1 Blogging Basics Using WordPress What is WordPress? Instructor Christina Hills WordPress is free open source blog publishing software. It is the perfect platform for podcasting. 4 What is a "Post? A 'Post' is the blog part of your website. It has the post date and the post author. This is the information that gets pushed out via Really Simple Syndication (RSS). It's on a post that you want to put your podcast. Figure 5) A WordPress "Post" 4

6 What is a "Page? A 'page' is considered to have content that will not change. It usually does not have any comments, but it can have a page hierarchy. Page content does not go out to the RSS feed. Figure 7) A WordPress "Page" 6

It is an easy way to get your material from your blog or podcast distributed out to people. People can use either a feed reader, or an RSS aggregator to read your feed. If you see those little buttons (sometimes orange RSS or XML) on web pages, those are the XML feeds to the blogs. You can use them to get updates when people post to their blog or podcasts. You can also use them to get news feeds from sites such as the New York Times, CNN, Fox News, or movie and entertainment sites. Figure 24) RSS Feed Links/Buttons 17

18 With RSS, the information you want comes to you the user, instead of you needing to go to each website or blog for new content. It's the RSS feed that sends out the podcast to your subscribers. With RSS the user is in control. Examples of Feed Readers: Figure 25) Firefox view of Feed 18

26 Simple Steps to Create a Podcast Episode 1) Record your audio as a wave file (.wav) (Mixit) You can record a teleseminar Or you can use your computer and a microphone and record your podcast episode. 2) Edit your audio if you want (in the.wav format) (Mixit) i.e. coughs, sniffles etc. (this could be outsourced) 3) Get Your Audio in a.mp3 format Using any method you have, make sure you convert your.wav file to.mp3. But always keep a copy of it in.wav in itunes on your desktop you can convert your.wav file to.mp3 4) Tag it in itunes (Tagit) Tag your podcast in itunes and put in album art for the episode of your podcast. 5) Upload your.mp3 file to a server on the Internet (Host it) Upload that.mp3 file to Amazon AWS servers using the Firefox plug-in or any other FTP program. (cyberduck.ch is a program for Mac people) (Hostit) 6) Make a post on your podcast blog and link the URL of your.mp3 (free podcast) (Servit) Or for a paid podcast, add the listing to premium cast. Congrats! Your podcast episode is done! 26
