Overview September 7, 2017
Purpose The purpose of this presentation is to provide an overview of the changes to the required deliverables and workflow for developing plans and models for Illinois DOT projects This presentation is not an exhaustive description of changes. All those associated with development of IDOT projects are instructed to read the new policy manual in detail
Presentation Definitions Definitions used throughout the presentation Open Roads term used to describe the technology built into Bentley civil software Corridors term used to describe a 3D model of local roads, highways, or railways Template a graphical representation of a typical section that defines a corridor SUE \ SUDA Subsurface Utility Engineering Subsurface Utility and Drainage Analysis GCS: Geo-coordinate systems Terrain Model: a graphical representation of an existing ground in 3D
Title of New Policy Manual Is: Computer Aided Design, Drafting, Modeling and Deliverables Manual The Illinois Department of Transportation CADD Reference Guide & Policy for 3D Modeling & Project Deliverables for Preparation of Roadway and Structure Plans
Primary Goals Replace the previous Deliverables manual, Roadway CADD Manual, and Structures CADD Manual with a single, new and enhanced manual Update required deliverables and computer workspace requirements to emphasize 3D modeling Supply 3D models to construction to enable use of Automated Machine Guidance workflows
Superseded Manuals CADD Roadway and Structure Project Deliverables Policy CADD Roadway Drafting Reference Guide CADD Structures Drafting Reference Guide
Effective Date On April 27, 2017, IDOT issued Departmental Policy D&E-29 which established the Computer Aided Design, Drafting, Modeling and Deliverables (CADD) Manual. The new policy manual is effective for all new projects started on or after the issuance date of this Departmental Policy.
CADD Workspace Enhanced MicroStation\GEOPAK\Open Roads workspace has been overhauled for use with projects executed in accordance with the new policy manual.
Section 1 Introduction Section 1 is largely just introduction but also includes: the definitions used throughout Defines the prescriptive language used in the manual: shall should may
Section 1-2 & 1-3 Benefits Section 1-2 describes benefits of CADD standards Section 1-3 describes benefits of 3D Models. All designers are encouraged to read these sections and take seriously the benefits of adherence to policy

Section 3-4 Levels More details added about use of level structure OpenRoads Feature Definitions use MicroStation Element Templates to define element symbology
Section 3-5 Color Table Structures and Roadway color tables have been combined This resulted in a change of color number used by structures, although the on-screen color appearance is the same
Section 3-6 Feature Definitions Detailed discussions of feature definition libraries included in the workspace Includes discussion of the various types of feature definitions in use (Geometry, Survey, Utility) Library Name IDOT_Levels_ElementTemplates_Features.dgnlib Drainage_Feature_Definitions.dgnlib Utility_Feature_Definitions.dgnlib Description Contains feature definitions used for Design Surveys and Roadway Design. Contains feature definitions used for drainage modeling/design, including culverts and sanitary sewer feature definitions. Contains feature definitions used for modeling of utilities other than drainage or sanitary sewer.
Section 3-8 Fonts and Text Styles The entire workspace has been adjusted to use true type fonts Utilizes a family of fonts developed by Florida DOT, which is a san serif font containing all the special symbols needed by civil designers All text styles, preference files, cells, sheet borders and example plans have been changed to use the FDOT fonts Some of the title sheet text styles utilize a true type font which is not one of the FDOT style
Section 3-9 Dimension Styles Several new dimension styles have been added Dimension Style Name Bridge 1:001 Bridge 100 Bridge 140 Bridge 200 Bridge Boring Roadway 120 Roadway 140 Roadway 175 Roadway 200 Use Structures Dimensions Roadway Dimensions
Section 3-10 Annotation Scale Annotation Scale Workspace and manual have been adjusted to use the same scale definitions for structures and road Which allows the two workspaces to move closer together This decision resulted in a ripple of changes throughout the workspace and the manual
Section 3-10 Annotation Scale Scales are now defined as mathematically correct ratios. For example, 1 = 50 is defined internally as a 600:1 ratio This resulted in a change to cells, line styles and text styles contains information on updating files started in the previous workspace
Section 3-11 MicroStation Cells Cells: Most cells edited to accommodate changed annotation scale definitions Some cells are defined as 1:1 and do not react to annotation scale. Example, drainage structures

Section 3-14 Open Roads Civil Cells New civil cell libraries added: Bridges Curb Ramps Interchange Ramps Median Openings Roundabouts T-Intersections
Section D Model Density What does this mean? Accurate 3D models require smaller tolerances in horizontal, vertical, and corridor template drop intervals Controlling the accuracy Horizontal and vertical accuracy ±0.05 feet Key template drop stations at all sag locations Include horizontal and vertical cardinal stations Densify horizontal and vertical curves Workspace sets tolerances for linear, profile, and curve stroking To maximize performance and stability, limit the length of a corridor to 2 miles in a single DGN
Section D Model Density Maximum corridor template drop interval guidance Geometry Type Maximum Template Drop Interval Rural Section Tangents 20 feet Curves (Horizontal and Vertical) 10 feet Intersections 5 feet Urban Section Tangents 10 feet Curves (Horizontal and Vertical) 5 feet Intersections 2 feet To maximize performance and stability of corridors, limit the length to 2 miles
