4 This procedure explains how to install and use Synapse on your computer. The screenshots in this procedure were performed on a Windows 7 station. The example of username used in this procedure is: creferent. I. Mandatory technical specifications and configuration of Internet Explorer A. Technical Specifications If you have Windows XP, you must use version 8 Internet Explorer. If you have Windows 7 (32 or 64 bit), you must use version 9 Internet Explorer. All other version of Internet Explorer are not supported. B. Internet Explorer Settings 1. Open Internet Explorer by clicking here in the taskbar 2. 5 3. On the Security tab, Local intranet, click on Custom Level as shown here: 4. In the User Authentication section, select Automatic logon only in Intranet zone: 5. In the ActiveX controls and plug-ins section check the Enable box for the following sections: Allow scriptlets ActiveX controls marked safe for writing scripts* Initialization and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe for scripting Automatic prompting for ActiveX controls Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins Download unsigned ActiveX controls Download signed ActiveX controls christieinnomed.com Page 2 sur 17

7 7. Enter the address of the website of the radiology clinic then click the Add button as shown below and then click Close 8. In the Security tab, Trusted Sites, Custom Level configure the options in the same way as in step 5 earlier in this document: christieinnomed.com Page 4 sur 17

8 II. Connecting for the first time and changing your password This step is optional depending on whether the radiology clinic manager gave you the right to change your password at the first login. If your password is imposed, go directly to Section III further in this document. Here are the instructions to change your password for the first time: 1. Press the Windows and R keys to get the following window: 2. Type in mstsc in the run window: 3. Enter in the Remote Desktop Connection window, and click the Connection button as shown in the image below: christieinnomed.com Page 5 sur 17

9 4. The following window shows up. Enter the domain name followed by the username given by the radiology clinic without any spaces. For example, the user whose username is creferent must be entered: DMZCLARK\creferent.Then on the second line enter your temporary password given by the clinic and click on OK 5. Click Oui (Yes) in the next window: christieinnomed.com Page 6 sur 17

10 6. When this window shows up, click OK: 7. In the window below, on the second line (New password), enter the password of your choice. Warning, your password must contain at least 8 characters with a minimum of one digit and capital letter. Enter a second time your password in the 3rd line (line Confirm password). 11 8. Click on OK: 9. Close the following window by clicking the X as indicated at the end of the red arrow below: 10. Click the OK button in the following window as shown below: III. Installing Synapse 1. Open Internet Explorer by clicking here in the taskbar. 2. In the address bar, enter the name of the following site: as shown below and press the Enter key: christieinnomed.com Page 8 sur 17

12 3. The following window will display. As mentioned above in step 4 section II, enter the domain name followed by the username given by the radiology clinic without any spaces. For example, the user whose username is creferent must be entered: DMZCLARK\creferent. Then in the second line enter your temporary password given by the clinic and click on OK: 4. If the following message appears, click Continue to this website (not recommended) as shown below: christieinnomed.com Page 9 sur 17

13 5. Click on the logo Synapse Workstation Download Code as shown here: 6. This window shows up: please wait till the end of the installation. 7. When the Synapse installation is completed, the following window appears. If you want to use Synapse directly, check off the Launch the program box and click the Finish button as shown below and go to section IV.2. 14 You will notice that the Synapse icon has been created on your computer s desktop: From now on, to view the images from the radiology clinic double left click on the Synapse icon. III. Opening Synapse 1. To open Synapse, double left click on this icon: 2. In the following login window, enter dmzclark\ followed without any space by your user name and enter your password. Then click OK 3. Double left click on the name of the datasource as shown below: christieinnomed.com Page 11 sur 17

15 A. Synapse folders and list of exams A list of folders appears. Double left click on a folder to get a list of subfolders or exams. To open an exam and watch the images, double left click on it. If you want to quickly see your referred exams, double left click on the folder of your name (Referent, Christie in this example) and double left click on Referred Studies: To find an exam double click on the All Recent Studies or All Studies folder. Be aware that the All Recent Studies folder contains only exams from the last 7 days. In the Current Status column, the status Finalized means that the report is available for the exam. However, the Dictated status means that the exam has been dictated but the report is not typed and is not available. The Breadcrumb Trail allows users to navigate between folders by clicking on the requested folder: christieinnomed.com Page 12 sur 17

16 B. Searching and sorting exams To add search criteria, click on the field under the column header as shown below and press the Enter key. In the example below, we look for CR exams on July 15, When there is at least one search criteria, the criteria fields becomes yellow. For instance to look for a particular modality, in the Modality column, type in CR or DX for X-ray exams, CT for computed tomography, MG for mammograms, MR for magnetic resonance, OT for bone densitometry, RF for fluoroscopy and US for ultrasound exams. In the Priority column, means that the exam is urgent otherwise the priority is R for Regular. To sort a column click on its header. The sorted columns display a small triangle with the digit 1. If the triangle points downwards, the sort is descending (from newest to oldest). If the triangle points upwards, the sort is ascending (from oldest to newest). To remove the sort column click as many times as necessary until the triangle disappears. C. Opening images and comparing exams To view images, double click on the exam from the list. If the following dialog shows up, check the box: Do not Show this Warning Again: If there is a report, the following window appears. This window is called the Power Jacket. If there is a report, it is automatically displayed. christieinnomed.com Page 13 sur 17

17 The displayed exam is highlighted in green in the image above. To compare this current exam with a prior exam, click on the prior and click on the button. The example below shows that the lumbar spine is compared to the sacro-iliac joints. christieinnomed.com Page 14 sur 17

18 To close the Power Jacket window (if it is preventing you from viewing the images), click on the X in the upper right corner. To reopen the Power Jacket, click on this icon from the toolbar:. If you want to compare several exams, just check off the boxes to the right of each exam as shown below: To turn off the comparison(s), click on the button. christieinnomed.com Page 15 sur 17

19 D. Image scrolling and image management tools The image below shoes the current exam opened on the left and the previous on the right. The prior exam is noticeable by its date in reverse video: To go through all the images of the exam, left click first on the image then use the mouse roller. If you don t have a roller on your mouse, you can use the up and down arrows on the keyboard: You can verify which page (image) you are on and the total number of images in the exam: To get the image tools, right click on the image to display the following menu (see next page): christieinnomed.com Page 16 sur 17

20 You just have to pick up a tool with a left click. The mouse pointer will take the shape of the selected tool. E.g.: a magnifying glass for the zoom tool. To activate the tool, hold down the mouse left button and move the mouse up and down or left and right to produce the desired effect. If you release the mouse left button, the tool is disabled. To enable it again, follow the steps as explained above. The letters in front of some tools are keyboard shortcuts (for instance R in front of Ruler). To use the shortcut (R in our example), hold down the R key until you make a left mouse click. Hold down the left button, release the R key and move the mouse to draw the measurement. Note that after changing the Window Level, it is possible to return to the original image, by pressing 9 on the numpad. To delete an annotation (ruler, arrow, text, region of interest), right click to display the following menu and left click on Delete: christieinnomed.com Page 17 sur 17
