1 SP40Plus Flash Memory Dow nload Procedure The SP40Plus printer models are equipped with flash memories. The base code can be downloaded into the printer through the parallel port. In addition, when the Ethernet is present the codes can be downloaded through the Ethernet LAN port. This procedure supports Windows systems running from 9x to Windows 10 (32bit & 64bit) and it is applicable to the following code version levels: SP40Plus base code: version level v1.10 or higher 1. Flash Memory dow nload thr ough par allel port 1.1. Connect a standard parallel cable to the default parallel port (LPT1) of a PC and to the printer parallel port On the printer open the main cover, then press and hold down the ST1 key. Power On the printer without releasing the key Release the key when all LEDs of the printer operator panel are blinking. At the display the message Waiting code appears In a DOS window type: copy filename lpt1 /b <Return> Example: copy sp40plus_v114.img lpt1 /b This command copies the code into the flash memory While the file is copied into the flash memory, the printer LEDs are blinking in rotation mode and in the display the messages Receiving and Erasing appear step by step When the file has been successfully loaded the LEDs are blinking alternately and in the display the message INIT can be read. Close the cover and the printer enters the READY

Flash Memory dow nload thr ough USB port For downloading firmware via USB port, Compuprint makes use of the tool COPYCOM for which is essential that there is available one serial com-port between com1 and com9 inclusive. Hence, before connecting the printer, please, enter the device manager in WINDOWS and give free one port, if necessary. Leave the device manager window open for an easy control Connect a standard USB cable to the default USB port of a computer and to the printer USB port On the printer open the main cover, then press and hold down the ST1 key. Power on the printer without releasing the key Release the key when all LEDs of the printer operator panel are blinking. At the display the message Waiting code appears If the CDC driver (Compuprint USB to serial driver) is not installed at the PC, you are asked where the driver is located. You can select CD or browse on the harddisk. After the successful driver installation your device manager shows an entry like this: Compuprint USB to Serial Driver (COM9) 2.5. Look for the file copycom.exe on the driver CD and copy it into the directory where the firmware is to be found.

In a DOS window type: copycom.exe filename COMx <Return> Example: copycom sp40plus_v114.img com9 Note: x is the number of the virtual serial port created by CDC driver. This command copies the code into the flash memory While the file is copied into the flash memory, the printer LEDs are blinking in rotation mode and in the display the messages Receiving and Erasing appear step by step When the file has been successfully loaded the LEDs are blinking alternately and in the display the message INIT can be read. Close the cover and the printer enters the READY

4 3. Flash Memor y dow nload through Ethernet LAN por t 3.1. The printer must be in Ready state. The buffer is empty and no LED is flashing. The printer IP is known and the printer is connected with the Ethernet network Open the Windows command line shell by pressing Windows Start: Enter cmd and open the offered file cmd.exe with the right mouse key by selecting administrator Select with the command line editor the directory where the firmware to be updated is stored Open the FTP connection to the printer, using the printer IP address. Sample: ftp Type root for the login, insert the password (default password: root) and type the commands: ha bin cd firmware 3.6. Start to transfer the binary file by typing the command: put filename.bin Instead of filename.bin enter the name of your chosen firmware file. Sample: put SP40plus-LAN_v187.img When the file is successfully transferred, the following message appears on the host screen:.file has been submitted. Here you are a typical screen shot:

5 3. Flash Memor y dow nload through Ethernet LAN por t 3.7. Close the FTP connection by typing the command: bye 3.8. Once the FTP is closed and the binary file has been correctly transferred (no error on step 3.4), the code updating process will start. The old code is erased and the new binary file is written into the flash memory. If an error occurred on step 3.4, the updating process doesn t start. After the printer is restarted, you can return to step 3.2 and open the FTP connection again While the file is copied into the flash memory, the printer LEDs are blinking in rotation When the file has been successfully loaded, the LEDs start blinking in alternative After about 10 seconds the printer automatically restarts with the new code in use. Error Recover y Proc edure. In case of base or LAN code error, the LEDs start blinking continously. After that, the LAN code enables the BootP (BootStrap) protocol service and requests the binary file over the Ethernet LAN interface port. It is needed to have a remote BootP Server to transfer the binary file requested by the printer via TFTP (Trivial File Transfer Protocol). Independently from the code version level in use, the names of the binary files requested by the printer are: basecode.bin for the base codes. lancode.bin for the LAN code. The current base and LAN binary files must be renamed as above and the two files must be available at the BootP Server location If the BootP Server is available, the download of the binary file will start and the new code is written into the flash memory. When the code is successfully loaded, the LEDs are blinking in alternative After about 10 seconds the printer automatically restarts with the new code in use. If an error occurs while the file is written into the flash memory, the printer restarts asking again the binary file via the BootP protocol service. If for any reason it is not possible to recover the errors using the LAN interface port, you can try to recover the error using the parallel or the USB port as described above. In any case, the parallel port can be also used if the BootP Server is not available. Status:
