Prime directive #1: Monitor all systems all the time When you are in control of the telescope, you are the pilot in command, and ultimately in control of several million dollars worth of hardware! Just because you most likely won t kill anyone with it, doesn t mean you can t break things. Be watchful and considerate! If in doubt, ask. Even if it s 3am. That s what on-call support is for. Be situationally aware. You know at all times what the telescope is doing what it will be doing in the next 30 minutes what the weather is up to what the state of its various subsystems are Do not fall into the automation bias trap: If something looks fishy on your data, but TOAD is not issuing a warning and all indications are green, no alerts or warnings are displayed, do not dismiss your error diagnosis. If any parameters are off, you must investigate, report, and verify that it is safe to continue operations. Never trust one single source of information, try to build a coherent picture taking everything you know into account. If you don t succeed, call.
Prime directive #2: Screen layout Try to get accustomed to, and work with the displays in their current layout. The on-call person and the next observer will thank you! At the very least, do not spread out control displays over multiple desktops! Operationally not smart and inconvenient Situational awareness will suffer from that Conventions: Blue xterms: Bigrock Green xterms: MPCCC1 White xterms: Pyroclast
Prime directive #3: Be aware of directives #1 and #2 when planning your observation Take a reasonable amount of time to execute your observations. If it s a 6 day run with 18 hour observing days, it would be smart to bring along a colleague to help!
Starting order for all essential software 1. Start the correlator processes on MPCCC1 MOPS SPD MOTP 2. Start the control processes on Bigrock TCS attest Start the monitoring applications you may start those at any time, depending on what the problem is, it might be a good idea to start TOAD and see whether anything obvious is obstructing successful running of other software TOAD Monica attest atdrivemon dclocks xephem
TOAD Logical systems display In protoyping stage Monitors ~130 parameters Displays essential information Has 50+ warning and error messages including recommended remedial actions

MOPS commands: matten au matten ma CONFIG: Starting MOPS: Reprogramming the On a green xterm (MPCCC1), execute the command correlator mops. Tsys: Stopping MOPS: Click on tsys to obtain Click the exit button. the Tsys for each band/subband started from and control-c The the filename process. currently Whether your exit being was written brute is force or not, always give the system about 15 marked seconds, in the then File issue this command: dialog killmops Data available in TOAD / Monica If that does not work because TCS froze, find the green xterm window where MOPS was This will ensure that all processes belonging to MOPS are stopped.
SPD Starting SPD: On a green xterm (MPCCC1), execute the command spd. Use the commands sel * (select which IF s / Zoom windows to display) sca (scales the graphs) lay 1x4 (layout 1 x 4) q (quotient display) a (amplitude display, bandpass, use when looking for RFI)
MOTP Starting MOTP: On a green xterm (MPCCC1), execute the command motp. Note that this needs to be restarted after every MOPS restart. Use sel * initially to look at all bandpasses sca to scale Adjust powers with attenuators in MOPS All data available in TOAD / Monica
TCS Telescope Control Software Control Buttons: Starting TCS: STOP User settings: On a blue xterm Start (bigrock), Track Project ID Status execute Info: the command tcs. On the ensueing Parkscreen, Project Name Must select be all MOPS green and Expert Mode and Start. Start Sched Observer Sched file Stopping TCS: Click the exit Source button. selection: If that does not work Opens because catalog TCS froze, find the blue xterm window where TCS was started from and control-c the process. Select offset Whether your Sched exit was (pointing) brute force or not, always give the system about Track 15 seconds, (Enter duration) then issue this command: ~/bin/killtcs This will ensure that all processes belonging Log to window: TCS are MOPS configuration: stopped. Then proceed with starting TCS Sched if Exit you button: file wish problems so. Manually set center frequency Connection Use it, never problems click X Manually select windows (zoom mode) Set correlator config (Broadband / Zoom mode)
Monica Starting Monica: On a blue xterm (bigrock), execute the command monica. Then wait. You will then receive a menu asking which monica server to connect to: Narrabri, Parkes or Mopra. Connect to Mopra, and select the screens from your favourites. Weather will be the most relevant screens for most observers, to judge on conditions (MOTP will also help there). Also, Monica allows monitoring of lightning very accurately, as well as local weather conditions.
