Improve your experience using Revit for electrical fabrication With evolve fabrication you get some major items that bring value. High level of detail content with on the fly user controls. Next an accurate Bill of Materials Export into Excel. Also Total Station Point creation inside of the Revit platform. Finally a Spool Drawing Generator that can assist in making your drawings for fabrication. The Content The content included in this toolbar is all customized to meet the needs of a team that or will be fabricating assemblies out of Revit. It comes in one of the four toolbars called the Family Browser. The browser is broke out into categories of the related items. Wire-way Cable Tray Conduit Prefab Boxes Supports Strut-Hangers The content can be loaded either by mouse clicking the icon on the toolbar or assigning a Keyboard shortcut. Both of these can really assist you in saving time. With the icon there is a visible representation that a field technician will most likely recognize. This makes bringing employees from the field into the virtual construction team a better transition. Having a keyboard shortcut saves you from taking your eyes off of the screen to look for a family. The toolbar contains dropdowns as well. Simply pick the selected category and the menu will appear. DROPDOWN Page 3
Wire-way The Wire-way is design and based on the Hoffman line of Nema1/Flat cover/gray. Sizes range from 2.5x2.5-12x12. WIRE-WAY FAMILIES The wire-way raceway components can be placed and re-sized to the needed sizing. The trough stretches and rotates and also has displays for divider. The fittings such as elbows, tees and crosses will snap on and Auto-Size and match up to the size of the raceway you started with. There are also arrow indicators showing the openings of the wire-way. ONE TOO MANY FITTINGS SNAP AND SIZE Page 4
Cable-Tray One of the newer added to evolve is cable-tray. Currently there is one straight sections of the Eaton/B-line Aluminum ladder. Sizes available are 4 and 6 inch height and 6-36 inch widths. There is also divider that can be added to the top and is face based. Plans for the future include elbows and tees. The user controls allow for checkbox selection in the properties window for the family. Future fittings will have the Snap and Size features like the Wire-way and Conduit. THE TRAY PROPERTIES, AND THE TRAY IN 3D VIEW Conduit The Conduit in evolve is much like the wire-way in its behavior to snap and Auto Size to the base selection of pipe. The conduit covers EMT, IMC, RIGID (GRC),and PVC. Modeling conduit it evolve is a little different in that you model in the segment you want to build or display. We will cover some of the routing methods used in a later part of this class. CONDUIT FAMILY SEGMENTS Page 5
Prefab There are three Prefab families designed for improving the wall rough on a project. They allow for a quick configuration, placement and a selective Bill of Materials based on the quantity of the specified configuration. With these families there are over 100,000 variations you can make. PREFAB FAMILIES Boxes Box families range from Hoffman Nema 1 pull-boxes to interior outlet boxes and some weatherproof as well. Select a pull-box by the depth and the dropdown will lower showing available sizes. For other boxes there is a dropdown for you to select a specific box. PULL-BOX DROPDOWN Page 6
Supports Supports is a growing category in evolve. There are currently spreader brackets and ceiling box brackets. There is a floor support bracket currently in beta and other wall brackets to come in later releases. CURRENT SUPPORTS FLOOR SUPPORTS IN BETA Strut-Hangers Strut and hangers are available in evolve. Strut included is deep, shallow, back to back shallow, back to back deep, 3 hole, and embeds. Trapeze family included has single and double tier options. Also included are various Strut supports, brackets, and plates. Also in this section you will find hardware elements. Finally you will find mini s and other additional hangers in this section. STRUT HANGERS- HARDWARE The Toolbox With the evolve Toolbox you get a number functions to improve your modeling and layout efforts. Items for view toggles, rotation, phase switching, layout points and others can be found here. Again these can ALL have keyboard shortcut assignments that ill shave your times. Page 7
Quick View Switcher The quick view switcher allows the user to assign a favorite to each of the view types. The purpose of this is to toggle to specific views using a keyboard shortcut. This gives the user a better experience using multiple views, versus using window tile and small views. So they can toggle maximized windows and switch on the fly to a known view. VIEW ASSIGNMENT WINDOW Set Section Box This tool takes a section box and aligns it to a selected scope box on a project file. The section box is then hidden from the view. Zoom Zoom applies a zoom in to a selection set or selection instance. Very similar to Zoom all to fit. The results will vary slightly and most likely get you a little more zoom. Flip Flip is for raceway items. Similar to a mirror but it flips the item 180. Rotate Rotate spins a raceway like wire-way item on its central axis in 90 increments. Page 8
Rotate X, Rotate Y, and Rotate Z Rotate a family in its specified axis using these tools. 3d Move This tool works much like a node snap. It will take an item and move it to a specified point. It will take items like conduit and snap the bottom of the pipe to the top of a strut. Phase Filter Phase Filter give you and improved dialogue for creating print sets. PHASE FILTER WINDOW Link DWG Phase Filter gives a predefined selection menu for bringing in a.dwg link. Positioning is fixed to Origin to Origin without the extra process. Revit by default wants to Position Center to Center. Crosshair The Crosshair tool lets you place a symbol at a specific location with X,Y and Z coordinates. CROSSHAIR WINDOW Page 9
