3 Introduction METADATA : data describing resources geographic datasets, series, services, utilities Allow the users to locate, access, evaluate and use geographic data & resources CATALOGUE : one of the key resources in an SDI Uses metadata to search and find resources (data & services) Metadata 3

4 Introduction INSPIRE Directive states that: It shall be possible to search for Spatial datasets and Services and to display the metadata Member states should provide descriptions of Spatial dataset and Services in form of metadata: For topics listed in Annexes I, II and III Member states will create the metadata in accordance with a regulation and a specific timetable 4

5 Problems in the creation of metadata Metadata is one of the main components of SDI, but its generation is not easy, due to several reasons: lack of qualified staff poor relation between data generation process and metadata creation process shortage of time and resources available at many organizations, complexity of metadata standards, metadata tools not always known and used,.. 5

6 Solution adopted by IGN in Spain To solve those problems IGN had promoted several initiatives to easier and promote the work of metadata creation: Courses, Training, Action Plans for creation metadata, Tools: CatMDedit and ServiCube, Metadata Geoportal 6

7 Solution adopted by IGN in Spain In 2008, IGN created a specific website on Metadata in collaboration with the Technical University of Madrid: to give support and facilitate the creation of metadata in the organizations taking into account the principles of INSPIRE and the reference documents elaborated in Spain about metadata Metadata Spanish Core (NEM): the minimum metadata set needs for geographic information 7
