1 December 2-5, 2003 MGM Grand Hotel Las Vegas A Quick Spin on Autodesk Architectural Studio Mario Guttman, AIA Kevin Durham Christie Landry (Instructor) (Assistant) (Assistant) BD13-5L Autodesk Architectural Studio is a sketching and collaboration tool that makes CAD much more accessible to people who are not heavy CAD users. This lab provides an opportunity for you to try out the software. We'll also explore some tips and tricks for more advanced users. About the Speaker: Mario is Firmwide CAD Director for HOK Group, Inc., a multidisciplinary international design firm with 20 offices in seven countries. He is a licensed architect with degrees in mathematics and architecture. In addition to practicing architecture for 20 years, he has worked in software development, computer-aided facility management, and construction. mario.guttman@hok.com

2 1. Basics a. Workspace Task 1: Start the program. You are in a Workspace. b. Tool Palettes and Tool Catalog Task 1: Click on any Tool Palette bar to open and close it. Click on the triangle to see the properties. Drag the bottom to resize it. Task 2: Open the Tool Catalog and drag a tool to one of the palettes. Right-click on the tool to delete it. Click the X to close the Tool Catalog. c. Trace Task 1: Select the Trace tool on the Drawing Tools palette and open a large piece. Use the mouse actions pick point mouse down drag mouse up.) Task 2: Select the triangle to see document properties. Note icons to lower right. Task 3: Be sure mouse icon shows selection arrow. Drag edges of trace document to resize. d. Pens, Markers, Fills and Text; Straight Line and Freehand; Erase; Tool Properties Task 1: Select a Pencil and draw a line. Select a Marker and draw lines that overlap. Draw a closed shape and fill with Paint bucket. (Note: if you accidentally fill the world with paint, use the Edit Pull-down Menu Undo command.) Create some Text. Task 2: Switch between the pencil, marker, text, paint bucket and on the Drawing Tools palette, and the Selector on the Workspace palette. Notice how the mouse icon changes, and that the selector arrow must be there to size/close document. Note how easy it is to accidentally paint. Task 3: Select a pencil. Be sure that the green Template is set to Freehand. Draw a line using mouse down draw mouse up. Select the Straight Line on the template and draw another line using mouse down drag reposition mouse up. Draw a Rectangle using mouse down drag mouse up. (Don t worry about the other options for now.) Task 4: Select the Eraser and erase over some of the lines. Task 5: Select the eraser tool and <right-click> to show Properties. Set it wider and erase some more. Look at the properties of the pencil, marker and paint bucket. (Note Pantone colors!) 2

3 e. Moving and Zooming Workspace Task 1: Pick the Workspace Zoom tool from the Workspace palette. <Right-click> and <left-click> a few times to see the zoom-in and zoom-out effect. With the zoom tool still showing on the mouse icon, drag a rectangular area with mouse down drag mouse up to zoom to a window. (Note how the icon does not do a dynamic zoom like AutoCAD despite the similarities of the icon.) Restore the workspace by selecting the Edit Pull-down Menu Reset Workspace Zoom command. f. Moving and Zooming Within Trace Task 1: Pick the Selector tool from the Workspace palette, and select anywhere in the trace document. Notice how selecting the document makes the bottom bar appear. Select the Document Zoom command from the icon on the bottom of the document. <Right-click> and <left-click> a few times to see the zoom-in and zoom-out effect. Notice that the zooms always center around the point where the mouse is clicked. With the zoom tool still showing on the mouse icon, drag a rectangular area with mouse down drag mouse up to zoom to a window. (Note again how the icon does not do a dynamic zoom like AutoCAD despite the similarities of the icon.) Restore the document zoom by selecting the Document Pop-up Menu, the triangle at the lower left of the document bar and picking the Reset View command. Try the Continuous Zoom and Pan icons from the Document Bar. g. Minimizing, Activating, Clipping, and Deleting Documents Task 1: Pick the Minimize icon from the Document Bar. Notice how the document shrinks to a small image at the bottom of the Workspace. <Click> on it to restore it. Task 2: Make another trace, on top of the first one, but slightly offset. Note how you can select one or the other to be the Active Document, i.e., the one on top. Notice how you can draw on the top one and trace over the one below. (Review how it is necessary to keep going back to the selector in order to switch documents.) Task 3: Select the Document Clip tool from the Drawing Tools palette. Move your mouse anywhere in the middle of the stacked documents. Note how the edges of the documents highlight. Pick anywhere; the documents are now clipped. (Note that there is no indication that the documents are clipped.) Try minimizing and restoring either document and see the group behavior. Remove the clip selecting the Document Pop-up Menu, the triangle at the lower left of the document bar and picking the Unclip All command. Task 4: Select the Delete Document command, the little trash can on the document bar, and delete the documents. 3

