4 Chapter 1 1 Introduction EnFuzionSP is a parallel computing enabling software that enables users of PSS E to shorten simulation time and increase user productivity through the use of parallel computing technology. This document describes how to install and license the EnFuzionSP Workstation Edition software. Please note the following naming conventions used in the remainder of this document. EnFuzionSP is the name of the software package. For simplicity, we will refer to this product as EnFuzionSP, except when it is necessary to highlight the difference between the Workstation Edition and the Server Edition software. EnFuzion refers to the underlying parallel computing technology. EnFuzionSP Desktop refers to the primary user interface of EnFuzionSP. An EnFuzionSP Plug-in refers to a specific plug-in for EnFuzionSP that enables a specific type of simulation. For example, the EnFuzionSP Dynamics Plug-in enables the use of EnFuzionSP for dynamics simulations. This guide is organized as follows: Chapter 1 - Introduction This chapter introduces how this guide is organized. Chapter 2 - EnFuzionSP Workstation Edition Overview This chapter provides a brief overview of the EnFuzionSP software, and how it shortens PSS E simulation time, and increases user productivity. Chapter 3 - Installing EnFuzionSP Workstation Edition This chapter describes how to install the EnFuzionSP software. Chapter 4 - Software License Activation This chapter describes how to apply and activate a license for the EnFuzionSP software. Chapter 5 - Upgrading a Previous Installation of EnFuzionSP Software This chapter describes how to upgrade an existing installation of the EnFuzionSP software. 1

5 Chapter 2 2 EnFuzionSP Workstation Edition Software Overview This chapter provides a brief overview of the EnFuzionSP Workstation Edition software, how it shortens PSS E simulation time, and increases user productivity. 2.1 What is EnFuzionSP Workstation Edition software? The EnFuzionSP software is a parallel computing software environment that lets you shorten simulation time and increase user productivity. EnFuzionSP can be used on a single workstation or on a multi-server compute cluster. The EnFuzionSP Workstation Edition software is intended for a single user to use on his or her laptop or workstation. If your computing environment includes dedicated servers as well, please also consult the EnFuzionSP Server Edition Software user documentation. By default, PSS E simulations run sequentially on one processor core of one single computer. While it is possible to start more instances of PSS E manually through batch programming, it is challenging to fully utilize all the computing resources optimally, and to fully automate the simulate-visualize-analyze-report workflow. EnFuzionSP shortens simulation time by parallelizing PSS E simulations on all the cores of all the computers you have on your compute cluster. Users can typically expect an approximately linear increase in simulation performance proportionate to the number of processor cores they have. Many PSS E users depend on the PSS E scripting interface to automate parts of their workflow. This method is effective, but it lacks fine-grained execution control for individual simulations within a batch job. When machines slow or crash, or when network performance fluctuates, faults in the computing environment can cause batch jobs to fail. When a whole batch job has to be restarted mid execution, users lose valuable time. EnFuzionSP takes the complexity out of managing jobs, machines, cores, results, faults, and reporting, giving user a submit-and-forget interface to manage a large number of simulations with ease. EnFuzionSP helps you get more results faster and easier. EnFuzionSP is an adaptation of EnFuzion for use with PSS E. 2.2 What is EnFuzionSP Desktop software? The EnFuzionSP Desktop is the primary user interface for EnFuzionSP. It is a desktop application that provides a graphical user interface for dispatching PSS E simulations, managing their execution, managing computing resources and retrieving results. Under the hood, EnFuzionSP drives PSS E and the EnFuzion job scheduler to manage distributed parallel processing of PSS E simulations. 2

6 2.3 What is an EnFuzionSP Plug-in? The EnFuzionSP plug-ins offer customized, simulation-specific support for working with different types of simulation using EnFuzionSP. For example, the Dynamics Plug-in integrates PSS E Transient Stability Module with EnFuzionSP, making it easy to run and manage dynamics simulation in parallel. 2.4 What versions of PSS E does EnFuzionSP support? EnFuzionSP supports PSS E versions 34, 33 and 32. If you are using a different version of PSS E, please contact support@axceleon.com for support. 3

