4 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY This white paper is intended for D7.1 Thumbnail Server users. It explains the step by step procedure to install and configure the Thumbnail Server on a distributed Content Server environment. With this setup, Thumbnail Server users can achieve the Thumbnail Server failover on a distributed Content Server environment. This document covers the following points. 1. Installing two Thumbnail server in Distributed Content server. 2. Configuring two Thumbnail server against the same logical repository. 3. Manual steps to setup the Thumbnail server in distributed environment. AUDIENCE This white paper is intended for EMC customers, partners, internal developers and engineers. It is organized in a set of steps that are easy to follow. ABBREVIATION Special terms, abbreviations and acronyms that may appear in this guide are defined below. 1. CS Content Server. 2. CTS Content Transformation Server. 3. TS Thumbnail Server. 4. DA Documentum Administrator. 5. DQL Documentum Query Language. PRE REQUISITES 1. Setup a distributed content server environment in which one docbase is served by two Content Servers namely primary and secondary (created through cfsconfigurationprogram) content servers. These two communicate each other through dm_surrogateget method. Please follow the Content Server documentation for the setup. 2. Setup two CTS machines namely primary and secondary which needs to be configured to primary and secondary CS respectively. Please follow the D7.1 CTS documentation for the setup. 6 THUMBNAIL SERVER INSTALLATION AND CONFIGURATION IN PRIMARY CS Follow the Installing and configuring Thumbnail Server on Windows section from tserver_7.1_relnotes.pdf from 7.1 CTS product documentation. Since this is a distributed content server, make sure you choose the primary server config object in the thumbnail server configuration. 6

Since this is a distributed content server, make sure you choose the secondary server config object in the thumbnail server configuration. 7

8 STEPS TO FOLLOW TO SETUP THUMBNAIL SERVER IN DISTRIBUTED CS ENVIRONMENT 1. Login into secondary thumbnail server machine and create a folder namely thumbnail_store_02 under the data folder Example, C:\Documentum\data\distributed\distcs2_globalrcs\globalrcs\thumbnail_store_02 8

9 2. Login into Secondary CS using DA by choosing the secondary content server in the login page of DA. 9

10 3. Navigate to Administration->Storage Management->Storage from left hand tree view. 10

11 4. Create a location called thumbnail_location using File -> New ->Location. Set the newly created folder (C:\Documentum\data\distributed\distcs2_globalrcs\globalrcs\thumbnail_store_02 ) as the path for the location. 5. Create a thumbnail file store called thumbnail_store2 by pointing the newly created thumbnail location and select Media type as ThumbnailContent and set the base URL as MACHINE IP:8081/thumbsrv/getThumbnail? 11

13 6. Open to the properties of thumbnail_store2. 7. Set the dm_surrogateget method is selected against SurrogateGet Method. 13

14 8. Create a distributed thumbnail store using DQL and make sure that the media_type is set to 1 while creating the distributed thumbnail store create dm_distributedstore object set name='dist_thumbnailstore' set media_type =1 14

15 9. Now check whether the newly created distributed thumbnail store is listed under Administration->Storage Management->Storage page in DA. 15

16 10. Right click on newly created distributed thumbnail store and select Properties. 11. Set dm_surrogateget against Get Method and Check the Fetch Content Locally Only checkbox. 16

17 Click on Componenets tab and add both the thumbnail stores (one created for Primary server and one created for secondary server). 12. Click on Ok. 17

18 13. Navigate to Administration->basic configuration->content Server and Open the properties of secondary CS. Then add the primary thumbnail store in the far store tab. 14. Logout from DA and Login again into DA using primary content server. 18

19 15. Navigate to Administration->Storage Management->Storage and set the dm_surrogateget method in primary thumbnail store s properties. 19

20 16. Go to Administration->basic configuration->content Servers. Open the properties of primary CS. Then add the secondary thumbnail store in the far store tab. 20

21 17. Navigate to Administration->Formats and type jpeg in the search box (right top corner) and press enter. 21

22 18. Open the properties of jpeg_th, jpeg_story, jpeg_lres formats from the search list and set the Default Storage value to the newly created distributed thumbnail store (dist_thumbnailstore). 19. Logout from DA and the restart the both Content Server machine and Thumbnail Servers. 22

23 TEST FOR DISTRIBUTED THUMBNAIL SERVER 1. Take two DA session and login into first DA for using primary content server and second DA using secondary content server. 2. Import a jpeg file in the primary CS DA. (Make sure that you create a new cabinet and then import) 3. Thumbnail should be generated by CTS machine and it will be visible on both primary CS DA and secondary CS DA. 4. Import a jpeg file in the secondary CS DA.(Make sure that you create a new cabinet and then import). 5. Thumbnail should be generated by CTS machine and it will be visible in both primary and secondary CS DA. 6. Go to the physical location of both primary and secondary Thumbnail Server and check that the thumbnails for the asset imported through both primary and secondary CS are available. Note: You can notice that the moment you access the primary thumbnails in secondary CS, The thumbnails gets copied to secondary thumbnails server physical location using dm_surragetget method. CONCLUSION This white paper provides the complete procedure of setting up Thumbnail Server in distributed environment. With this setup, thumbnails for the asset imported through both the Content Server machines can be displayed by both the Thumbnail Servers. So even if one Thumbnail server goes down, then the other Thumbnail Server can display the thumbnails to the user. 23
