5 1 Welcome Thank you for purchasing the Protege DIN Rail 2A Intelligent Power Supply by Integrated Control Technology. The Protege System is an advanced technology security system designed to provide integration with building automation, apartment complex control and HVAC in one flexible package. Communication is over a proprietary high speed protocol across an encrypted local area network and AES Encrypted Proprietary RS-485 module network. Using modular-based hardware design, system installers have the flexibility to accommodate any installation whether it's small, large, residential or commercial. The Intelligent Power Supply provides 12VDC power suited to powering security, access control or automation devices along with large numbers of Protege network powered modules. The Intelligent Power Supply allows for simple and powerful monitoring of supply currents and voltages. Flexible module network architecture allows large numbers of modules to be connected to the RS-485 module network. Up to 250 modules can be connected to the Protege system in any combination to the network, over a distance of up to 900M (3000ft). Further span can be achieved with the use of a network repeater module. Locking a network prevents the removal, substitution or addition of modules to the module network effectively preventing any tampering with the system. 6 2 Mounting The Intelligent Power Supply is designed to mount on standard DIN Rail either in dedicated DIN cabinets or generic DIN Rail mounting strip. A section of this DIN Rail strip has been provided as a mounting option. When installing the Intelligent Power Supply ensure that there is adequate clearance around all sides of the device and that air flow to the vents of the unit is not restricted. It is recommended to install the Intelligent Power Supply in a location that will facilitate easy access for wiring. It is also recommended that the Intelligent Power Supply is installed in electrical rooms, communication equipment rooms, closets or in an accessible area of the ceiling. 1. Hook the lower tabs under the bottom edge of the DIN Rail. 2. Push the Intelligent Power Supply against the DIN Rail mount until the upper tab clips over the upper rail. 2.1 Removal The Intelligent Power Supply can be removed from the DIN Rail mount using the following steps: 1. Insert a flat blade screwdriver into the hole in the tab at the top of the Intelligent Power Supply. 2. Lever the tab up and rotate the unit off the DIN Rail mount. 2.2 Cabinet Tamper Switch The enclosure tamper input signals to the monitoring station or remote computer that the Intelligent Power Supply enclosure has been opened. The tamper input switch should be mounted into the steel bracket provided and connected to the tamper connection terminal and the V- terminal as shown below. 7 3 AC Power Supply The Intelligent Power Supply shall be supplied by a dedicated electrical power source rated for a minimum 10Amp load and have a dedicated circuit breaker. Do not use a switch controlled breaker or a switched electrical point to supply electrical power. Connect the primary of a 16 to 16.5 VAC, 50-60Hz, 40VA or greater transformer to the electrical circuit and run the secondary to the AC Input on the Intelligent Power Supply terminals. Transformer B+ B- B+ B- AC AC Mains Input AC Power Connection Specific regional regulations may allow the transformer to be mounted inside the cabinet enclosure. In this case wire the electrical circuit to the electrical termination point inside the cabinet enclosure and the secondary wires of the transformer to the AC Input on the Intelligent Power Supply. The earth wire shall be routed to the terminal on the Intelligent Power Supply when using an internal transformer. Warning: This installation should be made by qualified service personnel and should conform to all local codes and in accordance with the National Electrical Codes (NEC US) or the Canadian Electrical Codes (CEC Canada). Termination of wiring to the Intelligent Power Supply while power is applied or the battery is connected may cause serious damage to the Intelligent Power Supply and will VOID ALL WARRANTIES OR GUARANTEES. Power the unit only after all wiring, configuration and jumper settings are completed. Extra care must be taken when wiring the AC inputs. 8 4 Backup Battery It is recommended that a minimum of a 7Ah battery is used as the main backup battery. From the accessory bag provided, connect the RED and BLACK battery termination wires to the B+ and B- plugs. Connect the spade terminals to the battery as shown below. Connection of the battery in reverse will not damage the Power Supply but will cause the battery fuse (6A resettable fuse) to open, requiring resetting by removal of all connections to the B+ and B- plugs for approximately 30 seconds. An additional pluggable connector allowing for the use of an alternative or any additional backup battery(s) is located next to the standard backup battery connector. The connections of this extra connector are in parallel with the standard connector. B+ B- B- B+ AC AC - + Gel Cell Backup Ba ery Battery Connection Warning: Only attach standard lead acid batteries. Do not connect the battery wires or B+ and B- plugs of the Power Supply to any other ancillary device (siren, lock or mag clamp etc). An incorrect connection may cause erroneous faults or serious damage to the Power Supply and will VOID ALL WARRANTIES OR GUARANTEES. The battery test procedure uses a special algorithm to prevent deep discharge and increase battery endurance. A dynamic battery test is performed every ten minutes when mains power is present and a battery condition alarm will be generated if the battery is either disconnected or shows poor capacity. Battery fault conditions will activate the battery trouble zone associated with the address assigned to the Power Supply. In addition to the dynamic battery test procedure, the Power Supply performs a battery presence test every 60 seconds, which determines whether the presence of a backup battery is detected. Similarly, a battery condition alarm will be generated and the battery trouble zone associated with the address assigned to the Power Supply will also be activated. 8 PRT-PSU-DIN-2A Protege DIN Rail 2A Intelligent Power Supply Installation Manual January 2013