7 Chapter 3 3 Installing EnFuzionSP Workstation Edition Software This chapter describes how to install the EnFuzionSP Workstation Edition software on a workstation. 3.1 User Rights Please note the following user accounts and user rights before installing and running EnFuzionSP: EnFuzionSP must be installed with administrative privilege; after installation, you do not need administrative rights to run the software. EnFuzionSP must be installed using the same user account that runs PSS E 3.2 Installing EnFuzionSP Workstation Editions Software Follow these steps to install EnFuzionSP: Login as the same user who runs PSS E on the computer, Download the EnFuzionSP software from the Axceleon, Extract the software installer before running the setup program, Right click on the setup program and choose the Run as administrator option to open the EnFuzionSP Setup Wizard, and Follow the steps in the EnFuzionSP Setup Wizard to install the software Installation Location and Directory Names When prompted by the installer to provide an installation directory, please consider the following important notices. IMPORTANT: The EnFuzionSP installation directory is designed to contain both program file and system log files. Please do not install EnFuzionSP into a location where data files cannot be written to. For this reason, please make sure that you do not install EnFuzionSP into the Windows Program Files or Program Files x86 directories. IMPORTANT: EnFuzionSP software does not support the space or special characters in the path names, including the $ character in the path name. Please make sure that you install EnFuzionSP at a location that does not have spaces or special characters in the path name. 4

8 3.3 Installing Wibu CodeMeter Software The EnFuzionSP software is protected with the CodeMeter software from WIBU-SYSTEMS AG. You will need to do following in order to obtain a license for the EnFuzionSP software: Installing the Wibu CodeMeter software Request a software license from Axceleon Active the software license Please proceed to Chapter 4 - Software License Activation for instructions on how to activate your software license. 3.4 Installing Additional Python Libraries To use the integrated plotting functionalities provided by the EnFuzionSP software, you will need to install the following Python libraries to your computer: matplotlib win32-py2.7.exe python-dateutil tar.gz ez_setup.py pytz tar.gz pyparsing win32-py2.7.exe numpy win32-superpack-python2.7.exe 3.5 Software Updates The latest updates to the EnFuzionSP software are available to customers with an active support contract. Please contact support@axceleon.com to obtain software updates. 3.6 Next Steps Please proceed to Chapter 4 - Software License Activation for information on how to get a license and activate your software. 5

9 Chapter 4 4 Software License Activation The EnFuzionSP software is protected with the CodeMeter software from WIBU-SYSTEMS AG. You need to obtain a valid CodeMeter-based license before you can activate your software license. This chapter describes how to apply and activate a software license. Key topics addressed in this chapter are: Supported license types Licensing activation process Activate a trial license Activate a purchased license 4.1 Supported License Types By default we offer software-based licenses for the EnFuzionSP software. A software license is tied to a specific computer and it cannot be transferred to another computer. A dongle-based CodeMeter license requires a dongle from WIBU Systems AG, which must be purchased separately, at an additional cost. Dongle-based licenses can be obtained by special requests to Axceleon, and it may require an additional processing fee. 4.2 Licensing Activation Process Users of the EnFuzionSP Workstation Edition software will need to activate a license on each computer that runs this software Download and Install the CodeMeter Software To ensure compatibility, we recommend that you download the supported version of the follow software and documentation from the Axceleon download center: CodeMeter software: 6

10 CodeMeter Administrator Guide: Install the CodeMeter software by following the directions in the CodeMeter Administrator Guide. Make sure you can start the CodeMeter Control Center after you install the software Activating a Trial License The steps to obtain and activate a trial license are as follows. Request a trial license by contacting support@axceleon.com. Axceleon will in turn send you a License Update File (*.WibuCmRAU). Import the License Update File into the CodeMeter Control Center, and Activate your trial license. Please refer to the CodeMeter Administrator Guide for the complete instructions on how to use the CodeMeter software. After this step, you will be able to run the EnFuzionSP software Activating a Purchased License After purchasing the EnFuzionSP software, follow these steps to activate your software: Axceleon will confirm your purchase by sending you a License Information File (*.WibuCmLIF). Import the License Information File (*.WibuCmLIF) into CodeMeter Control Center, and generate an unique License Request File (*.WibuCmRAC) for your computer. your License Request File to license@axceleon.com. Axceleon will in turn send you a machine-specific License Update File (*.WibuCmRAU) for your computer. Import the License Update File into the CodeMeter Control Center, and Activate the your license. Please refer to the CodeMeter Administrator Guide for the complete instructions on how to use the CodeMeter software. After this step, you will be able to run the EnFuzionSP software. 4.3 Starting the EnFuzionSP Software There are two steps to start the EnFuzionSP software: Step 1: Start the EnFuzion Root Service Step 2: Start the EnFuzionSP Desktop To start the EnFuzion Root Service, from the Windows Start menu: Choose All ProgramsEnFuzionSP Start Root Service, if you installed EnFuzionSP with PSS E, or 7

exe For convenience, you can work with your IT team to configure your computer to start the EnFuzion Root Service automatically when you start your machine or when you log in.

