1 Installing and configuring Windows Subsystem for Linux 1 Installing and configuring Windows Subsystem for Linux for my lectures Operating Systems and Parallel Programming (November 2017) The 2017 Fall Creators Update for Microsoft Windows 10 terminates the beta status of Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) so that it is now fully integrated into the operating system. Nevertheless, you still have to activate it manually. You can find a description on the following web site or you can use the following description to activate and use it. Login as Administrator and click on the windows icon at the left bottom corner of the screen with the right mouse button and then with the left mouse button on Apps und Features. Choose Programme und Features in the right column of the new window. Now choose Windows-Features aktivieren oder deaktivieren in the left column of the new windows. Scroll to the end of the new window and select Windows Subsystem für Linux

2 Installing and configuring Windows Subsystem for Linux 2 You have to reboot Windows after some time. After some time you can login as Administrator once more. Click on the windows icon at the left bottom corner of the screen with the right mouse button and choose Windows Power- Shell (Administrator). Enter the command bash in the new window and then for example the space bar to continue. Enter the address in your favourite browser. You get the following window.

4 Installing and configuring Windows Subsystem for Linux 4 Choose Starten. It takes a few minutes before you get the following window where you can enter a username and password. You can change some preferences for the window if you click with the right mouse button into the title bar and choose Eigenschaften to open the following window. Now you have to install a few packages. Some packages for emacs24 and xemacs21 couldn t be found so that you have to update everything (you get the message E: Unable to fetch some archives, maybe run apt-get update or try with --fix-missing? in that case). Sometimes you have to answer the question Do you want to continue? [Y/n] Y with Y (remind the capital letter) and sometimes you have to enter the password that you have chosen above. emacs throws many warnings without the package dbus-x11 (lower letter x ). Use man apt, man apt-get, and man apt-cache to learn something about the package handling utility. I installed the packages listed in the next window. emacs24 isn t displayed in line 2 of the command line history and line 9 must be dbus-x11.

5 Installing and configuring Windows Subsystem for Linux 5 Microsoft doesn t provide a X11 Graphical User Interface (GUI) so that you have to install for example VcXsrv. You can find a short installation and configuration manual for VcXsrv on my web page. Use XLaunch for a connection to exin from our Linux lab as described in the manual on my web page and start VcXsrv to use programs with X11 GUI from Ubuntu on the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL). Set the environment variable DISPLAY before you start a program with X11 GUI (bash: export DISPLAY=:0 and tcsh: setenv DISPLAY :0). Use export NO_AT_BRIDGE=1 or setenv NO_AT_BRIDGE 1 if you get a message like WARNING **: Couldn't connect to accessibility bus: Failed to connect to socket /tmp/dbus-ps2jm8z1x8: Connection refused when you start a program with X11 GUI. Use export LC_ALL=C or setenv LC_ALL C if you don t like the message Warning: Missing charsets in String to FontSet conversion when you start xemacs. The Firewall from Windows shows a window when you start VcXsrv the first time. Choose Abbrechen and don t allow any access because X11 allows full control of the computer and is unencrypted so that it would be possible to reveal passwords or to misuse the machine. Everything works fine with localhost ports so that it isn t necessary to open any ports of the firewall.

6 Installing and configuring Windows Subsystem for Linux 6 Use the Windows Advanced Firewall settings to check that VcXsrv doesn t have any access and disable the access if necessary. You can start WSL if you click on the windows icon at the left bottom corner of the screen with the left mouse button and choose Ubuntu. Now everything should work as expected. The whole installation process can take a few hours.
