File Save Database Ctrl-S Restore Database Ctrl-R Initialize to Legacy Database Ctrl-I Exit Ctrl-X Process Control Database Administration Server Administration Start SpectroSERVER Save Configure SpectroGRAPH Restore Scheduler Point and Click on a button to learn more about its particular function.

Save Database The way the Save function works depends on whether or not SpectroGRAPH is on your local host. Click one of the following for the procedures that apply to you: Save Database (SpectroGRAPH on Local Host) Save Database (No SpectroGRAPH on Local Host)

Save Database (SpectroGRAPH on Local Host) If SpectroGRAPH is on your local host, Save initiates SPECTRUM On-Line Backup -- the same backup that is available from the Icon Subviews menu (Backup Database) of the VNM icon. To save the SpectroSERVER database: 1. Click Save. If SpectroGRAPH is on the machine but is not running, the system starts it up automatically before starting the Save. 2. Refer to the On-Line Backup section of the SPECTRUM document entitled Database Management for information on how to use the panels in SPECTRUM On-Line Backup.

Save Database (No SpectroGRAPH on Local Host) If there is no SpectroGRAPH on your local host, Save initiates a complete save of the SpectroSERVER database using SSdbsave (with the -c and -m switches). You can select a file name from a list of previous backups (overwrites the previous backup file), or you can enter a new file name. If SpectroSERVER is running when you Save, it is shut down for the duration of the save and restarted when the save is completed. Save is disabled during a Save or Restore or while the Model Type Editor or SpectroSERVER is in use. To save the SpectroSERVER database: 1. Click Save. The File Selection dialog box appears. 2. Type the path and filename for your database save file in the File Selection dialog box. 3. Click OK. If SpectroSERVER is running, a confirmation dialog box appears. 4. Click OK to begin the save. Click Cancel to exit the save without disturbing any existing files. Filter Directories... Select File to Save Database Files Once the save is launched, the Control Panel Status changes to. SAVING Selection OK Filter Cancel

Restore Database The Restore function replaces the models of the current SpectroSERVER database with the models of a previously- saved database. It makes this replacement either with or without a full initialization of the database-- at your option. We recommend you opt for full initialization, especially if you suspect the database may have become corrupted (but note that with large databases initialization takes considerable time). To simply remove all models from the database, use Initialize to Legacy Database. If running, SpectroSERVER is shut down during the Restore and restarted afterwards. You cannot restore when a Save or Restore is in progress, or when the Model Type Editor is in use. To restore: 1. Click Restore. A dialog box appears asking whether you wish to initialize your database. 2. Click Yes, which is the recommended option, especially if you suspect the database may be corrupted, or click No to save some time. In either case, the File Selection dialog box appears. 3. Set the path and select a previously-saved database backup using the File Selection dialog box, and click OK. If SpectroSERVER is running, a confirmation dialog box appears. 4. Click OK to begin the restore. Click Cancel to exit the restore without disturbing the database. When the Restore begins, the Control Panel Status changes to. RESTORING

Initialize to Legacy Database! CAUTION: Do not use this feature without first making a backup copy of your database. Initialize to Legacy Database initializes your database to the state that existed following your last installation. All models specific to your network are removed, leaving a database structure consisting of the modeling catalog and a limited number of internal models. To initialize your SpectroSERVER database: 1. Select File --> Initialize to Legacy Database from the menu. An information dialog box appears warning you of the consequences of initializing. 2. If you understand the consequences and still want to initialize your database, click OK. If you want to retain your existing database, click Cancel. 3. If SpectroSERVER is running when you start to initialize your database, a second information dialog box appears. Click OK to start the initialization. The CURRENT database in /user/spectrum/ss will be REMOVED and RESTORED to the INITIAL database created by the last SPECTRUM installation. ARE YOU SUREyouwishtoinitializethe database? OK Cancel This will cause the SpectroSERVER to be temporarily shut down and then restarted. Shall we continue? OK Cancel

