4 1. CAEN software Tools CAEN provides software Tools for Powered Crates and Front-End/Data Acquisition Modules. Such packages include Libraries, Demos and Software tools for Windows and Linux. The packages main features are: Libraries for National Instruments LabVIEW and C/C++ Demo programs in source code C/C++ (Windows and Linux), Java (Windows and Linux) and LabVIEW (Windows) as a starting point for the development of userspecific applications Software Tools (firmware upgrade, Module configuration...) CAEN NIM8301 overview CAEN NIM8301 is a software package supporting the NIM8301 Crate family, provided both as demo-application software set which allows an easy management of the CAENNIM8301 and as LabVIEW Virtual Instruments application. CAEN NIM8301 library provides, API s which allows to perform the most common operations, masking the lowest level details to the developer. Provided include-files (ANSI C) can be also used independently from the library; they provide all the definitions necessary to develop any application. 6 2. Software installation 2.1. Software installation: Getting started The following instructions will help through the module installation; 1. Download the Software Development Kit supported by Your OS (Linux/Windows) available at the product page of the supported crate described in 1.3: 2. Unzip the package on your computer; and open the CAEN_NIM8301_1_0 folder a. Windows Users shall launch the CAEN_N8301Setup-x.y.exe b. Linux Users must install the Library contained in the relevant folder Software installation: Windows As installation of Libraries and Demos is completed the structure of the created folders will be as follows: Fig. 2.1: Installation folder structure It is then possible to access the installed packages from the program thumbnails as shown in the following figures. 10 3.4. FAN Tray operation via Terminal FAN Tray operation via Terminal is intended as the interactive control and monitoring of one or more NIM8301 crates by using a remote terminal. The remote operation via Terminal can be performed in different ways, according to the interface used to communicate with the system. Nominally, it can be achieved by: Using the RS232 interface to connect one Mod. NIM8301 FAN Tray system to a VT100-like terminal or to a standard PC running a terminal emulator program; Using the USB interface to connect one Mod. NIM8301 FAN Tray system to a standard PC (the USB is managed as RS232 as described in Errore. L'origine riferimento non è stata trovata.) 12 Fig. 3.9: Mod. NIM8301 PS & General Status window Firmware Update menus This option is available only with Ethernet connection. These menus allows to upgrade the firmware of the Mod. NIM8301 FAN Tray/Power Supply control boards. The files can be retrieved from a computer connected to the crate via TCP/IP protocol by using a TFTP (Trivial File Transfer Protocol) Server Software 1. In order to add a file in the system flash memory via TFTP, follow this procedure: - check if the system is connected via TCP/IP protocol to a computer able to run a TFTP (Trivial File Transfer Protocol) Server Software and configured properly; - run the TFTP Server Software and select the directory containing the file you want to add; - enter the Update Menu by pressing U in the Mod. 14 3.5. CAEN_N8301 LabVIEW CAEN_ N8301vi is a set of LabVIEW Virtual Instruments which provide the capabilities of the library described in 1.1.
