1 Search & Rescue Map Specifications and Production Workflows About The Search & Rescue map product and production procedures discussed in this document can be utilized to support search, rescue, and relief efforts within a specified disaster zone anywhere in the United States. Several different types of maps will be available including a Search Grid Summary Map which will provide a summary of the disaster area and will illustrate the different stages of search operations within each zone. Also included is a Ground Search Map which will be utilized for any ground search operations. The last two map products, Water and Air Search Maps, will be utilized in searches over air and water surfaces. The map layout and specifications of these last two map products are essentially the same, except for a difference in the map title. Map documents have been created for the production of these Search & Rescue maps. These templates were built to take advantage of the PLTS for ArcGIS Map Production System-Atlas cartographic tools. This document provides detailed steps for creation of these different map products using MPS-Atlas. Map Specifications Search Grid Summary Map Page Size: 34 x 44 (printed on E size paper) Area of Interest: 2-minute grid point feature class, defined by location of disaster area (user-defined) Scale: small scale (user-defined depending on size of search area) Map Elements: Detailed inset map Air Search Map Page Size: 14 x 22 (printed on C size paper) Area of Interest: 2-minute grid feature class Scale: Local View = 1:17,000; Regional View = 1:10 mil; Overview Map = 1:185,000 Map Elements: Overview Map, Index Map Ground Search Map Page Size: 34 x 44 (printed on E size paper) Area of Interest: 30-second grid feature class Scale: 1:2,400 Map Elements: Overview Map, Index Map Water Search Map Page Size: 14 x 22 (printed on C size paper) Area of Interest: 2-minute grid feature class Scale: Local View = 1:17,000; Regional View = 1:10 mil; Overview Map = 1:185,000 Map Elements: Overview Map, Index Map

2 Setup Procedures One-Time Data Setup Create a 2-minute grid point/centroid feature class from the 2-minute grid polygon feature class. 1. Open ArcCatalog. 2. Open ArcToolbox. 3. Run the Feature to Point tool from the Data Management Tools > Features toolbox. 4. Input Features = US 2-minute grid feature class. 5. Output Feature Class = US 2-minute point feature class. 6. Click OK. 7. Add the below coded value domains to the GDB: 0 - Not Started % Complete 26 50% Complete 51 75% Complete 76 99% Complete 100% Complete Search Efforts Terminated All search status layer symbology is driven by this new point feature class and NOT the polygon grid feature class. The 2-minute grid polygon feature class simply becomes a reference layer.

3 Database Setup 1. From your working geodatabase determine your disaster area of interest and export the appropriate 2-minute point and polygon features to a new project geodatabase (personal or file). 2. These new 2-minute point and polygon feature classes will drive the symbology for all search maps listed below. Creating these two, project specific, 2-min grid feature classes will allow you to easily distribute and archive each project geodatabase for a specific event. 3. User will need to add a field to the 30-second grid feature class called Cell_Name which will be used for naming your individual map sheets on your Ground Search Maps. This will also be used for the title dynamic text. This is necessary because there are no other descriptive identifiers in the 30-second grid feature class to generate your map series from. Add a new field called Cell_Name to the 30-second grid feature class and launch the Field Calculator. Load the VB expression file supplied on the PLTS for ArcGIS Mapping Agency Solution sample DVD (30Second_Cell_Name_Expression.cal) to populate the correct formatted name. Search Grid Summary Map - Production Procedures 1. Open the Search&Rescue_SearchGridSummaryMap.mxd. 2. Zoom to appropriate disaster area location. 3. Set 2-minute layer datasources to the new feature classes in the project geodatabase. 4. Add the PLTS Editing Environment toolbar. 5. Start an edit session by clicking PLTS Start Editing button. 6. Click the PLTS Target tab in ArcMap Table of Contents. 7. Click the 2-Minute Point Edit Layer to set as the feature class to you will be editing. 8. Click the PLTS Selection tab in ArcMap Table of Contents. 9. Use the PLTS Select Tool on the PLTS Editing Environment toolbar. 10. Drag and drop to select one OR a group of 2-minute points you want to change the search status of. 11. On the PLTS Selection tab you can now modify any of the search status fields (GS_SearchStatus, WS_SearchStatus, AS_SearchStatus) and set the appropriate % complete level. 12. When you have set the field attributes appropriately, click the Apply button on the PLTS Selection tab. Note: if you have multiple 2-minute points features selected these changes will be applied to all. 13. Periodically click the Save Edits button on the PLTS Editing Environment toolbar to save edits. 14. When you are done editing, click the Stop Editing button on the PLTS Editing Environment toolbar to end you edit session.

4 Ground Search Map - Production Procedures 1. Open Ground Search Map MXD 2. On MPS-Atlas tab, right click and select Build Map Series and setup your map series properties by using the information in the below screenshots. 3. Choose a Name for your map series. 4. Click Next. 5. Set Area of Interest options as shown below. For Feature Layer choose the 30-second grid feature class and for Name Field select the appropriate name. Click the Select Features button. Note: You can also pre-select your appropriate grid feature ahead of time and those will already appear populated in the dialog box.

5 6. The Select Features window appears allowing you to select the 30-second grid features you want in your map series. 7. Click OK.

6 8. Selected features will appear in the dialog box 9. Click Next. 10. Set Storage settings as shown below. 11. Click Next. 12. Set Map Sheet Properties as shown below.

7 13. Click Next. 14. Set Rotation properties as shown below. 15. Click Next. 16. Set Spatial Reference properties as shown below.

8 17. Click Next. 18. Set Buffer properties as shown below. 19. Click Next. 20. Set Scale and Extent properties as shown below.

9 21. Click Next. 22. Set Dynamic Definition Query properties as shown below. 23. Click Finish. The map series will be created.

10 Air and Water Search Map - Production Procedures 1. Open the Search&Rescue_AirSearchMap.mxd or the Seach&Rescue_WateSearchMap.mxd. 2. On MPS-Atlas tab, right click and select Build Map Series and setup your map series properties by using the information in the below screenshots. 3. Choose a Name for your map series. 4. Click Next. 5. Set Area of Interest options as shown below. For Feature Layer choose the 30-second grid feature class and for Name Field select the appropriate name. Click the Select Features button. Note: You can also pre-select your appropriate grid feature ahead of time and those will already appear populated in the dialog box.