attest Starting attest: On a blue xterm (bigrock), execute the command attest. Then wait. Tabs: Click And ahoy wait some more. It will show up eventually, but takes its time to load. Be patient! Note that the actual position for focus in attest should not be used. Use Monica or TOAD instead. If the actual focus number displays XX, attest must be restarted.
atdrivemon Starting atdrivemon: On a blue xterm (bigrock), execute the command atdrivemon. Az/El information available in this screen is also available from TOAD, with about a 5 second delay. Sky pos / Error plot: Clickare le buttone, e presto, le finestre!
dclocks Starting dclocks: On a blue xterm (bigrock), execute the command dclocks. To display seconds, click on the window you want to see the seconds on, and hit the key s (yes, s for seconds!)
sio_point_recent_mops Starting sio_point_recent_mops: On a blue xterm (bigrock), execute the command sio_point_recent_mops. Why the long command name? That s a long story. Follow the ensueing prompts, take care to follow this advice: 1. Verify that the filename the script selects is the correct filename. Refer to the MOPS window for the currently correct filename 2. Once the calculated deviations are below your acceptability threshold (about 20 12mm, 10 3mm, interpolate for 7mm), do NOT press accept, press quit. Otherwise, you add noise on top of your last pointing, which might go the wrong way
xephem Starting xephem: On a white xterm (pyroclast), execute the command xephem. Xephem can be quite useful for locating SiO masers through the catalogue we have installed in the default directory.
General monitoring BOM Moree Radar page. Be aware that Coonabarabran is very far away from the under dimensioned weather radar at Moree. Any returns you see at all indicate a possible threat!

One column layout Level 1, Arial Regular 20pt Level 2, Arial Regular 18pt Level 3, Arial Regular 16pt Level 4, Arial Regular 14pt Level 5, Arial Regular 14pt These font sizes are recommended You can increase font sizes providing the hierarchy of information is maintained (ie. slide heading is largest, followed by Level 1, then Level 2 and so on) Font size must be consistent across all slides Do not use font sizes smaller than displayed here. If you do not have enough room to fit your text, spread your content over multiple slides
Two column layout with pullout box Level 1, Arial Regular 18pt Level 2, Arial Regular 16pt Level 3, Arial Regular 14pt Level 4, Arial Regular 12pt Level 5, Arial Regular 12pt For two column layouts PowerPoint automatically reduces the font size You can increase the font size as stated on slide 3 Level 1 Level 2 Level 3 Level 4 Level 5 [Pullout box: Arial Regular 16pt, fill R0 G153 B204, 80% transparency] Pullout boxes can extend to slide edge or remain inline with column text Pullout boxes can also be used 0% transparency with white text when needed [Pullout box: Arial Regular 16pt, fill R153 G153 B153, 70% transparency] Text. 31 Use of colour palette for diagrams - example Clay Platelet PET PET Gas Molecules Gas Molecules 0.8 Relative frequency Negative (score 1-3) Neutral (score 4-6) Positive (score 7-9) Acceptability of breads Refined wheat Wholemeal wheat BarleyMax
Use of colour palette for diagrams - example Platform Technology Microencapsulation Incorporation of Resistant Starch successful Probiotics/ Storage Immuno Food successful Applications Pharmaceutical applications Veterinary applications Prebiotics successful Nutrient delivery in vitro successful When using graphics they must remain inside the text margins Graphics are not permitted to overlap the background graphics (ie. diagonal lines, grey and blue strips at the top, footer, CSIRO logo at the bottom) By staying within the margins your presentation will remain clean and tidy, and be easier for your audience to take in
This is an example of a Section Divider slide Arial Regular, 44pt
Troubleshooting The background image disappears when I print Make sure your presentation has not turned off the background From the Tools menu select Options then click on the Print tab Under printing options ensure Background printing is checked If the background still disappears select all slides, go to the Format menu Background, uncheck Omit background images from master, and Apply to all The file size of my presentation is very large If your presentation has multiple images the file size will be large. You can compress your images to help the final size Compress images by using the Picture toolbar Either change the resolution of your images (which can affect the quality of your image so make sure to re-look at your images if you select this option) or compress pictures which works with colour without affecting the quality of your image Deleting cropped areas of images will also reduce the file size