Connect Objects Connect Objects is used to rejoin a raceway network with other parts in a different network. A network being two or more families joined using raceway connections. Match Phases This tool allows you to match Revit phases from a selected family and apply them to a selection set. Filter Switch Filter switch take the Phase filter properties from their current state to None revealing all non-hidden objects assigned to other phases. Click Phase Switcher Click Phase Switcher is used to redefine the active window s Phase by a selected family instance. Phase Switcher Phase Switcher lets the user define an active window s Phase by selecting from a window dialog listing. The user can also use the filters at the base of the window optimize a search. PHASE SWITCHER WINDOW Page 10
Point Exporter/Importer Used to take selected Layout points and Export them to a.csv file. This dialog also lets the user import points into the Revit file. Also the Check Points is used to verify Construction vs. design and show any changes. SELECTED LAYOUT POINTS EXPORT/IMPORT WINDOW Create Points/ Create Points Linked These tools are used to place layout points inside a Revit project. The user may also add them to library content of their own by nesting them to a static location within a family. Relationships need to be linked to control the specified fields. Create Points can be defined by a parameter and grouped together. Create Points Linked let you add points to a DWG linked file. You can place those points individually. Page 11
Understand evolve s unique modeling tools and content The Bells and Whistles Let s cover some unique abilities that can be done with evolve. Draw vertical conduit risers From a box use the FB Conduit Conn and place it on the top of the box at a knockout location. Use Snap Center and place it. Size the conduit to match the K/O of ¾. Select the Conduit and Adjust from a straight pipe to a Box offset using the assigned checkboxes. Notice the connectors are already in place. You can switch the configurations as needed. VARIATIONS OF ADDING FACE BASED BOX CONNECTION Use the shape handles to stretch the pipe up, type a value or align to another pipe to continue the run. Page 12
Add-ons built into families A large percentage of families are more than a single family. There controls built in to add related components on the fly. TYPICAL INDOOR OUTLET BOX PROPERTIES BOX WITH MUD-RING(PLASTER RING) CHECKED ON Page 13
Add-ons built into families The conduit in evolve has a bunch of hidden elements and parameters that are used to improve the process of making sheets. The shapes are controlled using view templates. Below you see a kick 90 segment with the right triangle and the red triangle at the 90. KICK 90 FAMILY WITH HIDDEN ELEMENTS The user controls allow you to pick bender type, the angle of the kick, the kick height, the conduit type, as well as the kick direction left or right. KICK 90 PROPERTIES Page 14
The shared text parameters inside conduit give the user a means for sorting and filtering for later when schedules are made for material counts, kitting, and prefab. SHARED TEXT PARAMTERS IN CONDUIT FOR FILTERING Auto Size features The conduit and wire-way in evolve sizes to a raceway and adopts the size decided on the first instance. ELBOW SNAPPING AND SIZING TO MATCH Array for Conduit Couplings Added to Conduit Families Users may choose between graphic display couplings or hidden. By default, the couplings will be counted in a hidden system that will add a coupling as the segment are stretched. HIDDEN COUPLING ARRAY BEFORE LENGTHENING Page 15
HIDDEN COUPLING ARRAY AFTER LENGTHENING User can Manually shut off segments hidden array with REMOVE HIDDEN COUPLING or SHOW 1 COUPLING AT END ONLY on the CO_CE_SNAP_N_SIZE_CONDUIT.(STRAIGHT PIECES) As well based on the pipe type the fittings will automatically adjust to the associated types.eg(pvc,rigid,etc). The user can also uncheck EMT Set screw to use compression type when EMT is selected. When a run is selected via tab select like the example below, you still get the fields to adjust those settings on an entire run. While the Elbow carries these parameters it is vacant in counting couplings. It was necessary to add the parameters so when a Pipe network is selected the fields are available. Below a raceway run is selected. Notice the properties below that as Multiple families are selected. SELECTED NETWORK (ABOVE) AVAILABLE PARAMETERS (BELOW) Page 16
Strut Features Strut can be placed and set at an Offset, and then stretched or lengthened to a set size. You can add plates and brackets to the strut from the selected toolbar. STRUT SHOWN WITH BRACKET (ABOVE) STRUT PROPERTIES (BELOW) Add conduit and wire-way to strut using 3D Move The 3D move tool takes a family selection and places it to another point. This works much like a snapping tool and gets you right where you want to be. In this example I will take a strut and place 2 families at the very top using this tool. Page 17
STRUT AND RACEWAYS SHOWN IN ELEVATION The strut is at a different elevation than the other 2 families. In a 3D view lets snap these two items in place. STRUT AND RACEWAYS SHOWN IN ISOMETRIC VIEW Run the 3D move by selecting it or using the shortcut. Select a point on the wire-way. SELECTING THE WIRE-WAY AREA TO SNAP (BOTTOM CORNER) Next select a location on the strut. The wire-way will now snap to that location. Page 18