File Selection Dialog Box The File Selection dialog box is frequently used to define the path and filename for a file to be saved or opened. The Filter fieldnearthetopofthedialogboxallowsyou to set a path and file filter. A filter sets the path for the files displayedinthefiles window and, with the use of standard wildcards, limits the filenames that appear in the Files window. Filter Directories File to Save Database Files Enter a path into the Filter field and press the Filter button to activate the filter.... The Directories window lists directories within the directory defined by your path filter. The Files window lists files within the directory defined by your path filter. 23 Configuration Panel The SPECTRUM Configuration Panel is accessible from the Configure button in the main window. It provides access to several configuration editors. Each editor allows you to define specific SPECTRUM resources. These same editors are accessible as selections in the Configure menu. Click on a button to learn more about a specific editor. Event Configuration Editor -Controls how SpectroSERVER and SPECTROGRAPH process events. You can define event to alarm mapping, event logging and how events are displayed. SPECTRUM Control Panel SPECTRUM Configuration Panel ECEditor Location Server Location Server -Provides information on server characteristics, backup location server, and client applications. Model Type Editor - Invokes the Model Type Editor, which lets you modify the SpectroSERVER modeling catalog and configure relations, object classes, and their contents. This option is greyed out if SpectroSERVER is running. NOTE: Model Type Editor General Configuration Close Host Security Changes you make from the SPECTRUM Configuration Panel don t take effect until after you restart the SpectroSERVER. Host Security - Authorizes host and users to connect to a machine. General Configuration - Define general SpectroSERVER operating parameters, such as file-paths, license keys and communications and performance tuning.

General Configuration The General SpectroSERVER Configuration window enables you to control certain aspects of the SpectroSERVER s configuration. When you make changes in this window, you are editing the.vnmrc resource file, which controls the SpectroSERVER s operations and performance. The General SpectroSERVER Configuration window is divided into these areas: License Control File Paths Performance Tuning Communications Event Log Control Statistics Log Control Click on one of the subjects above to learn more about parameters within that area. For further information on the.vnmrc file, consult the SPECTRUM document entitled Database Management. Expiration Date Activation Key VNM File Path General SpectroSERVER Configuration General SpectroSERVER Configuration License Control Performance Tuning Max. Number of Poll Threads Work Thread Age File Paths Communications Communications Port Number Resource File Path SNMP Comm. Port Number Event Log Control Statistics Log Control Max. Event Recs to Save MaxStatisticsRecstoSave Event Record Increment Statistics Record Increment OK Cancel

License Control Activation Key Your SPECTRUM license conveys the right to use SpectroSERVER and SPECTROGRAPH for a set period of time as controlled by an Activation Key and associated Expiration Date, without which SPECTRUM will not run. Whoever initially installs SPECTRUM finds this Key and Date printed on a certificate shipped with the installation CD (or gets it by phone from Aprisma Support) and inputs it on one of the installation screens. If a new Activation Key is needed (e.g. if the IP Address of the SpectroSERVER is changed, or if your license expires), input the new Key & Date into the License Control area. Expiration Date License Control 01/26/2000 If you attempt to use SpectroSERVER after the license term expires or with an invalid Activation Key, an error message is displayed advising you of an access problem. If you encounter an access problem, contact Aprisma Support. Consult the SPECTRUM Installation Guide regarding the SS Activation Key and consult the on-line documentation topic Getting Technical Help. Expiration Date Activation Key This parameter (format = mm/dd/yyyy) is the expiration date of your SPECTRUM license. It must match the date entered during installation (obtained from Aprisma Support or from the certificate shipped with the SPECTRUM CD). It should not be changed after installation, unless a new Activation Key with a new expiration date is obtained. This is a unique encrypted password for your copy of SpectroSERVER. The Activation Key is obtained from Aprisma Support usually during initial installation (instructions for obtaining the Activation Key are provided on the interactive screens of the installation program). If you are experiencing SpectroSERVER performance problems, contact Aprisma Technical Support.

Performance Tuning Performance Tuning Max. Number of Poll Threads Work Thread Age SpectroSERVER is a multi-threaded process. During normal operation, each subsystem allocates numerous work threads, and since each thread consumes memory and computing capacity, it s important to understand how they can affect performance. Max. Number of Poll Threads and Work Thread Age are only two out of the nine parameters used to control the allocation of work threads. To better understand the interaction between resources and the parameters controlling work threads, refer to the SPECTRUM document Performance View. Max. Number of Poll Threads This parameter sets the maximum number of work threads dedicated to polling. Work Thread Age Work threads that are no longer needed by a subsystem are returned to a work thread pool. This resource specifies how long (in seconds) a work thread can remain in the pool without being used. NOTE:

File Paths The General SpectroSERVER Configuration window provides easy access to two of the several file paths defined within the.vnmrc file. VNM File Path Resource File Path File Paths VNM File Path Resource File Path This parameter specifies the root subdirectory that contains SpectroSERVER external files, such as specific device alert mapping. This parameter specifies a pathname to the directory containing the Ethermap file. The Ethermap file lists manufacturers MAC address prefixes.