9 5 Encrypted Module Network The Intelligent Power Supply incorporates encrypted RS-485 communications technology. Network power is supplied by the N+ and N- terminals. N+ N- NA NB Network communications input from the Protege Integrated System Controller or previous Protege module Standard Communications Connection Connection of the communications and network power should be performed according to the diagram shown. It is important that the N+ network communications power be 12VDC supplied from an independent battery backed power supply unit or a networked module capable of supplying the required voltage to all devices on the RS-485 network. Connections from more than one 12V supply may cause failure or damage to the Intelligent Power Supply or device supplying network power. The 330 Ohm EOL (End of Line) resistor provided in the accessory bag MUST be inserted between the NA and NB terminals of the FIRST and LAST modules on the RS-485 network. 11 + - 6 Output Load Connection The Intelligent Power Supply provides two sets of 12VDC output terminals, V1+ and V2+. Both V1+ and V2+ outputs are individually fused. i A maximum current output of 1.0 Amps at 12VDC can be provided across each output at any one time. However, if a single current output of 2.0 Amps is required, then both outputs need to be connected together in parallel. When any inductive load including electric locking devices is powered by the Intelligent Power Supply, a reverse EMF protection diode must be placed across the positive (V1+ or V2+) and negative (V-) terminals at the device. 12VDC Electric Locking Device IN4007 Diode V2+ V- V1+ V- 12VDC OUTPUT 2 12VDC OUTPUT 1 Example Output Load Connection i The 1N4007 diode shown MUST be installed across the + and terminals of any inductive load such as electric locks, magnetic or motorized devices. 6.1 Output Current Influence on Output Load Operation In addition to the comprehensive front panel diagnostic indicators, the following table illustrates how the total output current drawn from the Power Supply will influence the operation of the V1 and V2 Outputs. 12 6.2 Core Temperature on Output Load Operation In addition to the comprehensive front panel diagnostic indicators, the following table illustrates how the core temperature of the PSU will influence the operation of the V1 and V2 Outputs. 13 7 Inputs (Zones) The Intelligent Power Supply has no physical input (zone) connections. The Intelligent Power Supply monitors 8 trouble inputs used to report trouble conditions. A trouble input is in most cases not physically connected with an input in to the Intelligent Power Supply; rather it is related to a status condition within the system. For example a module communication fault causes a trouble input to open as a result of the communication failure. 7.1 Trouble Inputs Each Intelligent Power Supply can monitor up to 8 trouble inputs. Trouble inputs are used to monitor the status of the Intelligent Power Supply and in most cases are not physically connected to an external input. The following table details the trouble inputs that are configured in the system and the trouble type and group that they activate. This means that all programming, trouble input and PGM output information is stored in and reported by the Analog Expander records when programming via the Protege Alphanumeric LCD Keypad or Protege software. 14 8 Outputs The Intelligent Power Supply has 2 outputs that can operate as either programmable outputs (PGMs) or as predefined status outputs, depending on the network status of the module on the Protege system. 8.1 Online Mode Upon successfully completing the initial registration with any Protege System Controller, the outputs of the Intelligent Power Supply operate in Online Mode. The module will then continue to operate in online mode until a firmware update is carried out. While in online mode, the 2 outputs function as programmable outputs (PGMs) and can be used to activate bell sirens, lighting circuits, door locks, relay accessory products and other automation points. PGM Outputs The 2 PGM Outputs each have a Solid State relay. The connection example below shows the control of an external LED indicator. LED 1K5 OHM V2+ V- V1+ V- 12VDC OUTPUT 2 12VDC OUTPUT 1 TP TAMPER C NO C NC BATT OK AC OK FORM B CONTACTS (50mA max) PGM Connection i Switching inductive loads that can produce high back EMF voltages or large voltage induced spikes can cause the Intelligent Power Supply to behave unexpectedly and should be avoided. A suitable isolation circuit must be installed between the relay contacts of the Intelligent Power Supply and the inductive load. The outputs used for both PGMs are rated for low power use only (50mA, 12V Max). Incorrect use may cause erroneous faults or serious damage to the Intelligent Power Supply and will VOID ALL WARRANTIES OR GUARANTEES. 14 PRT-PSU-DIN-2A Protege DIN Rail 2A Intelligent Power Supply Installation Manual January 2013

