2 What are Data Driven Pages? Data Driven Pages Workflow Creating an Index Feature Preparing a Layout Exporting a Map Series Tips and Tricks (If Time Allows) 2

3 Data Driven Pages are a quick & easy way to create a series of layout pages from a single map document Four Required Elements Data Frame Index Feature (does not need to be on) Name Field (names your pages) Sort Field (order pages will be exported in PDF) Three Optional Elements Rotation-rotates map (ex. Strip map) Spatial Reference-can be set to show more than one spatial reference Page Number-define a page number Extent 3

4 Uses an Index Layer or Feature Layer to Zoom to and Display/Update Specific Information in a Series of Maps, such as: Map Locator North Arrow (if rotation is set) Scale bar Dynamic Text (Page name, number, etc.) Layers containing a dynamic query (Page Definition) Beneficial If You Create: Mapbooks Workplan maps Construction maps Any set of maps that will be given to someone for reference 4

5 Determine Your Index Layer Create one if needed Set Up the Data Driven Pages Dialog Box Set Up Your Print and Page Properties Create Your Map Layout Include dynamic text and map elements, for example: Scale bar Locator map Page name Date Export Your Map Series 5

6 Index Feature is a Feature That Contains Areas of Interest You Want to Show in a Series of Maps Polygon, line, or point Create an Index Feature by Using an Existing Feature or Creating a New One Two Geoprocessing Tools Available to Help Create an Index Feature Grid Index Features creates a grid of rectangular polygon features Can be set to only create polygon features that intersect an existing feature Strip Map Index Features creates a grid of rectangular polygon features that follow a single linear feature or group of linear features Modify an the index feature to include more information by: Joining to another feature Calculating adjacent fields Adding a spatial reference (for maps in different zones) Adding a rotation (adding a True North) 6

9 Determine Orientation & Size In most cases, a landscape page format will allow for a larger map area Configure Paper/Page Settings In Layout View the shadow around your map shows the size it will print Checking Use Printer Paper Settings option will ensure map size is the same size as print size NOTE: Scale Map Elements proportionally to changes in Page Size will distort graphics & logos if checked after layout is constructed 9

11 Layout is a Collection of Map Elements Organized & Designed for Map Printing Use Your Guides in Layout View to Align Your Elements Evenly Key Elements Neatline/frame Neatline should be thickest on the outside then thinner as you go inward Locator data frame Reference locator data frame maps are very basic & contain useful location information Many different options for extent indicator Scale bar/text North arrow Map Title Choose a font that is clear 11

12 Descriptive/Dynamic Text Map information (authored by, source) Production date Disclaimer Other Elements Object Table, Graphics. etc. Picture Save image as part of document to ensure path stays connected Symbol Legend Legends should be organized in order of scale (largest to smallest) Transparency setting is located under Data Frame properties Legend title is not always necessary New in 10.1 New Legend Wizard Legend is dynamic and can show features that are only visible in the current extent or that are in the current index feature extent (Active Data Driven Page) Access dynamic elements and text by using the Insert tab In the top ribbon 12

14 Export Map to PDF Format General tab-resolution & Raster Output Format tab-image & Picture Quality Embed fonts for PDF format Pages Tab-Select Pages for Export Export Pages As (single or multiple PDF file with file naming options) Show Selection Symbology is checked by default uncheck prior to printing Security Tab-Enable PDF Security Advanced Tab Feature attributes can now be read in Adobe 6.0 or higher Layers and Attributes (Layers only for with feature attributes) Export Map Georeference Information 14
