Overview The Thermo Scientific Dionex SRD-10 Suppressor Regenerant Detector (P/N ) is a stand-alone device that monitors liquid flow to a suppressor and signals when to replenish the regenerant or external water supply. If the flow is restricted or stops, the Dionex SRD-10 automatically disables the eluent pump. The Dionex SRD-10 is intended for use with these applications: A Thermo Scientific Dionex SRS 300 Self-Regenerating Suppressor that is operated in the external water mode A Thermo Scientific Dionex MMS 300 MicroMembrane Suppressor that is operated in the chemical regenerant mode In the external water mode of operation, an external water supply is pumped into the Dionex SRS regenerant channels. A constant current is applied across the electrodes in the Dionex SRS to electrolytically regenerate the device. It is possible for the IC (ion chromatography) system to continue to operate and for current to be applied to the Dionex SRS even after external water flow has stopped and the water supply is depleted. Unless the current is turned off, this will quickly cause irreversible damage to the Dionex SRS. In the chemical regenerant mode of operation, running out of regenerant will not damage the MMS, but it will adversely affect the chromatographic run. Doc /12 1

4 TTL Control In order to control the eluent pump, the Dionex SRD-10 must be connected to a TTL input on one of the following Thermo Scientific products: Integrated IC Systems Dionex ICS-1100, ICS-1600, or ICS Ion Chromatography System Dionex ICS-1000, ICS-1500, or ICS Ion Chromatography System Pump Modules Dionex ICS-3000 Dual Pump (DP), ICS Single Pump (SP), ICS-5000 Dual Pump (DP)*, or ICS-5000 Single Pump (SP)* Dionex GP50 Gradient Pump, GS50 Gradient Pump, IP25 Isocratic Pump, or IS25 Isocratic Pump (part of the Dionex DX-600 and ICS-2500 product lines) * Analytical pump only Power Requirements The Dionex SRD-10 can be powered from any USB port in the IC system, including one on the PC on which the Chromeleon 7 or Chromeleon 6.8 Chromatography Data System software is installed. If a USB port is not available, an external 5V USB power supply is required. The external power supply is not provided with the Dionex SRD-10, but is readily available elsewhere. 5 2. Installation Select the Dionex SRD-10 Installation Site The Dionex SRD-10 must be installed within 50.8 cm (20 in) of the suppressor, due to the length of the Dionex SRD-10 inlet tubing. It can be installed so as to allow the regenerant or external water supply to exit the suppressor and flow through the Dionex SRD-10 to waste. Use the Velcro strips on the rear of the Dionex SRD-10 to mount it on the laboratory bench, the side of the IC system, or other flat surface. Any orientation is acceptable. Install the Dionex SRD Turn off the power to the IC system (including the pump, detector, autosampler, and chromatography compartment). 2. Connect the Dionex SRD-10 inlet tubing (labeled TO SRS/AES, REGEN OUT) (see Figure 1, View A) to the REGEN OUT port on the suppressor. 6 3. Place the free end of the Dionex SRD-10 WASTE line (see Figure 1, View A) in a waste container below the level of the workbench on which the IC system is installed. 4. Remove the backing from the three Velcro strips on the Dionex SRD-10 (see Figure 1, View B). 5. While holding the Dionex SRD-10 in the preferred orientation, press it firmly onto the mounting surface. 6. Refer to the table below to identify the TTL input that provides on/off control of the pump motor. Locate the appropriate connector plug in the Dionex SRD-10 Ship Kit. Follow these basic steps to connect the TTL: a. Connect the active wire (red) and ground wire (black) from the Dionex SRD-10 to the connector plug. To attach a wire to the plug, strip the end of the wire (if it is not already stripped), insert it into the plug, and use a screwdriver to tighten the locking screw. If necessary, multiple ground wires can be attached to a single TTL input/output ground pin. When attaching wires to the connector plug, be careful not to allow stray strands of wire to short to the adjoining position on the connector. b. Plug the Dionex SRD-10 connector plug into the connector on the rear panel of the integrated IC system or the pump module. 4 Doc /12

7 c. Connect the wires from the Dionex SRD-10 connector plug to the TTL connector pins on the other device. NOTE Check the polarity of the connection. Connect the signal wire to the signal (+) pin and the ground wire to the ground (-) pin. 8. Plug the USB cable from the Dionex SRD-10 into any available USB port on the IC system (or the optional external USB power supply). 9. Turn on the power to the IC system. 3. Chromeleon Setup Before beginning operation of the Dionex SRD-10, you must verify that a pump TTL input is configured in Chromeleon to control the eluent pump. In addition, you may need to update the pump firmware. The following table indicates the setup requirements for each pump. If you are running Chromeleon 7, refer to Section 3.1. If you are running Chromeleon 6.8, refer to Section 3.2. Doc /12 5

