Introduction The Clonezilla Live software is a free tool capable of migrating existing physical or virtual workloads directly onto a HC3 system virtual machine (VM). NOTE Clonezilla Live will only work with compatibility drivers (IDE drivers in HC3). VMs or servers utilizing performance drivers (virtio drivers in HC3) will fail. Ensure that compatibility drivers are in place for the Clonezilla migration; HC3 performance drivers can be applied post migration. Requirements Ensure the preparations are in place for your Clonezilla Live migration to HC3. Downtime; Clonezilla does not support live imaging. As stated in the Clonezilla Limitations here, The partition to be imaged or cloned has to be unmounted. A copy of the latest version of Clonezilla Live found here. Ensure you select the correct CPU architecture and file type. The file type should be ISO for use on the HC3 system. Burn a CD of the Clonezilla ISO file, create a bootable USB of the ISO file, make the ISO file available to the virtual instance, or otherwise make it accessible to the Source server to use for boot media. If using a Windows 2003 or XP Source server, or if you are having issues with a Windows operating system BSOD after migration, download and merge the MergeIDE registry file on the Source server before attempting the Clonezilla Live migration. See the link in Resources for the MergeIDE.reg zip file article. A HC3 VM created as a Target server for the Source server. The HC3 VM should be made as an exact replica of the Source server. This includes the same number of disks, RAM, CPU, and so on. As stated in the Clonezilla Limitations here, The destination partition must be equal or larger than the source one. Per the steps taken in this document, the disk capacities on the HC3 VM Target server must be the same as the Source server. A static IP should be available for the Source server and HC3 VM Target server for the Clonezilla Live migration. WARNING Clonezilla Live supports a single disk or partition migration at a time. Any Source server with more than one disk for migration will require each disk to be fully copied across the network one at a time to the HC3 VM Target server, increasing the required downtime of the Source server. The Source and Target server will be unavailable for the duration of the Clonezilla Live migration. If a near-zero downtime migration is required and the operating system is compatible, HC3 Move Powered by Carbonite is the recommended tool from Scale Computing. Speak with your Scale Computing Sales Representative for current pricing. 4

Prepare the Source Machine for Migration Clonezilla allows a Source and Target server to communicate on a network for migration purposes. In the context of the Scale Computing HC3 system, an existing physical or virtual workload Source server will be configured for migration to a HC3 VM Target server. Once the Source is configured on the network for Clonezilla Live the Target HC3 VM can be configured, connected to the waiting Source server, and the Clonezilla Live migration completed. WARNING Proceeding from this point will require complete downtime on the Source server. Ensure the proper maintenance windows are in place, all server access has been disconnected, and that you are prepared to begin the server migration on your network. The duration of the Source server downtime is dependent on the bandwidth available between the Source server and the HC3 VM Target server, the number of disks that will be copied, and the amount of data on each disk copied. Clonezilla Live is a full block by block copy. Prepare Windows with MergeIDE (Optional) 1. Backup your server if necessary. 2. Download a copy of MergeIDE.reg (MergeIDE) on the server if necessary. 3. Right click the MergeIDE.reg file in Windows and click Merge. 4. A pop up will appear. Click Run. 5. The Registry Editor dialog box will appear to verify the merge. Click Yes. 6. The MergeIDE registry changes will be applied. A reboot may be necessary to ensure the registry edit is successful. NOTE If using a Windows 2003 or XP operating system Source server, or if you are having issues with a later Windows operating system BSOD after migration, the MergeIDE registry edit should be used. Always observe the most recent Scale Computing HyperCore Support Matrix for a list of the supported guest operating systems on HC3. Scale Computing ScaleCare Support has no obligation to assist or troubleshoot unsupported operating systems even if they may function in the HC3 VM environment. 5

Configure Clonezilla on the Source Server 1. Verify the Source server backups prior to attempting the migration. Create a backup if necessary. 2. Insert the Clonezilla ISO file as applicable to your Source server. 3. Make any necessary changes on the Source server to boot from the Clonezilla ISO file location. 4. Reboot and/or boot the Source server into the Clonezilla interface. 5. Select Clonezilla Live Default Settings. 6. Select the preferred language. All steps will be shown in English. 7. Select Don t touch keymap on the Configuring console-data screen. 8. Select Start_Clonezilla Start Clonezilla. 6

