Steven Popke, PE Wisconsin DOT Bureau of Project Development Unit Wisconsin Department of Transportation since 2014 Assists with WisDOT spilot program for sharing design model data with construction contractors Involved in contractor outreach efforts 1 Understand which surfaces are required. Determine what design elements should be included in a surface. Learn what characteristics are in a good surface model. Understand what the required file formats are and how to create them. Design Effort Construction Benefits VALUE 3 4 Chapter 15 Plan Preparation Section 5 - Methods Directory, filenaming conventions Project folder structure Files Civil 3D objects CAD standards Design Models (15-5-7) Types Content Definition Densities Detail Chapter 19 Plans, Specifications and Estimates Section 10 PS&E Transmittal and Composition Subsection 43 Digital Data Exchange and Project Data Awareness Digital Data categories and file formats Civil 3D Project Data Submittal( ) Contractor Data Packet ( ) 1
What projects require design models? Design projects started after July 1, 2014 must be designed in Civil 3D and deliver design models. (FDM ) Design models shall be delivered for each LET project that requires cross sections sheets in the plan. See FDM for cross sections requirements. (FDM ) The information extracted from Civil 3D roadway design project data that fully defines the 3D geometry of a design effort. (FDM ) Existing condition mapping Superelevation transition information Surface models Horizontal alignments Vertical profiles Right of way and easement 2D linework Proposed roadway features 2D linework Metadata documentation 7 8 Top (all finished grade features) Datum (finished earthwork) EBS (excavation below the Datum surface) All subbase surfaces within subgrade limits Pavement Base Course Access/Driveways*
Open Corridor dwg, save as Corridor-Pavement dwg. In each Assembly, remove the subassemblies that lie outside the subgrade shoulder point. Delete all corridor surfaces except Top and Base Course XS. Rename Top surface to Pavement and Base Course XS to Base Course. Set all Regions to a frequency matching WisDOT3D Surface Model Standards for Pavement surfaces Create Refinement files and surfaces. Review definition of refinement Top and Base Course XS surface, replicate edits in Pavement and Base Course surface. Create 3D Surface Model files (surfaces, breaklines, boundary). Pavement surface limits = same material & thickness General guidance for model content Will the item in question be utilized in contractor AMG operations the way AMG is currently being used or be used in staking operations? Will exclusion of the item in question introduce the possibility of misinterpretation of design intent? Are there other benefits? Quality of design Visualization Quantities 16 Proposed work surface model definition density (FDM Table 7.1) Surface model detail requirements (FDM Table 7.2) 17 3
Slope transitions Slope transitions between rates within cut or fill slopes (same direction slopes). Modeled slopes should be smooth given the size of the equipment being used. Pavement structure depth transitions Transitions may be abrupt and modeled as nearvertical surfaces. Help document Roadway Modeling Tip Videos Controlling corridor daylight slopes with profiles Controlling corridor daylight slopes with superelevation Transition from curb return to ditch Model roadway shoulder subgrade to where the curb return begins and square up the end of the curb. Help document Roadway Modeling Tip Videos 21 The spreadsheet is a tool to aid in reviewing the creation of project surfaces. The spreadsheet can be edited to fit the review needs for each project. Goals for modeling Corridors= create the majority of surface breaklines Refinement surfaces = represent finished design
Review applicable WisDOTCivil 3D training and Best Practices Review WisDOTCivil 3D Project Data Flow map The purpose of the corridor in our design workflow is to create the longitudinal breaklinesof our proposed work surface models. Plan a Civil 3D project modeling approach First breaklines Then cross-sections Communicate with Survey Data Coordinator The corridor surface does not contain duplicate feature linesthat are not coincident. Duplicate feature lines with identical geometry are acceptable An insignificant offset distance is needed between the bottom and top breaklinesin order to create the vertical surface. Help document Roadway Modeling Tip Videos Surface Modeling Best Practices & BreaklineExtraction Troubleshooting Help document Roadway Modeling Tip Videos Help document Modeling -How can I correct vertical link problems on the refinement surface? Parameter Overrides Ok for scenario checking NOT ok for final design The subgrade slope under the curb and gutter matches the subgrade slope of the adjacent lane. Help document Modeling -Avoid using "Parameter Overrides" to make changes to your corridor Exercise DS More intersection refinement
Civil 3D corridor surface models used in the development of proposed refinement surface models are defined by corridor feature lines only (no links). Surface Modeling Best Practices & BreaklineExtraction Troubleshooting Help document -Modeling -Why corridor links are not allowed All the same proposed surface model types have been combined into one (1) refinement surfacefor each type of surface model (per construction stage if staged cross sections are included in the plan). (FDM ) Surface refinements are done using feature lines or 3d lineworkinstead of performing surface edits. Added breaklineshave been updated after any changes to the corridor. Surface edits that are acceptable include delete line, delete point and paste surface Surfaces between the breaklinesare smooth and continuous; there are no irregularities in the surface when observed in a 3D view. Example checks -Exaggerate the surface vertically, use contour surface style There are no holes located in the surface. The TIN edge orientation reflects the intent of the design. The surface model matches the proposed plan geometry
The Rfnt-Topsurface and Rfnt-Datumsurface are pasted together in a manner that the common design elements represented beyond the subgrade shoulder point are represented by a single surface (either Rfnt-Top or Rfnt-Datum). Challenge Driveway aprons span the ETW_Datum_CG feature line Apron refinements need to happen in both the Rfnt-Datum and Rfnt-Top surfaces New recommended Refinement Surface Workflow Recommendation Crdr-Topsurface extends to the slope intercepts All apron refinements can be done in the Rfnt- Top surface Top refinements automatically appear in the Rfnt-Datum surface Previous Best Practice Recommended Best Practice Refinement surface construction is different End result of refinement surface is the same Both approaches are acceptable!
Other Benefits: reduce the need for interim surfaces Crdr-Datum Drawback Crdr-Datum surface boundary for any nondefined fill area between coded datum surfaces will require an internal boundary. (example: divided roadways) Crdr-Datum Options Surface Model Delivery Impacts 1. Create two surface boundaries outside subgrade shoulder points hide median subgrade shoulder points 2. Create two separate Crdr-Datum surfaces one for the NB/EB subgrade a second for the SB/WB subgrade Rural driveway surfaces no longer need to be pasted into the Rfnt-Top surface Rural driveways surface is a separate surface model deliverable
Contractor data files are files exported from design files. They do not have a live connection to the files they were created from. They need only be generated for P.S.& E. delivery Rfnt Surface Corridor Surfaces Gradings Breaklines & Points added to Rfnt surface Rfnt RawData File created by Design Surface Data Extractor 3D polylines extracted from Rfnt Surface breaklines Rfnt Verification Copy valid breaklines from RawData to create Rfntfrom Breaklines Volume Surface Contractor Data Packet.xml.dwg exports WisDOT Civil 3D Training - Extract Design Surface Data Utility Overview