8 3.1 Chromeleon 7: Pump Setup Start the Instrument Configuration Program 1. Stop all batches, programs, and data acquisition events on the Chromeleon Controller that hosts the pump to be updated. 2. If it is not already running, start the Instrument Controller Service. (Click Start > All Programs > Chromeleon 7 > Services Manager, and then click Start Instrument Controller.) The Chromeleon Services Manager status message should read Instrument Controller Service is running idle. 3. Start the Instrument Configuration program. (Click Start > All Programs > Chromeleon 7 > Instrument Configuration Manager.) 4. If necessary, click the plus sign beside the controller name to display the items underneath. 5. Expand the contents of the instrument that includes the pump to be updated. (Click the plus sign next to the instrument.) 6. Right-click the pump to be updated and click Properties. The Properties dialog box for the pump appears. In this example, the pump is a Dionex ICS-3000 DP. 6 Doc /12

9 If the pump is a Dionex ICS-3000 DP or ICS-3000 SP, go to the next section to update the firmware. If the pump is not a Dionex ICS-3000 DP or ICS-3000 SP, go to page 8 to configure the pump TTLs. Download the New Dionex ICS-3000 DP/SP Firmware 1. On the General tab page in the Properties dialog box, click Install Firmware. A message notifies you of the firmware version that is currently installed in the pump and the version that will be downloaded from the data system. If firmware version (or later) is already installed, click No to cancel the download. Go directly to the next section to configure the pump TTL inputs. 2. If the installed firmware version is earlier than version 4.1.0: a. Click No to cancel the download. Doc /12 7

10 b. Insert the Dionex ICS-3000 Dual Pump/ICS-3000 Single Pump Firmware CD into the appropriate drive. c. Copy the pump firmware file from the CD to the \Bin directory of your Chromeleon installation. 3. Click Install Firmware again. When the notification of the installed firmware version appears, click Yes to update the firmware. 4. The download can take several seconds. When the download is complete, remove the firmware CD from the drive. Store the CD in a safe place, away from heat and moisture. Configure the Pump TTLs 1. Click the Inputs tab in the pump Properties dialog box. Verify that the correct TTL is selected. For a Dionex ICS-3000 DP or ICS-5000 DP: If the Dionex SRD-10 is connected to Pump 1 and TTL 2, do not select the Pump_TTL_2 check box. If the Dionex SRD-10 is connected to Pump 2 and TTL 3, do not select the Pump_TTL_3 check box. 8 Doc /12

11 2. Click OK. 3. Exit the Instrument Configuration program. When asked whether to save the configuration changes, click Save. This completes the pump setup. Go on to Section Chromeleon 6.8: Pump Setup Start the Server Configuration Program 1. Stop all batches, programs, and data acquisition events on the Chromeleon Server that hosts the pump to be updated. 2. If it is not already running, start the Chromeleon Server Monitor program. (Click Start > All Programs > Chromeleon > Server Monitor.) The Server Monitor status message should read Chromeleon Server is running idle. 3. Start the Chromeleon Server Configuration program. (Click Start > All Programs > Chromeleon > Server Configuration.) 4. If necessary, click the plus sign beside the server name to display the items underneath. 5. Expand the contents of the timebase that includes the pump to be updated by clicking the plus sign next to the timebase. 6. In the Server Configuration program, right-click the pump to be updated and click Properties. The Properties dialog box for the pump appears. In this example, the pump is a Dionex ICS-3000 DP. 12 If the pump is a Dionex ICS-3000 DP or ICS-3000 SP, go to the next section to update the firmware. If the pump is not a Dionex ICS-3000 DP or ICS-3000 SP, go to page 11 to configure the pump TTLs. Download the New Dionex ICS-3000 DP/SP Firmware 1. On the General tab page in the Properties dialog box, click Install Firmware. A message notifies you of the firmware version that is currently installed in the pump and the version that will be downloaded from the data system. If firmware version (or later) is already installed, click No to cancel the download and go directly to the next section to configure the pump TTL inputs. 2. Click the Inputs tab in the pump Properties dialog box. Verify that the correct TTL is selected. For a Dionex ICS-3000 DP or ICS-5000 DP: If the Dionex SRD-10 is connected to Pump 1 and TTL 2, do not select the Pump_TTL_2 check box. If the Dionex SRD-10 is connected to Pump 2 and TTL 3, do not select the Pump_TTL_3 check box. Doc /12 11

14 2. Click OK. 3. Exit the Server Configuration program. When asked whether to save the configuration changes, click Save. This completes the pump setup. Go on to Section Routine Operation Before starting an analysis, wait about 10 seconds to allow the Dionex SRD-10 to automatically switch to operating mode. If any problems occur during operation, refer to Section 5 for troubleshooting guidance. For detailed Dionex SRD-10 operating instructions, refer to the Dionex SRS or Dionex MMS product manual. The manuals are included on the Thermo Scientific Reference Library DVD (P/N ). 5. Troubleshooting Dionex SRD-10 sends TTL output signal to turn off pump, although reservoir is not empty Check that the end of the line is submerged in the liquid in the reservoir. Check for leaks in the lines from the reservoir to the Dionex SRD-10. Dionex SRD-10 does not respond, even when reservoir is empty Check the TTL connection to be sure that the polarity is correct: Disconnect the connector and wires and reconnect them. Be sure to connect the signal wire to the signal (+) pin and the ground wire to the ground (-) pin. If the problem persists, contact Technical Support for Dionex products.
