3 Individual Teachers Log on Your individual log on username and password will be supplied to you by the National Centre for Technology in Education once you have registered with them. Check out for a registration form. Open your web browser by double clicking on it in the usual way. A page very similar to this will be displayed; depending on your browser type e.g. Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox or Netscape. Type in the following URl: into the address bar (red box above) at the top of the page and press the enter key and this page will appear. The Geography Support Service 2008 Page 3 of 25

4 On the top left of the page you will notice the username and password log in area as shown below. Type in your assigned personal username and password into the appropriate boxes and double click on Log In (red circle below). geography As the new page loads and the following message will appear. 5 This page will now appear please read it carefully and if you agree accept the terms and conditions left click on the appropriate button. Functionality Maximising the map window Once you log on successfully your screen should now resemble the one below. Map Window The Geography Support Service 2008 Page 5 of 25

6 These small blue arrows increase or reduce the size of the windows which are displayed on the screen. Click on the left-pointing arrow and the window in which maps are displayed will be maximised. Clicking on the right-pointing arrow minimises the map window. The arrows are small so it may be useful to practice maximising and minimising the map window. Zooming Zooming in enlarges a map so that more detail is visible. There are 3 methods of zooming in. Zooming in, Method 1 To zoom in on an area place the cursor to the north west of it. Right click and hold the mouse button down while dragging the cursor diagonally. An orange rectangle appears on the map showing the area you selected to be enlarged as shown on the map above. When you release the mouse button, the selected area is enlarged to fill the map window. The Geography Support Service 2008 Page 6 of 25

7 To zoom out click on the undo button. Zooming Method 2 Place the cursor on the map and double left click. The programme zooms in and the map is enlarged. Keep double left clicking until you have the degree of enlargement and the detail you require. Zooming in Method 3 Method 3 involves using the zoom icons which are on the top left of the screen. Click on the button to zoom in. Click on the button to zoom out. Zooming in Method 4 Method 4 involves rolling the mouse wheel forward to zoom in and backwards to zoom out. The degree of zoom will depend on the sensitivity of the mouse. Reset the Map To return to the original map left click on the Reset icon in the top left corner of the map window. 8 Panning Panning allows you to move north, south, east or west across a map. Left click on the map, hold the button down and drag the map in the desired direction. Panning and zooming allow you to examine any part of a map or photograph at a variety of scales. Activity 1 Using the zoom and panning tools on the 1:50,000 map do the following: Find the school where you teach. Find the locations you use for fieldwork. Find local examples of physical features. Activating different maps and photographs. Left click on the bar, hold mouse button down and slide the bar to B on the right. This changes the display in the map from the 1:50,000 map to the Ortho (Aerial) Photograph. Activity 2 Repeat Activity 1 using the Ortho Photographs. The Geography Support Service 2008 Page 8 of 25

9 Mirrored Images and Stitching Maps at different scales and aerial photographs can be placed side by side to give a mirrored image. Zoom in to your desired area by right clicking on the mouse and dragging. Wait until the resolution is clear. Continue this process until you are in the desired area as below. 10 Mirrored Images Click on the mirrored icon on the left side of the interface This will split the screen into two windows as below. One can move the maps in any direction by clicking and dragging or by using the Panning Tool and both images will change simultaneously. Panning Tool The Geography Support Service 2008 Page 10 of 25

11 Stitching Images A similar process can be followed by using the stitching icon which is on the left side of the map window. This also will give maps side by side except this time the map/photograph on either side will be a continuation of the same area in two different formats. As one moves the maps in any direction both will change simultaneously. The Geography Support Service 2008 Page 11 of 25

12 Layers You can return to one image on the screen by clicking on layer icon on the left side of the map window. Changing visible Layers To return to the original map left click on the Reset icon in the top left corner of the map window. Left click on Explore > Map Explorer as demonstrated in the picture. 13 Map Explorer A new window will appear on the left of the screen. This window contains a selection of maps, photographs and mapped data which can be activated in the map window. For example, to activate the Tele Atlas Map left click on it and while holding down the button drag it over the map window and then release it. Please allow time for the map window to refresh. To return to the 1:50,000 map scroll down through the Map Explorer to find it and then drag and drop it as above. The Geography Support Service 2008 Page 13 of 25

14 Search Type in a location name in the search line e.g. Nephin. Left click on Search or press the Enter key. The search result/results will appear in the left hand window. Zoom in to the view required. Print To print a map or photograph zoom to the desired scale and left click on the Print button in the top right corner of the map window. The printing will vary depending on your type of default printer. The Geography Support Service 2008 Page 14 of 25

15 Sharing Resources in Scoilnet Maps A note on copyright Scoilnet Maps allows you to add and store photos, documents, weblinks, video clips, etc on the system. These resources can be viewed by you only (private) or by all other users (public). It is important, however, that you only add resources that are yours to add. In other words, you must be the creator of the work. In the case of a photograph, this would mean that you should have taken the image or be the copyright owner of the image. Adding something that s not yours may be infringing on another person s copyright. There are countless benefits to adding and sharing resources on Scoilnet Maps. You can "georeference" resources if you wish, ie, add them to a particular spot on a map, thereby creating additional learning opportunities for students above and beyond looking at maps. You can also work with and adapt another user s resource and you can see who has worked with or used your resources. In sharing resources, you will always be credited as the original creator of the resource. Moreover, users are not permitted to use any resource in a commercial context, so no one will make money from anything you share on Scoilnet Maps. It s simply not allowed. 24 Once you have located the web page it is advisable to put it into the favourites page for easy access. The web site has relevant information for all Leaving Cert. Geography teachers. A copy of the Syllabus and The Teaching Guideline are available in pdf. form. All in-service presentations will be available. Some of these are already available and these can be accessed by clicking on any of the links under the in-service headline. The investigation topics for the present year are also available here.
