1 UNIVERSITY OF ULSTER LIBRARY BIOSIS Previews Backfile Coverage The backfile of BIOSIS Previews, covering the years 1969 to 2008, is available on the ISI Web of Knowledge platform It is a major source of information in the biological sciences and includes the following areas: Botany, Zoology and Microbiology Biomedicine, Agriculture, Pharmacology and Ecology Medicine, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Bioengineering and Biotechnology The information in the database is taken from a range of publication types including journals, books, meeting and patents The database is not full text - it will provide you with bibliographic information such as the author, title of the article, the journal it was published in, volume, part, pages and year of publication You will need to click on the UU Find It button, displayed on each result, to check if a link to the full text is available Access Log on to the Portal at portalulsteracuk Click on the Learning Resources tab Click on the Databases link, displayed under Key Services, on the right hand side of the screen Click on B on the A-Z list Scroll down to BIOSIS Previews backfile Click on the name of the database to log on Click on Proceed Selecting your database To search the BIOSIS Previews database, click on the Select a Database tab at the top of the screen
2 Click on BIOSIS Previews from the databases listed Searching This is the BIOSIS Previews search screen: Enter your search term(s) into the search boxes Select the field (area within the record) that you want to search in For example: Topic to search for your terms (individual words or phrases) in the title, abstract and keywords of a record Title to search for your terms only in the title of the record Author enter the surname followed by a space, then the first initial and an asterisk eg chandler j* Publication Name use the Publication Name Index to help locate the publication Select Publication Name from the drop down menu and click on the search aid icon as illustrated: Page 2
3 You can also use the drop down menu to limit your search by language eg English and by document type eg article Please note that to apply these limits you simply highlight your preferred limit from the list displayed This will not move your highlighted limit into the search box it will remain in the list but will be applied to your search To limit your search to a range of years scroll to the Current Limits displayed at the bottom of the search screen and make your selection Search Hints Combining terms: combine search terms using AND, OR, NOT and SAME Use AND to specify that both terms must appear in each record found, for example: antibiotic and seaweed Use OR to specify that either or both terms must appear in each record found, for example: antibiotic or antiviral Page 3
4 Use NOT to search for one term but not another, for example: cjd NOT bse will find records which include the term cjd but not the term bse SAME will find records where all your terms are contained in the same sentence, for example: phosphorus same soil Phrases: To search for an exact phrase use quotation marks around the phrase For example, heavy metals Hyphens: Search for hyphenated words and phrases by entering the terms with a hyphen For example, protein-rich will find records containing the phrase protein rich and the phrase protein-rich Wildcards:? represents one letter in a word eg wom?n will find records for both women and woman * represents a number of letters at the end of a word, so disease* will find records for disease, diseases and diseased $ The dollar sign represents zero or one character It is useful for finding both the British and American spellings of the same word eg tumo$r will search for records containing tumour or tumor Displaying Results The search results are displayed in brief format providing title, author and source details They are sorted by publication date with the most recent being listed first You can redisplay these by relevancy click on the Sort by: drop down menu displayed on the right side of the screen and click on Relevance Page 4
5 Click on the title of the document highlighted in blue for the full record which contains the publication details (for example, title of journal article, authors of article, name of journal that the article is published in, year of publication, volume, part number and page details) plus an abstract (summary) Additional information including Major Concepts (which identify the main focus of the article) and Taxonomic Data will be displayed here To return to your list of results from within the full record click on Back to results list If available, click on the Full Text link to link directly to the full text of the document required You can also click on the UU Find It button to check if the Library provides access to the document you need You may be directed to an electronic journal or database where you can view the full text or to holdings information in the Library Catalogue Click on the link to the option you wish to use If no full text is available, either electronically or in print format, it may be possible for you to obtain the document using our Document Delivery service Ask Library staff about this Refining Results To the left of the Results list you will see the Refine Results panel From within this panel you can select one or more options to refine your search results, thus reducing the number of results Page 5
6 displayed You can refine your search by options such as major concepts, document types, authors and source titles Scientific Web Plus This is a science focused search engine which allows you to view additional web sites on your search terms Marking Records From the Results screen you can mark (select) any records which you think might be useful You can later print, save, or export these To mark records: 1 Tick the check box to the left of each record you find relevant 2 When you have finished click on the Add to Marked List button 3 Then click on the Marked List button displayed at the top of the page Printing/ /Saving/Exporting This will bring you to the BIOSIS Previews Marked Records page From here you can output your records by , print, saving or export Step 1 Page 6
7 Select the fields (sections of the record) that you want to output Some of these are automatically selected for you such as the author, title and source fields You may wish to additionally select, for example, the abstract field by ticking the check box next to it Step 2 Select one of the following output options - Format for Print - Choose either Field Tagged or Bibliographic A field tagged record looks like this: A bibliographic record looks like this: Click on Format for Print and then select the print option from the File drop down menu Save to File - Select HTML from the drop-down menu and then click on Save to File Page 7
8 To export records to RefWorks, click on Other Reference Software from the drop-down menu and then on Save to File You should then save the file as a text file** - Enter your chosen address and click on the button Please remember that you will not be outputting the full-text when you use any of the four options above To save, print or a full-text article you need to do this when you are viewing the article on the screen Search History Click on the Search History button, at the top of the screen, to view a list of the searches that you have carried out during the session From this screen you can view search results, combine your search sets together, save search histories, delete search sets or open previously saved search histories Help Help on using BIOSIS Previews is available from the Help link displayed in the top right corner of the screen Exiting To exit click on the Log Out button in the top right hand corner of the screen **To view the BIOSIS Previews records in RefWorks, log on to the RefWorks database From the References menu select Import Page 8
9 Select ISI (Institute for Scientific Information) as the Import Filter/ Data Source and BIOSIS as the Database Browse for your BIOSIS Previews text file and click on Import You can then view the imported records in RefWorks Other databases: As our access to BIOSIS Previews contains the backfile up to 2008 you will need to use other Library databases to search for current information Databases you should consider include: ISI Web of Knowledge: Web of Science with Conference Proceedings Medline (Ovid SP version) Embase CSA Illumina All of these can be accessed from the Learning Resources tab on the Portal Page 9
