5 About This Manual This manual explains how to install Informix Dynamic Server with Advanced Decision Support Option on computers that run Windows NT. It also provides installation troubleshooting advice. Keep this installation guide with your Informix software documentation for easy reference. In this manual, all references to Dynamic Server with AD Option or the database server refer to Informix Dynamic Server with Advanced Decision Support Option. Types of Users This manual is for users who install Informix database server products. This manual assumes that you are familiar with the operating procedures of your computer and with Windows NT. On-Line Help Informix provides on-line help that displays information about most installation screens and the functions that they perform. Click the Help button to see on-line help. Documentation Notes and Release Notes Your database server installation includes on-line release notes and documentation notes that supplement the information in this and other manuals. Read the release notes as part of the installation process. These files contain vital information about application and performance issues, some of which refers specifically to Windows NT. After you complete the installation procedure that this manual describes, you will find the release notes in the file %INFORMIXDIR%\etc\relnotes.txt. 6 Prepare for Installation Prepare for Installation Item Documentation Notes Release Notes Description This item includes additions or corrections to manuals, together with information about features that might not be covered in the manuals or that have been modified since publication. This item describes feature differences from earlier versions of Informix products and how these differences might affect current products. This file also contains information about any known problems and their workarounds. You can install Informix products only as licensed by Informix. You must not transfer software from one computer to another or to another portion of your network without reregistration and the written consent of Informix. This guide assumes that you are familiar with the operating procedures of your computer and with Windows NT. For information about your file system and windowing environment, refer to your Windows NT documentation. If you encounter difficulties when you install these products, refer to Troubleshooting on page 10. Your Informix database server materials package contains a serial-number key card and a CD-ROM. To install the database server, run setup.exe from the CD. The installation program installs a service that controls the database server. It creates a user account called informix and an administrative group called Informix-Admin. The installation program automatically assigns the informix user account to the Informix-Admin group, both locally and in the user s domain, and to the Windows NT administrative groups, both locally and in the domain. 2 Installation Guide for Informix Dynamic Server with AD Option on Windows NT

7 Installation Requirements Installation Requirements To install the database server for domain access, you must be a member of both of the following groups: The local group Administrators The domain group Administrators Important: The user must be explicitly listed as a member of the local group Administrators. To be a member of the group Domain Admins and for Domain Admins to be a member of Administrators is not sufficient. You can install the database server locally if you are a member of only the local group Administrators, but you will have inter-computer accessibility if you install the database server as a member of the domain group Administrators. Before you install the database server, verify that your computer meets these minimum requirements: Pentium processor or higher (200 megahertz recommended) VGA monitor Windows NT, Version 4.0 or later (Windows NT Service Pack 3 required) TCP/IP At least 64 megabytes of RAM and swap file Destination drive with a Windows NT file system (NTFS) 200 megabytes of disk space, including a minimum of 20 megabytes for storage spaces (dbspaces) Your Informix database server materials package contains a serial-number key card and a CD-ROM. The serial-number key card contains information that you need for the installation. Order of Installation If you install more than one of the following Informix products on the same computer, you must install them in the following order: 1. Client SDK. 8 Preinstallation Considerations 2. Database server. Install Dynamic Server with AD Option. 3. IECC. Install Informix Enterprise Command Center (IECC) after you install Dynamic Server with AD Option. For instructions on how to install IECC and configure the database server, see the Informix Enterprise Command Center Installation Guide. IECC is a graphical user interface-based system management tool provided with Dynamic Server with AD Option. IECC is required to configure Dynamic Server with AD Option on Windows NT. Important: If you install the previous Informix products on different computers, then the database server must still be installed before IECC, but the Client SDK does not have to be installed in any particular order. Complete all installation steps for one product before you install the next one. Important: Dynamic Server with AD Option cannot be configured from a commandline interface in Windows NT. After you install and configure Dynamic Server with AD Option, you can manage it with IECC or a command-line interface that is available in a Windows NT command shell. For instructions on how to manage Dynamic Server with AD Option with IECC, see the Informix Enterprise Command Center Installation Guide. For instructions on how to manage Dynamic Server with AD Option with a command-line interface, see your Administrator s Guide. Preinstallation Considerations Before you install the database server, you must address the following considerations: Check that you are a member of the domain group Administrators and the local group Administrators. To find out the domain name, press Ctrl-Alt-Delete and read the Logon Information in the Windows NT Security dialog box. Then look at the Start menu Programs Administrative Tools program list. Choose User Manager or User Manager for Domain, whichever appears. If only User Manager appears, then you are not a member of the domain group Administrators. In the User Manager for Domain dialog box, verify that your login name is included as a member of the domain group Administrators. In the User Manager dialog box, verify that you are a member of the local group Administrators for local database server installation. 4 Installation Guide for Informix Dynamic Server with AD Option on Windows NT