4 h. Distance and Scale Task 1: Make a fresh sheet of trace. Set the View Pull-down Menu Scale Ruler command to On (checked). Make sure that the Straight Line option is selected in the green Template palette. Pick a pencil and draw a line on the trace with the following sequence: mouse pick once move mouse (not drag) mouse pick once mouse pick once. Try the sequence again, but hold the <Shift Key> down to force lines to a fixed direction. Note how you can snap to other points when you start the line. Practice drawing with exact dimensions. Try using the Polyline option from the Template palette. This makes it easier to draw a series of lines. Try using the Rectangle option from the Template palette. In this case the sequence is mouse down drag mouse up. Task 2: Select the Document Pop-up Menu, (the triangle at the lower left of the document bar) and pick the Document Properties command. In the Scale field, select 1/8 = 1-0. Select the Graphic Scale check box. Close the Properties window. Notice that a scale has now been assigned. This will control your ruler display as well. i. Snapshots Task 1: Pick the Snapshot tool, which looks like a camera, from the Drawing Tools palette. Window a portion of your drawing with mouse down drag mouse up. Notice how a new document is created. j. Saving Workspace Task 1: Use the Workspace Pull-down Menu Save As command to open the Workspace Save As dialog box. Note that, unlike earlier versions of the product, Architectural Studio now treats the Workspace as a single document that can be saved, copied, ed, etc. There is no need to save it now, but if you leave Architectural Studio without saving, all of your work will be lost. 4

5 2. 3D Modeling a. 3D Paper Task 1: Select the 3D Document command on the Modeling Tools palette. Create a new 3D Document by mouse down drag mouse up. Notice that this document can be moved, sized, minimized, etc. in the same way as the Trace document was. b. Creating and Moving Solids Task 1: Select the Rectangular Solid command from the Modeling Tools palette. In the 3D Document, define the base of a box with a mouse down drag mouse up. Note that the height is set automatically. Task 2: Select the Move a Surface command from the Modeling Tools palette. Adjust the size of the solid with a mouse down drag mouse up on any of the faces. Task 3: Touch the Selector in the Workspace Template to be sure you are in selection mode, then pick the solid. Move the solid by gripping the yellow dot with the hand cursor with a mouse down drag action. Move faces by grabbing the red dots. Task 4: With the solid selected, pick the Move Objects icon from the Modeling Tools palette (the one with the axis arrows.) When the red tripod appears, move your mouse over one of the arrows. When the arrow turns yellow, pull in that direction with a mouse down drag mouse up action. You may type an exact dimension in the box that appears. The Rotate Objects command is similar. c. Changing the View Task 1: Select the Rotate icon from the bar at the bottom of the 3D document. Click near the middle of the document and with mouse down drag without letting up on the mouse, move the viewpoint around. Note that there are also Zoom and Pan icons. It is also worth learning how to use the Zoom, Pan or Rotate View command on the Modeling Tools palette. This is a little more difficult to use but combines all of the motions in one command. d. Carving Solids and Moving the Cutout Task 1: Select the Rectangular Cutout command on the Modeling Tools palette. Define a rectangle on the top of the solid with a mouse down drag mouse up. Notice that the cut goes all the way through. Task 2: Touch the Selector in the Workspace Template to be sure you are in selection mode, then pick the solid. Then pick again inside the cutout area. The cutout itself is now selected just as the solid was before. Move and stretch the cutout portion. e. Shadows and Transparency Task 1: Select the Document Pop-up Menu, (the triangle at the lower left of the document bar) and pick the Document Properties command. Select the Ground Plane Shadows and Object Shadows check boxes. Task 2: <Right-click> on the Paint icon, and select Tool Properties. Pick a light blue color and slide the Transparency slide bar to about 50%. Pick a solid object to paint it with the transparent color. Close the Properties window. 5

6 3. Importing Raster Images Task 1: Minimize all of the documents that are showing. Use the Insert pull-down menu Image command to insert the file Animation.gif. Minimize this document. Task 2: Insert the file Site View.png. Open a sheet of trace over this file and sketch a façade. Clip the sheets together and minimize. Task 3: Insert the file Site Plan.jpg. 4. Moving 2D into 3D Site Plan Example Task 1: With the Site Plan selected, use <Ctrl-C> (or Copy from the Edit Menu) to copy the image to the Wiondows Clipboard. Minimize the image. Task 2: Open a new piece of 3D Paper. Use <Ctrl-V> to paste the Snapshot onto the 3D Paper (or use Paste from the Edit pull-down menu.) Task 3: Use the Rectangular Solid command to draw blocks over the rectangles. Use the Move a Surface command to pull the height of the buildings. 5. Working with Autodesk Architectural Desktop (ADT) a. Exporting From Architectural Studio to ADT Task 1: Start Architectural Desktop. From Architectural Studio, Select the Document Pop-up Menu, (the triangle at the lower left of the document bar) and pick the Export Architectural Desktop command. Minimize the document. Task 2: In Architectural Desktop, use the Views Pull-down Menu 3D Views SE Isometric command to view the model. Use the Format Pull-down Menu Layer command to set all of the layers to color white. b. Saving From ADT to Architectural Studio Task 1: In Architectural Desktop, use the Desktop Pull-down Menu Publish to Architectural Studio command. Task 2: In Architectural Studio the wire frame model is a 2D drawing. 6. Conferencing Task 1: Talk to the other lab attendees at your table. Pick one computer to be the host. Task 2: (Host only) Use the Workspace Pull-down Menu Host Conference command to start a Conference. Carefully write down the code that is displayed, and give it to the other group(s). Task 3: (Guests only) Use the Workspace Pull-down Menu Join Conference command to join the Conference. You will need to enter the code the host gave you. 6