9. Select remote-source Enter source mode of remote device cloning. 10. Select Beginner Beginner mode: Accept the default options. 11. Select disk_to_remote_disk local disk to remote disk clone. 12. You may be asked which NIC to configure. Skip this step if there is no prompt. If prompted, select the physical NIC to use to transfer data from the Source server to the HC3 VM Target server. 13. Select static for the IP addressing scheme. 7

14. You will be prompted for the details around your network environment. This includes the IP to use for the Source server, the subnet mask and gateway, the DNS domain, and other information. Populate all the fields as applicable. 15. You will be shown a list of all the internal disks on the Source server available to migrate. Highlight the disk you wish to clone to the HC3 VM Target server and press space bar to select it. Scale Computing recommends selecting the boot disk first if you have multiple disks to migrate. Click OK when all of the desired disks are highlighted. WARNING Clonezilla Live supports a single disk or partition migration at a time. Any Source server with more than one disk for migration will require each disk to be fully copied across the network one at a time to the HC3 VM Target server, increasing the required downtime of the Source server. Take this limitation into consideration when planning your Clonezilla Live Migration. 16. You are given the option to check the disk integrity prior to the migration. This step is optional on Linux based systems and MUST be skipped on all Windows based systems. Select the desired option to proceed. 17. The disk will be prepared for data transfer to the HC3 VM Target. 18. You will be prompted to select what to do once the Clonezilla Live migration process is complete. Select -pa choose Choose reboot/shutdown/etc when everything is finished. NOTE Selecting the choose option for the Clonezilla migration will require manual action to be taken on the Source server once the migration is complete. Either leave the Source server up and proceed with the next disk or power off the Source server to complete the migration. 8

19. The network listener process will start. Make note of the command syntax displayed as it will be required on the Target HC3 VM. 20. The Source server is ready for the Target HC3 VM connection to complete the migration. NOTE Review the available Clonezilla documentation if you need further assistance in configuring the Source server. Clonezilla is a third party product outside the scope of ScaleCare Support; all information provided here has been documented with minimal testing and has been seen to be successful in most environments. Always take your unique environmental design into account. 9

Prepare the Target Machine for Migration Prepare the HC3 VM Target for the Clonezilla Live migration. All preparation and configuration will be handled in the HC3 web interface. 1. Upload the Clonezilla ISO file to the HC3 system if applicable. 2. Create a new HC3 VM through the HC3 web interface if applicable. Turn off the virtio performance drivers on the HC3 VM. Match the Source server number of disks and the disk capacities. Clonezilla as it is used in this guide requires all destination Target server disks to be the same size as the Source server disks. Select the Clonezilla ISO from the drop down options to use as the boot image on the HC3 VM Target server. 3. Power on the HC3 VM Target server. 4. Access the HC3 VM Target server console in the HC3 web interface. The HC3 VM should boot to the Clonezilla Live configuration interface. NOTE Review the available Clonezilla documentation if you need further assistance in configuring the Target server. Clonezilla is a third party product outside the scope of ScaleCare Support; all information provided here has been documented with minimal testing and has been seen to be successful in most environments. Always take your unique environmental design into account. 10

Perform the Clonezilla Migration Perform the Clonezilla migration from the Source server to the HC3 VM Target server. The migration will be initiated, monitored, and completed from the HC3 VM Target server console screen in the HC3 web interface. 1. Open the HC3 VM Target server console in the HC3 web interface if applicable. The VM should be displaying the Clonezilla Live configuration interface. 2. Select Clonezilla Live Default Settings. 3. Select the preferred language. All steps will be shown in English. 4. Select Don t touch keymap on the Configuring console-data screen. 5. Select Enter_shell Enter command line prompt. 11

