CREATING YOUR SOUNDCLOUD ACCOUNT Features: Steps: Create an account for FREE Record your voice: online or with a mobile Android or ipad/iphone device, or live on the web site. Hosting site for your audio: You can Record and/or Upload your own recordings, so this will host the mp3 recordings you make with Audacity (for instance). They indicate that they also support the file types: AIFF, WAVE, OGG, MP2, AAC, AMR, and WMA Social: Soundcloud is a social sound platform which hosts music and audio which can then be shared privately with friends or publicly on your blog, website, and social network sites (Twitter, tumblr, Facebook, Foursquare). Copyright: Be sure to observe copyright! Make sure you do not upload copyright or commercial music files, only your own original recordings. 1. Create your free account requires an address, username you create, and a password. 2. Login with your and username. Note: you may see a page saying you have not uploaded any recordings. 2 3. Start by clicking on HOME Home contains two sections: Stream: Once you have created or uploaded some recordings, they will appear on your Stream tab. You can play them directly from this page to listen to them. Once you record or upload audio, it will be on this Stream page. It will look something like this: More about this and the menu options after you make your first recording! II. RECORDING YOUR FIRST AUDIO IN SOUNDCLOUD (13 steps) Ready to make your first sample recording! You will need to have a microphone! 1. Click on the Upload button on the menubar 2. Click on Start new recording Note: that you will see how many minutes you available for FREE hosting indicated below when you prepare to record or upload. 3 3. Have your script ready, or practice what you want to record for this first time. Hi, this is my first recording. I am trying out this SoundRecording Program. Click on the REC button. You may see the small Adobe Flash Player Settings window appear. Click on the circle by Allow. 4. When you are ready, click the REC button and start speaking into your mic. You will see the wave form appear as you talk. ***Position your mic to the side and a bit below your mouth so it doesn t catch your phh and bhh breath sounds. Press the Square to stop the recording. 5. Play it and decide if you want to upload this recording into your account, or Start over. You can delete it later as well. 6. When you click on upload your recording you will see the uploading bar move along indicating the number of MB. *While this is happening you can click in the Title area to put in your own title. 7. Once you enter your title, the web link appears immediately below it. Here it shows: mo for our demo (deleted). Enter in the additional information, Type, Genre, and settings for the file. 8. 4 9. Upload an image for your recording 10. Indicate the type and Genre SKIP this step for now, but it s fun to do later (follow copyright!) For Genre you might put: Audio 11. Settings: Select Private *Select Demo or Work in Progress 12. Advanced settings: Leave this as it is right now. 13. Click on Save (at the bottom) and it will now take you to your uploaded file. Click on it to play and listen to it. You can delete it, add it to a set, or share it with a group. 14. The link (URL) to your recording is at the top of the web browser page. Remember you made it private so only you can hear it right now. (Good thing!). Listen to your sample recording. 15. 5 III. More details about the menus and settings A. The SETTINGS menu Click on the drop- down arrow next to your username or image. This takes you to your: Profile, Playlists, Groups, Who to follow, Go Pro, Stats, and Tracks PROFILE PLAYLISTS GROUPS Uncheck the box! And then Save Group if you created one. WHO TO FOLLOW Check with your teacher to see if you should follow anyone, or skip this. Go Pro is a $$$Paid account. STATS this will show you how many times your recording has been listened to. This graph shows how many listened to the different recordings we have posted. 1. You can upload an image such as an avatar (not a picture of yourself). 2. You can enter a little information about the content you will be recording. Playlists: This will show a listing of any playlists you created, and how many tracks are in the playlist. Create a new playlist and give it a name. Select private until you are ready to share it. Selecting public means you are following all the copyright rules and license information (highlighted later in this document). You can create a group (or your teacher might create one for your entire class). You can create a name for the group, short description, and add an image. Make sure you UNCHECK the box Automatically approve tracks added to this group to make sure you don t have someone you don t know add something If your teacher has created an account and posted audio, you could choose to follow their audio posts. 