Communications Communications Communications Port Number SNMP Comm. Port Number Communications Port Number This parameter specifies an IP port number. The port number is defined during installation.this parameter can be set to any valid IP port greater than the port number assigned to the IPPORT_USERRESERVED parameter found in the / usr/include/netinet/in.h file, but less than 64K. SNMP Comm Port Number This parameter specifies a value that can be used to select a port from which SNMP requests can be sent via the SpectroSERVER. It can be set to any unsigned 16-bit integer in the range 0x400 (1,024) to 0xFFFF (65,535). Some implementations (e.g., IBM Mainframe MVS system) of SNMP agents treat the port as a signed number. In these cases, this resource must be set to a value between 0x400 (1,024) to 0x7FFF (32,768).

Event Log Control Under normal conditions, events are recorded in SPECTRUM s Distributed Data Management (DDM) database. However, if communication between the SpectroSERVER and the Archive Manager is lost, event information is stored temporarily in the SpectroSERVER s database until communication is reestablished. The growth of this temporary event data in the SpectroSERVER database is regulated by entries in the SpectroSERVER resource file (.vnmrc).the Event Log Control fields enable you to easily edit these settings. Max. Event Recs to Save Maximum number of records that can be stored in the database. (Default = 20000) Event Record Increment Number of records to be deleted from the database when the number of records exceeds the Max. Event Recs to Save value. (Default = 100. If you remove the event_record_increment entry from the.vnmrc file, the default is 250.)

Statistics Log Control: Under normal conditions, statistics are recorded in SPECTRUM s Distributed Data Management (DDM) database. However, if communication between the SpectroSERVER and the Archive Manager is lost, statistics information is stored temporarily in the SpectroSERVER s database until communication is reestablished. The growth of this temporary statistics data in the SpectroSERVER database is determined by entries in the SpectroSERVER resource file (.vnmrc).the Event Log Control fields enable you to easily edit these settings. Max. Statistics Recs to Save Maximum number of records that can be stored in the database. (Default = 5000) Statistics Record Increment Number of records to be deleted from the Statistics Log database when the number of records exceeds the Max. Statistics Recs to Save value. (Default = 500)

Distributed Data Management (DDM) Distributed Data Management (DDM) is a SPECTRUM infrastructure that provides a means of handling, collecting, storing, and accessing SPECTRUM events and statistics data across multiple landscapes in a fast and efficient manner. DDM works in both single SpectroSERVER and multi- SpectroSERVER environments.

Event Configuration Editor The Event Configuration Editor (the ECEditor ) is an application that allows you to control how SpectroSERVER and SpectroGRAPH process and display traps, events, andalarms. The screen appears when you click OK on the Select SpectroSERVER screen. Using the ECEditor you can perform operations such as modify existing traps, events, and alarms create new traps, events, and alarms definetraptoeventmappings define event to alarm mappings Your primary sources of information about the ECEditor are: the SPECTRUM documentation Event Configuration Editor the What s This? context-sensitive Help available on various screens of the ECEditor See also the appendix on traps, events, and alarms in the SPECTRUM document Modeling with the GnSNMPDev Toolkit.

Location Server The Location Server is used to locate other SPECTRUM services on the network. The Location Server Configuration window lets you define the location server characteristics, select a backup location server, define your client applications, and allows you to provide user model index service. The Location Server Configuration window is divided up into four sections: Location Server Characteristics Model Index Service Backup Location Server Client Applications Location Server Configuration Location Server Characteristics Backup Location Server Main LS Host: Hostname: Main LS Port: Port: Max Connections: Click on one of the subjects listed above to learn more about the parameter settings in that area. Find the folder for Scheduled Tasks. 3. Select the Scheduled Tasks folder, right click and select Open. 4. From the top Menu choices select Advanced -> AT Service Account. 5. Select This Account and enter a valid SPECTRUM user with Administrative permissions. 6. Enter the password for this user. 7. Select OK. 8. Log back in as the user.

Archive Manager The Archive Manager controls the retrieval of event and statistical data for reporting and data export. It is automatically started when you start up SpectroSERVER. It is not generally recommended that the Archive Manager be turned off, but the option to do so is provided here. Use Archive Manager on [host] - Because the Archive Manager starts up when you start the SpectroSERVER, this option is selected unless you choose to disable the Archive Manager on the machine you are managing. If you disable the Archive Manager, the Stop (Start) Archive Manager option is unavailable. Stop (Start) Archive Manager - If the Archive Manager is enabled, you can use this menu option to stop or start it.
