LESSON 4 Solid Figures Indicators 4.G.1, 2, 9,,, solid figure has three dimensions: length, width, and height. Some solids have curved surfaces. base cone has 1 base. The base is a circle. base base cylinder has 2 bases. oth are circles. Other solids have flat surfaces that are based on polygons. Each kind has a certain number of faces, edges, and vertices. Remember polygon is a closed plane figure with line segments for sides. circle is a closed plane figure, but it is not a polygon. sphere is a round solid, like a ball. Vertex, Prisms are solids with sides that are rectangles. They have two faces that are bases. The base can be any polygon. Face Edge, 6 faces 8 vertices 12 edges rectangular prism has a rectangle for the base. 5 faces 6 vertices 9 edges triangular prism has a triangle for the base. Pyramids are solids with sides that are triangles that meet at one point. They have one face that is a base. The base can be any polygon. cube is a special kind of rectangular prism. ll the faces are squares. net shows what a solid looks like unfolded. 4 faces 4 vertices 6 edges triangular pyramid has a triangle for the base. 5 faces 5 vertices 8 edges rectangular pyramid has a rectangle for the base. This net of a cube shows the 6 squares laid flat. pyramid always has the same number of vertices as it does faces. Unit 3 Geometry 89 The ontinental Press, Inc. o not duplicate.
Read each problem. ircle the letter of the best answer. 1 Nelson cut out this pattern. 4 How many vertices does this solid have? P R S V T When Nelson folds the pattern, which point will meet point R? point P point S point T point V 5 Which solid figure has 5 faces and 9 edges? The correct answer is. The pattern has 6 sides, so it will fold to make a rectangular prism. Point R will meet point S. 2 Which picture shows a cone? 6 Which shape has more than 1 square face? cube cylinder cone square pyramid 7 Look at this figure. 3 How many edges does a rectangular prism have? 4 6 Which of these patterns was used to make the figure? Unit 3 Geometry The ontinental Press, Inc. o not duplicate.
Read each problem. Write your answers. 8 manda wrote this clue to describe a geometric solid. This solid has 4 faces and 4 vertices. What is the name of the solid? nswer: triangular pyramid Pyramids always have the same number of vertices as faces. If a pyramid has a total of 4 faces, then one must be the base and the other three, the sides. So the pyramid must be a triangular pyramid. 9 Look at this pattern. Name the solid figure the pattern would form when it is folded. nswer: 10 certain solid has a curved surface. It has no bases. It has no edges or vertices. What is the name of the solid? nswer: 11 This package has the shape of a solid. How many faces does the solid have? nswer: Handle With are 12 In the space below, draw a cube. Unit 3 Geometry 91 The ontinental Press, Inc. o not duplicate.
Read the problem. Write your answer for each part. 13 Solana cut out these shapes and taped them together to make a solid. a. In the space below, draw the solid Solana made. Name the solid. Explain how you know your answer is correct. b. How many faces, edges, and vertices does the solid have? Show or explain how you got your answer. sk Yourself How many edges will there be after the faces meet? 92 Unit 3 Geometry The ontinental Press, Inc. o not duplicate.
Question 17 is an open-response question. e sure to answer and label all parts of the question below. Show all of your work (diagrams, tables, or computations) in the space provided. If you do the work in your head, explain in writing how you did the work. 17 The table shows how the number of passengers on a train depends on the number of cars. TRIN PSSENGERS Number of ars Number of Passengers a. How many passengers are in each train car? Show or explain how you got your answer. nswer: b. How many passengers are on a train with 16 cars? Show or explain how you got your answer. nswer: c. If a train has n cars, explain how can you find the total number of passengers. Session One 10 The ontinental Press, Inc. o not duplicate. Stop

0 LESSON 2 ngle Measure 4.M.5.a, b; 4.M.6; 4.M.7 The measure of an angle is found in degrees. The symbol means degrees. 90 means 90 degrees The symbol means angle. n m in front of the means the measure of an angle. m Y means measure of angle Y n angle is measured as part of a circle. If the vertex is at the center of the circle, the angle s measure is a fraction of the circle. X ngles can be classified by their measures. cute Right Obtuse Straight What types of angles are in the figure below? M P N ngles ONQ and PNQ are acute angles. They are smaller than 90. ngles PNM and PNO are right angles. They are exactly 90. ngle MNQ is an obtuse angle. It is greater than 90 but less than 180. ngle MNO is a straight angle. It is exactly 180. You measure an angle using a tool called a protractor. What is the measure of R? Q O ngle X is a right angle. It measures 90, or 1 4 of the circle circle measures protractor shows two sets of numbers. e sure to read each set from the correct direction. 168 UNIT 9 Geometry R To measure an angle using a protractor, line up 0 with one ray of the angle. 15 Read the problem. Write your answer to each part. 9 Hana is baking bread. She is using a kitchen timer that has a circle for a dial. One hand of the timer points to 0. The other hand moves to mark the amount of time. She sets the dial for 25 minutes, as shown below min 15 min 30 min Part Use a protractor to find the measure of the angle the timer is set to. nswer Part fter 5 minutes, Hana checks on the bread. The hand that measures time has moved 30 closer to 0. What is the measure of the angle formed by the hand at 0 and the hand that tells how much time is left? Explain how you found your answer. Imagine drawing another ray to show the angle of the timer after 5 minutes has passed. How is this angle related to the original angle? The ontinental Press, Inc. UPLITING THIS MTERIL IS ILLEGL.
