install PDLinux but before you run the Storage Pool Configuration Wizard For example, these other tasks can prepare the node for clustering, if necessary Make sure to review the following before you start the Storage Pool Configuration Wizard: See About preparing to configure the storage pool on page 59 Step 3 Run the Storage Pool Configuration Wizard to configure PureDisk on the PDLinux nodes The configuration wizard guides you through licensing, storage configuration, specifying clustering options, and other tasks For more information about how to configure the storage pool, see the following: See About configuring the storage pool on page 81 Step 4 Perform post-installation tasks such as attaching clients, configuring single-port communication, and so on See About completing the storage pool installation on page 111 The PureDisk software installation process assumes knowledge of Linux system installation procedures, including how to specify network configurations and how to partition disks Please read through the instructions in the following manuals before you begin an installation: The PureDisk Getting Started Guide This manual, the PureDisk Storage Pool Installation Guide If you need more information, see the SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 SP4 documentation on the following Novell documentation Web site:

18 PureDisk Remote Office Edition (ROE) installation overview Types of storage pools wwwnovellcom/documentation/sles10 See About PureDisk installations on page 13 Types of storage pools Table 1-2 explains the characteristics of different PureDisk storage pools Table 1-2 Type of storage pool Types of storage pools Description An all-in-one, single-node storage pool A multinode, unclustered storage pool In an all-in-one storage pool, there is only one node During the installation process, you first install PDLinux on the one node Later, you configure the PureDisk application to run on the node The installation process puts all PureDisk services on the single node This kind of a storage pool is not highly available, so no clustering software is included in the installation In a multinode storage pool, PureDisk services are installed on two or more nodes During the installation process, your first step is to install PDLinux on each node In a storage pool, you can have only one storage pool authority service, but you can have more than one instance of the other PureDisk services You need to plan the services you want to configure on each node When you run the Storage Pool Configuration Wizard, make sure to start the wizard from the node that you want to designate as the storage pool authority The Storage Pool Configuration Wizard installs the PureDisk application on each node, and creates PureDisk services on each node A clustered storage pool A clustered storage pool is a highly available multinode storage pool The failover feature guarantees that the storage pool is always up and running The Veritas Cluster Server (VCS) software ensures that the cluster can failover The PureDisk Storage Pool Configuration Wizard installs the VCS software for you automatically during the wizard session The Storage Pool Configuration Wizard prompts you to designate some nodes as active nodes and to designate other nodes as passive nodes These nodes are as follows: An active node hosts PDLinux and other PureDisk services A passive node hosts PDLinux but no other services During a failover, a passive node receives services from a failing node You need at least one passive node in a highly available storage pool

PureDisk Remote Office Edition (ROE) installation overview Types of storage pools 19 You can add additional nodes to any kind of storage pool if your processing needs change You cannot, however, transform an unclustered storage pool into a clustered storage pool Clustering must be enabled when you create the storage pool In an unclustered storage pool, the nodes cannot failover in case of a disaster When you configure this kind of storage pool, the Storage Pool Configuration Wizard does not display the clustering pages to you during your configuration session Figure 1-2 shows an unclustered two-node storage pool example and shows the services that reside on both nodes Figure 1-2 An unclustered two-node storage pool Node 1: Storage pool authority Metabase server Node 2: Content router Metabase engine NetBackup Export Engine Figure 1-3 shows a clustered three-node storage pool and shows the services that reside on the nodes

20 PureDisk Remote Office Edition (ROE) installation overview Types of storage pools Figure 1-3 A clustered three-node storage pool Node 1: Storage pool authority Metabase server Metabase engine Content router Node 2: Content router Metabase engine NetBackup export engine Three network connections per node: One connects the cluster to the public network Two others form the private heartbeat monitor Node 3: Passive node

