Owner of North River Geographic Systems Owner of Saylor Mapping Consultant Been doing GIS since 2005 Been in the GIS Industry 20 something years. The actual number depresses me. Using QGIS full-time since 2014 I will be the guy with the Southern Accent doing most of the talking.

8 If you need a reason... Single-vendor dominance in our field is narrowing the understanding of what is possible amongst practitioners in that ecosystem. Maintaining a single-vendor policy dramatically reduces negotiating power with that vendor. Maintaining a single-vendor policy progressively de-skills your staff, as they become dependant on a single set of tooling. Practitioners have higher market value when they learn more than just the tools of one vendor, so self-interest dictates learning tools outside the single-vendor ecosystem.

15 Release Schedule Odd version numbers (2.17, 2.99 etc) are development versions. Even version numbers (2.18, 3.0 etc) are release versions. Release will happen every four months. Every third release (starting with 2.8) is a long-term-release (LTR) that is maintained until the next long-term-release occurs. Current Release will be the LTR in February 2019

20 Navigating the Interface: Tips Hovering your mouse over an Icon will give you a clue on what that icon does. Right Clicking in the Toolbar Area will present you with more ToolBars and Panels which will reveal more functionality The Browser will let you explore and drag and drop your files into the Map Canvas. The Status Bar will hold clues to your Projection! Plugins (which we haven t discussed) could create more Panels and more Toolbars

22 Additional Software You get more than just QGIS: SAGA GDAL/OGR GRASS Python R (is coming) Right now there is a discussion of How much outside software needs to come with QGIS It is a pain to maintain for the developers so they are in talks with all of the above communities.

23 Plugins QGIS uses Python as a it s primary programming language. If you are missing functionality you need you can write a plugin. Plugins can be simple to complex

31 File Based Geodatabases By default QGIS recognizes File Based Geodatabases in the Browser. This is thanks for the work on the OpenFileGDB Driver. Linux: You can read a File Based GDB MacOS: You can Read a File Based GDB Windows: Read with the standalone installation and write with the Network installer (install ESRI s Drivers).

32 SDE **I say all of this and I ve not tested it** In general QGIS will not connect to an SDE Database *****BUT****** ArcServer will install on top of Postgresql and use PostGIS for geometry If this happens and you DON T VERSION - QGIS can read and write against SDE