6 TRACKS this will show how many FREE minutes of recording time you have left, and shows how long each recording is. To get more minutes you have to purchase a Pro account. B. SHARING, linking to, embedding your audio MENU When you click the Share icon you will have 3 options: Share Embed Message SHARE 1. gives you the URL (web address to the recording) 2. gives links to post it to a social media site 3. the link to someone EMBED This will give you the: embed code, or Wordpress code, to post it to a blog or web site (like Weebly or Edublog) page and shows a preview of what it will look like. MESSAGE Enables a message with the link to your recording to someone with a SoundCloud user account. SoundCloud Tutorial, June 2015 Carolyn J. McCarthy 6

7 C. EDITING Edit This has 3 sections - Basic Info Metadata Permissions DELETE files In Basic Info can edit the title of the recording, add or edit the image, tag and description. Make the track private or public. NOTE: If you make it public *** be sure to check the Terms of Use and Copyright Information before uploading an audio track. this is the licensing section. Your choices are the All Rights Reserved (requires purchase of a link), or Creative Commons this enables playback outside of SoundCloud, and the code to embed your track is displayed. The track is not downloadable, and cannot be included in an RSS feed to be subscribed to. Remember you can go to your Home- Stream list or Tracks list and choose to deleteindividual audio files. D. UPLOADING YOUR AUDIO RECORDINGS TO SOUNDCLOUD You may have made your recordings using another program such as Audacity. To embed or insert a hyperlink to your own blog, wordpress, or other webpage, you will need to have a HOST for your audio file on the web. SoundCloud is a FREE hosting site. Note: This is to host your own creative and original recordings, not for copyright songs or content. Select the Upload menu Click on the Choose file to Upload button. 8 It will open a window to your computer files. You will need to locate the file to upload. It should be a supported file format: We support AIFF, WAVE (WAV), FLAC, ALAC, OGG, MP2, MP3, AAC, AMR, and WMA files. The maximum file size is 5GB. Add the Basic Info, Metadata, and Permissions once it is uploaded (see section C. Editing above) Please note, if your sound is over 6 hours and 45 minutes long, our system will not be able to process it. You can cancel it or delete it afterward. E. Home Explore menu This part of the Home menu brings up a lot of options for music, audio books, news, and more. Click on the drop- down arrow next to Trending Music to see different genre of audio recordings that have been uploaded or recorded and shared in SoundCloud. NOTE: These are not necessarily all appropriate for younger audiences! Check with your instructor. IV. TERMS OF USE The full terms of use are available on the SoundCloud site. Below are some highlights to be aware of: The SoundCloud licenses are conditional upon your strict compliance with these Terms of Use and our Community Guidelines, including, without limitation, the following: o You must not copy, rip or capture, or attempt to copy, rip or capture, any audio Content from the Platform or any part of the Platform, other than by means of download in circumstances where the relevant Uploader has SoundCloud Tutorial, June 2015 Carolyn J. 9 elected to permit downloads of the relevant item of Content. o o o You must not adapt, copy, republish, make available or otherwise communicate to the public, display, perform, transfer, share, distribute or otherwise use or exploit any Content on or from the Platform, except (i) where such Content is Your Content, or (ii) as permitted under these Terms of Use, and within the parameters set by the Uploader (for example, under the terms of Creative Commons licences selected by the Uploader). You must not use any Content (other than Your Content) in any way that is designed to create a separate content service or that replicates any part of the Platform offering. You must not employ scraping or similar techniques to aggregate, repurpose, republish or otherwise make use of any Content V. LINKING TO YOUR AUDIO RECORDING Your username will be used as part of the URL link for all of your sound recordings. For example, my username is 21things so the link to my recordings will be /name of recording. The easiest way to get the link is to go to the Share setting and copy the link or embed code.
