2 WHAT IS REQUIRED BY THE GS? It is essenhal that all demonstrate CONSISTENCY WITHIN THE manuscript Fonts, spacing, header style, references
3 BODY OF THE THESIS OR DISSERTATION REQUIRED: DOUBLE SPACED, ARABIC PAGE NUMBERS Style and Structure The Graduate School does not specify a specific structure or organizahon for the main body (such as the number of chapters, chapter organizahon, format of subheads, etc.) Consistency of formawng is the key
4 FONT OPTIONS The following TRUE TYPE fonts are acceptable for the text used in the body of the manuscript: Arial (10, 11 or 12 pt) Tahoma (10, 11 or 12 pt) Times New Roman (12 pt) Verdana (10, 11, 12 pt) Students using LaTeX may use Computer Modern Roman
5 FONT STYLES Manuscripts may contain all font styles including: bold, underline, and italics The use of the style must be consistent when applied throughout the text The specific style guide used will specify how the different styles should be applied Typically, italics should be used for: Htles of books, non English words, genus/species names and direct quotes.
6 HEADER TITLES AND STYLES The text in the headers must match verbahm to those in the Table of Contents The Major Headers must also be centered or flush lec and must be consistent for all sechons of the manuscript MAIN BODY
7 HEADER TITLES AND STYLES To differenhate 2 nd, 3 rd and other level headers, different styles can be used (i.e. ALL CAPS, Bold, underline, italic) CONSISTENCY IN STYLE IS THE KEY
8 TABLES, FIGURES AND GRAPHS The font type used in tables, figures and graphs should be the same as that used in the body of the manuscript It is recommended that the font size used in tables, figures or graphs be 10, 11 or 12 pt when using Arial, Tahoma, Verdana or Computer Modern Roman and 12 pt when using Times New Roman Large tables that are reduced to fit on one page, may use as low as 8pt font, but must be legible
9 AVOID ORPHANS AND WIDOWS The first line of text from the start of a paragraph that is at the bojom of a page (widow) The last line of text from the end of a paragraph that is at the top of a page (orphan) Lone headers at the bojom of the page (widow)
10 HOW TO FIX ORPHANS AND WIDOWS Select the Paragraph menu Select the Line and Page Breaks submenu Select the Widow and Orphan control Once the manuscript has gone through its final revisions it may be necessary to fix widows manually by inserhng a page break (NOT A SECTION BREAK) that will automahcally move the widow to the next page
11 USF Graduate School (rev ) BODY OF THE MANUSCRIPT CHECKLIST Margins are: 1 top; 1 right; 1 bottom; 1.5 left Font is the same style and size as the remainder of the manuscript The body of the text is double spaced All Major Headers are spaced ~2 from top of paper (1 below top margin) The style and location of all major headers is the same (Options include: All capitals or upper and lower case; centered or left aligned) Continuation pages are flush with the top page margin, 1 below the top of the paper All subheadings are in the same style and location throughout the manuscript (i.e. upper and lower case left aligned; 0.5 indent and in bold, etc.) No isolated lines of text or subheads at the end of pages (widows) No single lines of text at the end of paragraphs at the start of new pages (orphans) All Tables are numbered consecutively and typed in Arabic numerals using a consistent style Type the tile of the each Table ABOVE the Table All Tables are inserted in the manuscript in a consistent manner (within the text, on a free standing page or compiled at the end of each chapter) All Figures are numbered consecutively typed in Arabic numerals and using a consistent style All Figures have a title and legend positioned BELOW the figure All Figures are inserted in the manuscript in a consistent manner (within the text, on a free standing page or compiled at the end of each chapter) All Figures are high resolution. If text is included in figure, be sure that it is legible The page numbers are typed in ARABIC NUMERALS (1, 2, 3, 4 etc.) and numbered consecutively beginning on the first page of Chapter 1 and ending at the Appendices Page numbers are positioned in the same location throughout the entire manuscript