11 Choose All ProgramEnFuzionSP Start Root Service, if you installed EnFuzionSP separately from PSS E. Upon success, you will see the following services running from the Windows Task Manager: o o o enfdispatcher.exe enfnodeserver.exe enfeye.exe For convenience, you can work with your IT team to configure your computer to start the EnFuzion Root Service automatically when you start your machine or when you log in. Figure 4-1: EnFuzion Root Service To start the EnFuzionSP Desktop, from the Windows Start menu: Choose All ProgramsEnFuzionSPEnFuzionSP Desktop, if you installed EnFuzionSP together with PSS E, or Choose All ProgramsEnFuzionSPEnFuzionSP Desktop, if you installed EnFuzionSP separately from PSS E. 12 4.4 Troubleshooting Installation Problems When the EnFuzion Root Service doesn t start, the most common causes are as follows: You did not install EnFuzionSP as an administrative user Invalid or expired license file Blocked TCP/IP port that EnFuzion needs Antivirus software preventing system processes from starting Check the EnFuzion Root Service Log to identify the reason. This file can be found from Window StartAll Programs EnFuzionSPUtilities. 13 Chapter 5 5 Upgrading a Previous Installation of EnFuzionSP This chapter provides key information on how to upgrade an existing installation of EnFuzionSP. Key topics addressed in this chapter are: Planning an EnFuzionSP upgrade Updating your EnFuzionSP license file Re-hosting EnFuzionSP to another computer Managing different versions of EnFuzionSP Start/stop EnFuzion services Upgrading your EnFuzionSP installation 5.1 Planning an Upgrade After you have used EnFuzionSP for a while, it is important to protect user data during an upgrade. To plan for an orderly upgrade of EnFuzionSP on your workstation, please note the following recommended steps: Back up your current EnFuzionSP installation directory even though our installer and uninstaller do not remove or overwrite user data. Stop EnFuzion services associated with your current version of EnFuzionSP. For more detail on this, please see the section below titled Start/Stop EnFuzion Services. It is NOT necessary to uninstall an older version of EnFuzionSP before updating it. When install a new version of EnFuzionSP on your workstation, we recommend that you o o Choose the upgrade option, and Install it at the same location so that your new installation will be able to find your user files at their default locations. 5.2 Upgrading your EnFuzionSP Installation On the Windows platform, the EnFuzionSP installer will prompt you to upgrade your installation of EnFuzionSP if an older release is detected on your machine. You should install the new version of EnFuzionSP at the same 10

14 location as your old version so that all of your user configurations files will be used by the new version of EnFuzionSP. The new EnFuzionSP configuration files will be created with a.new extension. You can decide when you want to upgrade to the new version of configuration files. 5.3 Updating Your License File EnFuzionSP license files are version dependent. When you upgrade your version of EnFuzionSP, you may need to obtain a new license file. Please contact support@axceleon.com to purchase a new version of the software and apply for a new license file, or apply for an updated license if you have an active support contract for your software. 5.4 Re-hosting EnFuzionSP to Another Computer Your EnFuzionSP license is by default a node-locked, software license, and therefore cannot be transferred to another computer. To re-host your license to another computer requires a special request to Axceleon at support@axceleon.com. There may be a service charge to re-host a license. 5.5 Managing Different Versions of EnFuzionSP You should not mix EnFuzion services from different versions. Before installing and running a new version of EnFuzionSP on your workstation, you should stop EnFuzion services on all the machines that ran an older version of the software. Once you have successfully upgraded your installation, you can then start the EnFuzion services associated with the new version of the software. 5.6 Start/Stop EnFuzion Services On the Windows platform, the EnFuzion Root Service consists of two processes, enfdispatcher.exe and enfeye.exe. To manually start or stop EnFuzion services on the Windows platform, follow the steps below: EnFuzion Services (Windows) Start Service Stop Service EnFuzion Root Service: enfdispatcher.exe enfeye.bin.exe Start All Programs EnFuzionSP Control Root Utilities Register EnFuzion Root Service Start All Programs EnFuzionSP Control Root Utilities Start EnFuzion Root Service Start All Programs EnFuzionSP Control Root Utilities Stop EnFuzion Root Service 5.7 Additional Information Table 5-1: Start/Stop EnFuzion on Windows platform For addition information on EnFuzionSP, please refer to the EnFuzionSP User Guide.