9 Preinstallation Considerations Decide whether you want to install the database server for domain access or local access only. If you are logged in as a user with domain group Administrators privileges when you install the database server, users of other computers in the domain can be granted access to the database server. If you are logged in as a user with only local Administrators privileges, then only a user of the local computer can access the database server. Administrators Group Membership To install Dynamic Server with AD Option for access from other computers in the domain, you must be a member of the Windows NT domain group Administrators as well as a member of the local group Administrators for the computer where you run the install program. To install Dynamic Server with AD Option on a single Windows NT computer, you need only be a member of the local group Administrators. You can add members to the group Administrators with the User Manager in the Administrative Tools folder. Context-sensitive, on-line help provides detailed instructions on how to create groups and add users to groups. The SQLHOSTS and Registry Data The SQLHOSTS key in the registry database contains the configuration information. The registry database also contains additional configuration information as well as a list of all users whom the system has registered to use the Informix database. Domain Installation To install the database server for use by other computers in the domain, log in as a user with domain group Administrators privileges to the computer where you intend to run the installation program. You must be a member of both the domain group Administrators group and the local group Administrators on the computer. Installation Guide for Informix Dynamic Server with AD Option on Windows NT 5

10 Install the Database Server Users on other Windows NT computers that belong to the same domain or to a trusted domain can access the database server. You can use the Windows NT domain controller or another system in the domain to manage the user account information for all domain members. To install Dynamic Server with AD Option on a domain, you must log in to that domain before you run the installation program. If you are logged in to a domain and you have user privileges but not administrative privileges, you will receive an error when you run the installation program. For an explanation of this action, see Troubleshooting on page 10. For more information on domains and the domain controller, refer to your Windows NT documentation. Local Installation You can also install the database server on the local computer for local access only. You must be a member of the local group Administrators to install the database server. If you choose to install the database server locally and later want to allow client computers to access the database server, you must create a hosts.equiv file in the %SystemRoot%\System32\drivers\etc folder to specify trusted Dynamic Server with AD Option clients who can connect from remote computers. For more information about creating this file, see your Administrator s Guide. Install the Database Server This section describes how to install Dynamic Server with AD Option. It provides a quick overview of the installation procedure and lists steps that correspond to the installation wizard screens. It also includes additional information about the installation procedure. The installation program creates a user account called informix and an administrative group called Informix-Admin. 11 Download the Software Download the Software You can install the database server from the Windows NT Task Bar or from Windows NT Explorer. To stop the installation at any time, click Cancel. If you stop the installation, the installation program removes any files or information that it might have already installed. Important: These installation instructions assume that you install the program from the D drive. If you install the program from another drive, substitute the appropriate drive in the installation instructions. To begin the installation from the Task Bar 1. Insert the CD-ROM in drive D. 2. To open the Run dialog box, choose Start Run from the Task Bar. 3. Type D:\setup.exe in the Command Line text box. 4. Click OK. To begin the installation from Windows NT Explorer 1. Insert the CD-ROM into drive D. 2. In Explorer, double-click drive D. 3. Double-click setup.exe. The installation wizard guides you through each installation step with instructions and includes the following features: Most wizard screens contain a Next button that advances to the following page and a Back button that returns to the previous page. In each wizard screen, press TAB to move the cursor forward from one text box to the next and press SHIFT-TAB to move the cursor to the previous text box. Many wizard screens contain a Help button. If you would like more information about the purpose of the screen, click Help. To abort the process at any time, remove any installed files, and return to Windows NT, click Cancel. 12 Download the Software The installation program checks the information that you enter and displays an error message if the information is not valid. If an error occurs, refer to Troubleshooting on page 10. To install the software 1. The first wizard screen welcomes you to the installation process. It is a good idea to close all running programs before you start the actual installation. To close programs without exiting from the installation program, press ALT-TAB to cycle through running programs and then close them. Click Next when you are ready to begin installing the database server software. 2. Choose whether to read the release notes. The release notes might help you in your installation decisions. If you choose to read the release notes, they appear in a Notepad window. When you exit from Notepad, you return to the installation program. 3. Enter the serial number and key included with your CD-ROM. The serial number and key are case-sensitive. 4. Choose a folder for the database server software. The default folder is \informix on your first NTFS drive. If D is your first NTFS drive, then the default folder is D:\informix. Click Browse if you want to specify a different folder. The software must be installed on an NTFS drive, however. If the database server has been installed previously into a different folder, the install program tries to install the program in that folder. To change the folder, click Browse and specify a different folder. 5. Specify the dbspaces folder. The dbspace folder is the location for the root dbspace of your database server. This folder contains the database files: tables, indexes, system catalogs tables, and so on. The default dbspace folder is \ifmxdata on your first NTFS drive. If your first NTFS drive is D, then the folder is D:\ifmxdata. Click Browse to specify a different folder. 13 Install IECC 6. Specify a password for the informix user account. Enter an informix user password in the Password text boxes. The default password is Informix. Passwords cannot exceed 14 characters and can only contain letters a through z, A through Z, numbers, and underscores. Passwords are case-sensitive. 7. Note the name of the computer where the SQLHOSTS and registry data is stored. The SQLHOSTS and registry data is stored on the local computer. 8. Copy the files. When you click Next to start copying the files, a progress message box appears. To stop copying files and stop the installation, click the Cancel button. If you cancel installation, all registry entries made by the installation program are removed and all copied files are deleted. 9. Preconfigure the files. The installation program sets up the copied files on your computer. For each step in the process, a message box appears. Some steps take longer than others. You cannot cancel installation during this step. If error messages appear during these steps, see Troubleshooting on page Choose to reboot the computer now or later. You cannot use the database server software until you reboot the computer. Install IECC After you install the database server software and reboot the computer, follow the instructions in the Informix Enterprise Command Center Installation Guide to install IECC. After you install IECC, you can use it to configure the database server, start and stop the database server, and monitor its use. 14 Troubleshooting Troubleshooting This section presents common installation error messages and warnings and solutions. If you continue to encounter problems, contact Informix Technical Support. In North America, call toll-free (800) or send a facsimile to (913) Outside North America, contact your distributor or the nearest Informix subsidiary. System Problems That You Can Correct Problem. A warning that the user is not a domain administrator appears. Solution. If you are not a member of the domain group Administrators, the installation program will allow the installation to proceed and install the database server for local use. If you are a member of the domain group Administrators, you can make the database server usable by programs on other computers in the domain. For more information, refer to Preinstallation Considerations on page 4. Problem. A warning that you have insufficient RAM appears. Solution. Your system must have at least 64 megabytes of RAM. Add the necessary RAM to your system. Problem. A warning that you have a slow microprocessor appears. Solution. The Installer requires a Pentium that runs at 200 megahertz or faster. If your microprocessor is slow, the Installer program requires more time to install the database server fully. Your database server will also run more slowly than if you have the recommended Pentium configuration. Problem. A warning appears that tells you that your system has insufficient disk space. Solution. You must have at least 200 megabytes of disk space. Locate a drive that has the required amount of free disk space to run the database server. 10 Installation Guide for Informix Dynamic Server with AD Option on Windows NT

