8 Basic configuration Basic configuration The basic components of system solutions based on VarioPrint 5000 consist of # Basic system Function unit Printing system VarioPrint 5000 ScanStation DS 10 with scanning software Océ CopyMaker or Océ DocSetter PRISMAproduction any optional add-ons for the various components The individual modules are connected via TCP/IP, 100 Mbit / 1 Gbit Ethernet, 420 ft (140m). All the following examples of use are based on this basic configuration unless otherwise stated. The following graphic illustrates how the individual components interact with each other: 8 Chapter 1 - System Overview - System Components and Functionalities

9 Basic configuration Exception VP 5000 Advanced VarioPrint 5000 Advanced is a variation of the VP 5000 with an integrated PRISMA spooling system. The integrated PRISMA system is not optimized for creating print jobs. The system is instead optimized for printing out pre-generated print files from PCL and PostScript data streams. It can theoretically be used in connection with a separate PRISMA server, but this is not cost-effective in most cases. Simplifications however result if Vario- Print 5000 Advanced is used in connection with Océ CopyMaker and Océ DocSetter. These software modules communicate directly with the PRISMA integrated into the printer. Therefore no additional server is required. 12 Océ VarioPrint 5000 Océ VarioPrint 5000 The Océ VarioPrint 5000 systems consist of cutsheet printers with maximum print speeds of 112 or 162 ppm. The systems consist of Paper input device Print module with two print units Paper output Depending on the printer language (IPDS or PCL), print resolutions of 240/300/600 dpi are possible. In the examples with PRISMAproduction described below, the printer is mainly operated in IPDS mode. Optionally, you can connect: Stitcher High capacity stacker (up to two units possible) Cascade for additional paper input Booklet Maker Interposer Exception VarioPrint 5000 Advanced: VarioPrint 5000 Advanced is a variation of the VP 5000 with an integrated PRISMA spooling system. The integrated PRISMA system is not optimized for creating print jobs. The system is instead optimized for printing out pre-generated print files from PCL and PostScript data streams. It can theoretically be used in connection with a separate PRISMA server, but this is not cost-effective in most cases. Simplifications however result if Vario- Print 5000 Advanced is operated in connection with Océ CopyMaker and Océ DocSetter, as in these cases no additional PRISMA server is required. See also section Basic configuration. 12 Chapter 1 - System Overview - System Components and Functionalities

13 ScanStation DS10 and scanning software ScanStation DS10 and scanning software Océ DS 10 is a TWAIN-based scanner for processing paper documents from A5 to A3, one-sided or double-sided, at a scan speed of up to 54 pages for A4 images. The resolution of the scanned TIFF images is 300 or 600 dpi. The following section discusses solutions where the DS10 is used in connection with CopyMaker or DocSetter software. Océ CopyMaker is software that makes it easy to create copies, configure scan jobs and optimize their quality, and add headers, footers, page numbering etc. to documents in connection with VP 5000 and ScanStation DS10. The Océ DocSetter software is a powerful solution for scanning documents, brochures, books etc. and reproducing them at the highest quality. This software is therefore aimed at users who often have to print out this type of document at high quality. Extensive editing functions and automatable image correction offer customers a high degree of flexibility and increase productivity. The program also supports Océ Custom- Tone. 14 PRISMAproduction Server PRISMAproduction Server PRISMAproduction Server is a powerful output management system for high-volume printing at maximum production reliability. PRISMAproduction offers an open architecture, supports all important data streams and integrates numerous IT platforms - from traditional data centers through the graphic arts industry to networked department printing. Of course several high-performance printers can be connected to a single PRISMAproduction system. On the input side, it is also possible to connect several - local or remote - scanning stations. Data that is already in digital form can be imported and printed through various converters. Besides printing out data, PRISMAproduction also allows it to be exported as TIFF, PostScript or PDF files. The software offers integration into Xerox Workflows via the Dpconnect module. The Print File Library integrated into the PoD module provides easy-to-use functions for saving and retrieving data and print jobs. In the following examples we are assuming that the user is working in so-called AIMS mode. For details please see the PRISMAproduction Server user manual. 14 Chapter 1 - System Overview - System Components and Functionalities

15 Chapter 2 Getting Started - Powering on the System

16 Powering on the system Powering on the system In contrast to, for example, earlier PRISMAproduction SCSI systems, the order in which system components connected by TCP/IP are activated is irrelevant. The function units can also be powered on simultaneously. We recommend powering on those components first that take the longest to start up, i.e. in the following order Printer and peripheral/post-processing devices connected to the printer (Stitcher, Stacker, BookletMaker...) PRISMAproduction ScanStation DS10 and scanning software 16 Chapter 2 - Getting Started - Powering on the System