PureDisk Remote Office Edition (ROE) installation overview About third-party components 21 In Figure 1-3, the first node is an all-in-one system The second node hosts an extra content router, an extra metabase engine, and a NetBackup export engine The third node is a passive node See About PureDisk installations on page 13 About third-party components PureDisk uses third-party components as a part of its architecture The following warning message explains how to administer the software in a PureDisk storage pool with regard to these third-party components Warning: PureDisk uses third-party components as part of its architecture As an administrator, you should not upgrade third-party components to a newer version; doing so may affect your ability to obtain support from Symantec Symantec monitors the releases of these third-party components Symantec also provides upgrades and patches to address vulnerability, performance, and stability problems that can affect the software The Linux operating system is part of the PureDisk software and is based on the standard SUSE Linux operating system by Novell Symantec removed some packages from the SUSE Linux installation and added some packages to make Linux suitable for the appliance platform A complete list of Linux packages contained in the PureDisk software, as well as the source code for such packages, is available from Symantec upon request Do not install additional third-party software on the computers in a PureDisk storage pool Any such installation is an unsupported activity Such installations can cause service interruptions and problems with product stability See About PureDisk installations on page 13

22 PureDisk Remote Office Edition (ROE) installation overview About third-party components

Chapter 2 Choosing a PDLinux installation method This chapter includes the following topics: About PDLinux installations Preparing to install PDLinux Disk partitioning and the PDLinux installation methods About PDLinux installations Install the PDLinux operating system software on every computer that you plan to use as a PureDisk node For example, you can deploy PureDisk as follows: If you have two computers, you can distribute the PureDisk services over the two computers You can configure one computer to host a content router and another computer to host all the other services Remember to install PDLinux on both computers before you install any services If you have several computers, you can create a clustered storage pool To configure the cluster, first install PDLinux on all the computers that you want to use in the storage pool, including the passive nodes Later in the installation process, you install the clustering software The PDLinux installation procedure assumes knowledge of Linux disk partitioning Linux is case-sensitive When the installation procedure instructs you to create the /Storage partition, make sure to type an uppercase S PureDisk expects this partition to be named with an uppercase S Make sure that you reserve /Storage for PureDisk s exclusive use Do not write data to this partition

24 Choosing a PDLinux installation method Preparing to install PDLinux Note: The PureDisk operating system was known as PDOS in previous PureDisk releases Starting with the PureDisk 661 release, the PureDisk operating system was called PDLinux If the procedure you want to perform involves both PureDisk 665 and an older release, you might see both names used in the user interfaces The PureDisk documentation, however, always uses the term PDLinux to refer to the PureDisk operating system, installation wizard, and tools The following topics contain information about PDLinux installations: See Preparing to install PDLinux on page 24 See Disk partitioning and the PDLinux installation methods on page 29 Preparing to install PDLinux The following procedure explains how to prepare a server for a PDLinux installation and how to choose an installation method To prepare for a PDLinux installation 1 Prepare your site and your computer for a PDLinux installation See Preparing a computer for a PDLinux installation on page 24 2 Clean the computer Perform this step if the computer hosts PDLinux software at this time See (Optional) Cleaning a node that hosted PDLinux previously on page 26 3 Choose a PDLinux installation method See Choosing an installation method on page 27 Preparing a computer for a PDLinux installation The following procedure explains how to prepare a computer for a PDLinux installation

Choosing a PDLinux installation method Preparing to install PDLinux 25 To prepare a computer for a PDLinux installation 1 Obtain the PureDisk release media for the release you want to install 2 (Optional) Configure a hardware RAID controller for the disks that are attached to the node Symantec recommends that you use RAID technology To use a hardware RAID, configure it now Your alternative is a software RAID Make sure that you are familiar with the information about write caching in the PureDisk Getting Started Guide You can enable write caching on your external RAID If you enable write caching, make sure that the information in the cache memory cannot be lost due to a power interruption A power interruption can lead to data loss 3 (Conditional) Configure a static address on the DHCP server Perform this step if you want the node to use DHCP addressing Alternatively, you can configure static addressing for a node during the PDLinux installation 4 Make sure that only the active network card for this server node is connected to the network Unplug all other network cards that are cabled to your network You reconnect the network cards before you run the Storage Pool Configuration Wizard 5 Gather installation information The PDLinux installer prompts you for network information, and it requires you to create additional information during the installation process The following list shows the information that the PDLinux installer prompts you to supply: The password for the root user on this computer This password cannot contain the pipe character ( ) or the equal sign character (=) The FQDN for this computer The IP address for this computer The netmask for this computer The IP address of your site's primary and (optionally) secondary DNS servers The primary and (optionally) secondary search domains for each computer