15 8.2 Offline Mode Until connection to any Protege System Controller is established, the outputs of the Intelligent Power Supply operate in Offline Mode. While in offline mode, the 2 outputs function as status outputs. In addition to the comprehensive front panel diagnostic indicators, these status outputs offer additional information that can aid the installer in diagnosing faults and conditions. AC Fail Status Output The AC Fail Status Output has a Solid State relay. The output relay contacts disconnect (Normally Open) when AC power is removed and the unit remains running on backup battery power. Upon restoring AC power, the output relay will revert back to its default state (Normally Closed). The connection example above shows monitoring of the AC Status set up in conjunction with a Protege DIN Rail 16 Zone Input Expander. 16 Battery Fail Status Output The Battery Fail Status Output has a Solid State relay. The output relay contacts connect (Normally Closed) when either the backup battery has been disconnected, or when the Power Supply is running on backup battery power without AC power and the backup battery voltage drops below 11.2V. Upon reconnecting a backup battery with a voltage greater than 12.5V, the output relay will revert back to its default state (Normally Open). The connection example above shows monitoring of the Battery Status set up in conjunction with a Protege DIN Rail 16 Zone Input Expander. The outputs used for both the AC Fail and Battery Fail Status Outputs are rated for low power use only (50mA, 12V Max). 17 9 Intelligent Monitoring The Intelligent Power Supply is able to relay information about critical system voltages, currents and temperature to the Protege Integrated System Controller by registering as an Analog Expander module on the Protege network. The Protege Integrated System Controller can then store these values in system registers that can be viewed live from the Protege System Management Suite. 9.1 Monitoring Setup The Intelligent Power Supply will register with the Protege Integrated System Controller as an Analog Expander module, AExxx. The channels for each Intelligent Power Supply will monitor: Channel 1: Voltage at V1+ output Channel 2: Voltage at V2+ output Channel 3: Battery voltage Channel 4: Total current i The Log Channel Data option may also be selected to view the raw data as it is received in the event log. However, this will create a large amount of events and should only be used for verifying the reception of data. 18 10 Address Configuration The address of the Intelligent Power Supply is configured via programming and will require entry of the module serial number. The serial number can be found on the identification sticker as shown in the example below. 19 11 LED Indicators The Intelligent Power Supply includes comprehensive front panel diagnostic indicators that can aid the installer in diagnosing faults and conditions. In some cases an indicator may have multiple meanings depending on the status indicator display at the time Status Indicator The Status indicator displays module status of the Intelligent Power Supply. State Continuous fast flash (green) Continuous slow flash (green) Description Module attempting registration with controller Module successfully registered with controller i Single flash (red) Module communications activity When the fault and status indicators are flashing alternately, the module is in the identification mode, enabling the installer to easily identify the module in question. Upon either a module update or the identification time period set expiring, the module will return to normal operation Fault Indicator The Fault indicator is lit any time the module is operating in a non-standard mode. 20 11.3 Power Indicator The Power indicator is lit whenever the correct module input voltage is applied across the AC input terminals. 21 11.7 Over Current Indicator The Over Current indicator will show the status of the output current for both V1+ and V2+. State Description Constantly on Output current exceeded. 22 12 Error Code Indication When the Intelligent Power Supply attempts to register or communicate with the system controller a registration error can be generated indicating that it was not successful Error Code Display The following table is only valid if the FAULT indicator is CONSTANTLY ON and the STATUS indicator is FLASHING RED. If the fault indicator is FLASHING the Intelligent Power Supply requires a firmware update or is currently in firmware update mode. The status indicator will FLASH RED with the error code number. The error code number is shown with a 250ms ON and OFF period (duty cycle) with a delay of 1.5 seconds between each display cycle. Flash Error Description Unknown Error Code The error code returned by the system controller could not be understood by the Intelligent Power Supply. Contact Integrated Control Technology. Firmware Version The firmware version on the Intelligent Power Supply is not compatible with the system controller. To clear this error, update the module using the module update application. Address Too High The Intelligent Power Supply address is above the maximum number available on the system controller. To clear this error change the address to one within the range set on the system controller, restart the Intelligent Power Supply by disconnecting the power. Address In Use The Address is already in use by another Intelligent Power Supply. To clear this error set the address to one that is not currently occupied. Use the view network status command to list the attached devices, or the network update command to refresh the registered device list. Controller Secured Registration Not Allowed Controller is not accepting any module registrations. To allow module registrations use the network secure command to change the secure setting to not secured. Serial Number Fault The serial number in the device is not valid. Return the unit to the distributor for replacement. Locked Device The Intelligent Power Supply or system controller is a locked device and cannot communicate on the network.