SELECTING THE TOP FACE LOCATION ON THE STRUT It will snap just like the picture below placing it on the top of the strut. THE WIRE-WAY SNAPS TO THE STRUT Now we will do the same for the conduit and place it on the top of the strut. Begin by start by selecting 3D Move, and then the base of the conduit. Be sure to be aligned with the outside edge and the red centerline. Then select the face of the strut. SELECTION POINT OF CONDUIT TO PLACE ON STRUT It will place the conduit at the top of the strut with precision. Page 19
ELEVATION SHOWING NEW PLACEMENT OF WIRE-WAY AND CONDUIT Trapeze single and double The trapeze family can be made single or double tier. You can choose strut types, material, hardware and the position of the lower rack. TRAPEZE FAMILY SHOWN IN SINGLE AND DOUBLE TIER MODE Page 20
Conduit Bodies Most conduit bodies in evolve have fittings included on the end points. The openings are indicated by arrows. The fittings can be changed from Compression to set screw with a checkbox or shut off when using a different conduit type. L FAMILY SHOWN ABOVE IN 3 MODES, LL, LR, AND LB MOGUL UNILET SHOW ABOVE WITH PROPERTIES Content Data Content in evolve is using shared parameters to group the families into a category these categories place a major role in some of the visibility tools that are in the toolbars. Another major item is that the data is set up to be fluid in schedules. Again with shared parameters every family is given some key items to help it work well in scheduling. There is a parameter called UM for unit of measure. This assigns a part either a value of LF (lineal feet) or EA (each) this is helping to sort the data for a material requisition and makes everyone s job downstream easier. Page 21
Export Req Form A SAMPLE SCHEDULE LISTING PARTS IN A PROJECT SORTED BY UM Once a project is complete use evolve s Export Req Form to send your Revit schedule to a provided excel form. This form can be modified to meet your company guidelines and format. From a schedule view activate the Export Req Form tool. The Excel form will pop up. From there you will refresh the Data and go to the location in your local drive. Page 22
EXCEL FORM INCLUDED WITH EVOLVE(ABOVE) DATA CONNECTION REFRESH DATA CONNECTION LOCATION Page 23
DATA REFRESHED IN EXCEL Understand evolve s Spool/Sheet creation for fabricating The Spooling Process This is where it all pays off. You ve modeled using evolve content, ordered your material and it s time to make the sheet sets for fabrication. SAMPLE PROJECT Page 24
View and Sheet Creator The view and sheet creator uses the power of Revit phases to assign views and sheets using the instances drawn to those phases. The views filter out other phases and strictly shows what is in that particular phase. So if you model components to phase 1 for example, a view sheet are made based on the extents and instances in that phase. The views are then placed into the newly created sheets combined with a selected title block that is either in a project or one that is loaded during the creator process. Once sheets and view are made the next stages can be completed. View and Sheet Creator in process The process starts using an isometric view that has standards preset. So factor in the typical scale based on your title-block. As a starting point for example if you want to use an 11x17 you could start with 1 1. We suggest that once you figure out what you like best make a view in your template file along with a view template predefining these settings. Next we want to lock our 3D view ahead of time. If not you will be adding that step to every page you make, if you want to add tags. Finally anything you want hidden like scope boxes or other similar items go ahead and hide them before starting the creator. One you begin the View and Sheet Creator it is a One Time process so be sure that you are Done-done. If you need to do otherwise. Duplicate your file and split up your releases so that what you don t want to print can be done at a later time. Begin by running the tool. You will have a dialog pop up with check boxes. One is confirming you are satisfied with your phase assignment. Project information refers to Project parameters that are in communication with your title block. If you have text fields that auto populate to your text boxes in the title block family you are using. If you have a QAQC checklist you are using internally, you have a checkbox to validate you finished filling it out. Finally it asks did you place a Scope box around the tool area. This helps validate the project extents for the View Creator. SHEET CREATOR DIALOG The next dialog will ask you to select a title block either from the project or from your computer. Pick a title block and proceed. The computer will run through and create the views and sheets. Page 25
The Details The process of detailing is ready now that we have our sheets. Open a sheet and Adjust the scale using Scale up Scale Down in the sheet set tools. Once the view is scaled activate the view and begin tagging and dimensioning. If dimensioning conduit. You can use the Pick a plane tool in the sheet set tools to set your dimension plane. With the view locked pick a plane on one of the shapes hidden in the conduit. Then select DI to begin you dimensioning. HIDDEN SHAPES IN RED TO SELECT WORK PLANE DIMENSION DONE IN ISOMETRIC VIEW Page 26
Use the Conduit Bend Tag from the Annotation Panel of Sheet Set Tools on the bends of conduit. The tag will provide you the needed information to bend in prefab. CONDUIT BEND TAG Prefab Sheet Samples Page 27