26 Choosing a PDLinux installation method Preparing to install PDLinux The SPA Installer Password The PDLinux installer prompts you to specify a password for the Storage Pool Configuration Wizard Later, you use this password to log into the Storage Pool Configuration Wizard The storage pool authority node's FQDN For a multinode storage pool, the installer prompts for the storage pool authority node's FQDN when you install PDLinux on the non-storage pool authority nodes Clustered storage pools are multinode storage pools This action registers the node with the storage pool authority Symantec requires that you install PDLinux first on the computer that you want to use for the storage pool authority node The root password for the computer that you want to designate as the storage pool authority node 6 Insert the PureDisk software disk into a drive that is capable of reading a DVD If you want to configure a multinode or clustered storage pool, Symantec requires that you configure the storage pool authority node first Make sure that this node is the node you want to use for this storage pool's storage pool authority 7 Boot the computer Type the following command: # reboot 8 Proceed to one of the following topics: Proceed to See (Optional) Cleaning a node that hosted PDLinux previously on page 26 See Choosing an installation method on page 27 Circumstance If you want to install PDLinux on a computer that has hosted PDLinux previously If you want to install PDLinux on a computer that has never hosted PDLinux See About PDLinux installations on page 23 (Optional) Cleaning a node that hosted PDLinux previously Perform this procedure if the following are true: PDLinux has been installed on this node previously

Choosing a PDLinux installation method Preparing to install PDLinux 27 You want to perform an Install installation or a Onedisk installation For information about these installation methods, see the following: See Choosing an installation method on page 27 To clean a node before you perform an Install installation or a Onedisk installation 1 Use the arrow keys to select Install or Onedisk and press Enter 2 When the Enter PureDisk OS Root Password pop-up window appears, press Ctrl+Alt+F2 3 At the system prompt, type the following command: # dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/<disk> bs=1 count=100 4 Repeat step 3 for every disk that is attached to this node: 5 Press Ctrl+Alt+F7 6 Proceed to the following: See About the PDLinux installation wizard on page 31 See About PDLinux installations on page 23 Choosing an installation method The following procedure explains how to choose an installation method and begin the installation

28 Choosing a PDLinux installation method Preparing to install PDLinux To choose a PDLinux installation method and begin the installation 1 Use the arrow keys and press Enter to choose one of the following PDLinux installation methods: Boot from Hard Disk Install Select this option if you performed an installation, but you did not remove the PureDisk software disk from the drive Select this option if the server has several disks in an external storage cabinet You configure the storage partition during the storage pool installation process Symantec recommends the Install option for general production use Onedisk Select this option to install PDLinux on one internal disk The Onedisk option is suited to computers that have an internal RAID system configured into one internal disk Use the Onedisk option when the computer has no external storage You can use the Onedisk option for unclustered demonstration storage pools The Onedisk option configures the storage partition automatically Expert OS_Upgrade Select this option if the server has any number of disks, of any type Select the Expert option only if the Install option failed The Expert option requires you to install PDLinux, customize the PDLinux installation, and run additional scripts This method uses the YaST interface and is not menu-driven Select the Expert option only if the Install option does not work Select this option if you have PDLinux installed on this node and you need to upgrade PDLinux During installation, the system goes through several installation steps These steps include loading the PDLinux software from the CD-ROM drive, rebooting from the hard disk, and completing the configuration process In the preceding tables, the partition sizes for the Onedisk and Install options are minimum sizes Symantec recommends that you do not decrease these sizes manually For information about disk partitioning, see the following: See Disk partitioning and the PDLinux installation methods on page 29