15 Troubleshooting Problem. A warning indicates that you should update service packs for the Windows NT operating system on your computer. Solution. Update your system to Windows NT Service Pack 3. Problem. A warning appears that tells you that Microsoft SNMP is not installed. Solution. Microsoft SNMP must be installed before installing Dynamic Server with AD Option. Add the Microsoft SNMP product using the Windows NT Installation disk before attempting to reinstall Dynamic Server with AD Option. After installing Microsoft SNMP, you must re-install the Windows NT Service Pack 3. Key and Password Problems Problem. You enter the key and see the following message: You have entered an invalid key. Please re-enter the key; if that is unsuccessful, contact your Informix sales representative. Solution. Try to reenter the key number. Remember that keys are case sensitive. Problem. A message indicates that you have entered an incorrect password. Solution. Enter the password again. Remember that keys are case sensitive. If you are still unsuccessful, contact your Informix sales representative. Problem. A warning indicates that the passwords do not match. Solution. If you decide to change the default password for the Informix user account, two fields appear. You must type the same password in each field to confirm the password. If you do not type identical passwords, the warning appears. Reenter the password and the confirmation. Installation Guide for Informix Dynamic Server with AD Option on Windows NT 11

16 Troubleshooting Database Server Startup Problems Problem. The database server will not start after you reinstall the software. Solution. If you change the user informix password after initial installation or when you reinstall the database server software, you must change the password for each Informix service manually. Open the Services applet in the Control Panel, select each of the eight Informix services and change the password for each one. User Account Problems Problem. You try to add user accounts to the Backup Domain Controller. This problem might occur when you try to install the database server on the Backup Domain Controller. The following message appears: Before you proceed... An error has been detected while adding user accounts on your domain. User accounts created on the Backup Domain Controller sometimes take several minutes to propagate to the Primary Domain Controller. This error may disappear after a few minutes. Wait for a few minutes, then press the Back button to retry the operation which failed. Alternatively, you may resynchronize the BDC with the PDC from within the Server Manager program on the BDC. Solution. The Informix database server installation program creates user accounts on the primary Domain Controller for the NT domain. If you try to install the user accounts on the Backup Domain Controller, Windows NT tries to write that information to the Primary Domain. This process might take several minutes. If you receive an error, wait a few minutes. Click the Back button to retry the operation or synchronize the two controllers from the Windows NT Server Manager program on the Backup Domain Controller. 12 Installation Guide for Informix Dynamic Server with AD Option on Windows NT

17 Troubleshooting Fatal Problems Fatal problems usually result from trying to install the database server on an incorrectly configured computer. For information on how to correctly configure your computer and how to register administrators properly, refer to the section Prepare for Installation that begins on page 2.