79 Printing PostScript and PCL files Printing PostScript and PCL files Purpose You would like to print a PostScript or PCL file directly from PRISMAproduction and apply the attributes already defined in the data stream. Before you begin The procedure for printing out PostScript and PCL files is basically the same as that for printing out PDF and TIFF files as described in the previous section. Changes may be necessary if information about required papers etc. is already contained in the prepared print job, which may be the case with these file types. Only changes required in the case of existing attribute information are therefore described below. Required tool Printing system VarioPrint 5000 PRISMAproduction V or higher How to print PostScript/PCL files with media attributes in the data stream: 1. Perform steps 1 to 4 as described under PDF and TIFF, except for the item <Tray information>. 2. Activate the item <Permit tray information>. 81 Printing AFP files Printing AFP files Purpose You would like to print an existing AFP print file. The print file is not rastered yet, but contains all data and resources. ("Inline Resources") Before you begin The VarioPJM and the PJM are available in PRISMAproduction for defining print jobs. The VarioPJM will be the print job manager of choice for most applications in the PoD area with cutsheet printers. An exception is printing AFP files that have not been rastered yet: Here the PJM is used. For clarification purposes, here is an brief overview of these two software components: VarioPJM Optimized for applications for the graphic arts industry Focus on cutsheet printers Focus on simple operation Stacking sequence optimized for Océ printers PJM Developed over time from production printing Suitable for continuous and cutsheet printers Extensive configuration options Extensive folding schemes File merging... 83 Printing Xerox RDO files Printing Xerox RDO files Purpose You would like to print Xerox RDO files on a VarioPrint 5000 system. The files contain extensive processing information ("Page programming") on tabs, stapling etc. You would like the production of these documents to be automated in the Océ workflow just as it is in the Xerox workflow. Before you begin RDO is the proprietary data format for print jobs. RDO files contain the rastered print pages, information on the print file and device-specific information on the printer and on post-processing. With the DPconvert software module, Océ provides an easy-to-use converter for converting Xerox RDO files to an Océ DocSetter format. The ticket information is also converted so that the automated workflow is preserved. If processing steps are required in the RDO file that cannot be performed with the installed Océ printing system, this information is nonetheless retained as job ticket information (in the DocSetter print file). Required tool Printing system VarioPrint 5000 PRISMAproduction V or higher DocSetter V2.0 or higher DPconvert V1.0 or higher How to convert RDO files: 1. Open DPconvert. Chapter 6 - Additional options for printing out digital files via PRISMAproduction 83

87 Chapter 7 Troubleshooting

88 Errors and causes Errors and causes Purpose The configuration described in this handbook is very simple in principle, but very complex in detail. As a result, situations may occasionally occur in daily operation - particularly after the initial installation - with which the operator is unfamiliar. The following information therefore describes the most important sources of errors and provides help with troubleshooting. The printer is not printing 1. Open the <Printer Pool> window in PRISMAproduction and check whether the printer is activated. Activate the printer if necessary! The printer is not printing, the printer is not active and cannot be activated 1. Check whether the corresponding channel is closed, and close the channel if necessary. 2. If the channel is properly closed, check whether the printer was booted in the correct mode (printer language). Boot the printer in the correct mode if necessary. 3. If the above measures are unsuccessful, call the Key Operator. The printer is not printing, the printer is active. 1. Check whether the print job is arriving in PRISMAproduction in the "All jobs" window. 2. If this is the case, check whether the right job class was selected. If necessary, correct the job class and continue printing. 3. If the above measures are unsuccessful, call the Key Operator. The printer is not printing, the printer is active but not ready. 1. Set the printer to "Ready" at the printer operator panel. If necessary, first observe any warning messages at the operator panel and carry out the necessary measures for correcting errors. 2. If the above measures are unsuccessful, call the Key Operator. 88 Chapter 7 - Troubleshooting

89 Errors and causes The <Start?> pop-up message appears. 1. This message appears after the printer is first powered on or when it is reconfigured. 2. Confirm by clicking. The message <Please insert the required paper> appears. 1. In this case the paper definition on the printer does not match that of the print job. 2. Configure the corresponding paper tray and insert the required paper. The message <Scanner is off. Turn scanner on!> appears on the ScanStation screen. 1. Power on the scanner. The message <Machine recoverable error Internal software error -Press a key to continue!> appears. 1. Sorry! 2. Shut down the system and restart it. Chapter 7 - Troubleshooting 89