6. Enter the following commands at the command line prompt (known as the CLI going forward). The first command should return with no errors. The second command will display the network configuration GUI menu. ~# sudo su - ~# ocs-live-netcfg 7. Select static for the IP addressing scheme. 8. You will be prompted for the details around your network environment. This includes the HC3 VM Target server IP to use, the subnet mask and gateway, the DNS domain, and other information. Populate all the fields as applicable to the HC3 VM Target server. The CLI will return when the network information input is complete. 9. Enter the following command at the CLI to initiate the Clonezilla Live migration. An example of the command in use is shown in the image. ~# ocs-onthefly -s <Source Server IP Address> -t <Destination Disk on the HC3 VM Target Server> 10. The ocs-onthefly command will poll the Clonezilla Live information on the Source server and configure the migration parameters. Hit Enter to confirm the transfer. 11. The details of the Clonezilla Live migration job will be displayed. Enter y to proceed. 12

12. A second prompt will be shown to verify you wish to overwrite all data on the selected HC3 VM Target server disk. Select y a final time to proceed. 13. Wait for the disk cloning process to complete. Progress is reported on a partition by partition basis. Follow the prompts as necessary. 14. Shutdown and/or Power Off the HC3 VM Target once the Clonezilla Live migration is complete. All data should now be copied from the Source server to the HC3 VM. 15. Eject the Clonezilla ISO file from the HC3 VM card in the HC3 web interface. WARNING Verify the Clonezilla ISO is fully removed from the HC3 VM virtual CD tray and the boot order on the HC3 VM is set for the correct virtual disk(s). It is important to let the VM boot from the new virtual disk data to confirm it is working correctly. 13

16. Power On the HC3 VM and verify it boots normally. 17. New drivers for the hardware changes should be detected and loaded by the HC3 VM guest OS on this first boot. 18. Reboot and/or Shutdown and Power On the HC3 VM one final time to implement the hardware changes. 19. Repeat this process as necessary for any remaining disks. 20. The Clonezilla Live migration is complete. 14

Inject the VirtIO Performance Drivers into Windows VMs (Optional) Once the Clonezilla migration has been completed there is the option to inject the virtio performance drivers. This generally improves the performance and virtual device capabilities on the VM. This is not required (but is recommended) and should work for any Windows Operating System (OS) running 2003 R2 and up. WARNING This process requires several HC3 VM reboots to complete. Ensure the proper maintenance windows are in place before beginning. 1. Ensure the HC3 VM can power on and boot normally after the Clonezilla Live migration if you have not already done so. Troubleshooting with Clonezilla should be taken on the migration process if there are any issues with the HC3 VM before altering the drivers. 2. Power off the HC3 VM that was used as the Clonezilla Live migration Target if necessary. 3. Make sure the newest virtio drivers are mounted in the virtual CD tray. The latest drivers can be found for download in the Resources section. 4. Make sure to take a snapshot of the powered down HC3 VM before making any changes. 5. Add a new disk of the VIRTIO disk type to the powered off VM. The disk size is irrelevant unless you want to use the disk going forward as the disk will be deleted at the end of these steps. 6. Creating the VIRTIO disk type should auto-mount the latest virtio ISO available on the HC3 system. If not, manually mount the latest virtio ISO into a free CD tray on the VM. 7. Make sure the IDE disk is still set as the primary boot device in the boot priority for the VM in the HC3 web interface. 8. Power on the VM. 9. The OS should detect the new hardware (the newly added virtio disk). Select Install Device Manually when the OS finds the hardware. 10. Access the CD tray containing the Scale Tools in Windows Explorer. Inside the Scale Tools package there will be a series of files, including two Windows Installer Packages. One package is for 32 bit systems (ending in x86) and the other is for 64 bit systems (ending in x64). Double click the appropriate installer for the guest OS. 11. The Scale Computing Guest Tools Setup Wizard will appear. Click Install. 12. A Windows security confirmation window may appear; verify the installation to proceed. 13. The installer will then install all of the necessary virtio drivers automatically. 14. Click Finish when complete to close the wizard. 15. Shut down the VM once the drivers have been installed and/or updated. 16. While the VM is powered down, change any IDE disk types to VIRTIO in the HC3 web interface. 17. Power the VM back on. It should now boot normally with the virtio drivers installed. The disk that was added for the purpose of introducing the virtio drivers to the VM can be used or deleted as needed. 15
