1 SCTE MemberLINK Message Boards Document Notes: Items Bold and Italicized correspond to a red action arrow where you could/should click. Items Underlined indicate an action that you can accomplish. Section One Logging In 1. Visit and enter your SCTE username and password a. If you are not sure of your SCTE username or password, click the HELP link to get your information sent to you at your address on record with SCTE 2. 2 3. A new window will open, if you are a first time visitor to the message boards, agree to the terms and conditions of the message boards by clicking the check box and then the register button Figure 2 -Terms and Conditions Click on the I agree check box Click the register button 2 P a g e

4 Section Two - Personal Information Setup 1. Take a minute to complete your online identity and choose settings by clicking on the My Controls link at the top. This will enable other members to learn more about you as you begin to post on the boards. Figure 4 - My Controls 2. The My Controls section allows you to add additional personal information by clicking on Edit Profile Information here you can add OPTIONAL information about yourself such as birth date, interests, instant messaging accounts etc that will be displayed only within the MemberLINK message boards and not the main SCTE membership profile. 5 3. Also under My Controls section, you can add additional information that other members will see when they view your MemberLINK Boards Profile. This is adjusted by clicking Edit Personal Portal Information. The Notification Options controls if you want to be notified when someone has added comments to your profile page or added you to their friends list. The Moderation Options controls if you want to allow profile feedback and if you require moderation of friends adding you to their collection of friends. The Personal Statement box will display favorite sayings, quotes or other unique pieces of information about you on your MemberLINK profile page. When you have finished adjusting your settings, click the Save Settings button. Figure 6 - Personal Portal/Homepage Info Save your settings 5 P a g e
6 4. If you wish to create a signature for your postings you can click the Edit Signature link and key in your signature this will automatically appear on each posting you make. Similar to signatures in your client. Name, company, title, contact information, and company website address are typical items to include in a signature. When finished, click the Update my Signature button. Figure 7 - Edit/Create Your Signature Prepare your signature 6 P a g e
7 5. An avatar (image that represents you) can be added by clicking on the Edit Avatar Settings link. Be sure the image is.gif,.jpg, or.png and the size is no larger than 90 x 90 pixels (and no more than 50KB in space). When selecting to use an avatar, a preloaded image can be selected from the gallery or you may upload your own avatar (that conforms to the guidelines outlined in the terms and conditions). Click the Go! button to browse the gallery and choose the system based images. Selecting your own avatar can be done by entering the URL to your online image or click the Browse... button to upload your saved image. When you have completed your selection click the Update Avatar button to save your choices. Figure 8 - Set Your Avatar Choose your avatar 7 P a g e
8 6. If you wish to add a personal photo, click the Change Personal Photo link. This image will be displayed on your profile page in MemberLINK message boards. Figure 9 - Set your Photo Select your photo 7. To setup your notification of board activity, click the Settings link. After checking the settings you wish to enable/disable, click the Amend my settings. Figure Notification Settings Save your settings Set your options 8 P a g e
9 8. The boards have the ability for you to create a group of people you frequently communicate with on the boards. After you click on Manage Friend List, click on the Go to the member list link under the Find Friends section. Figure 11 - Friends Management (1) Search for other SCTE members 9 P a g e
10 a. This link will take you to where you can search for the individual that you wish to add to your friends list. i. To complete the search enter a part of the person s name that you wish to look for, for example Hayes. Then change the search criteria drop down box to contains, then click the Go! button. 11 b. Locate the name of your friend. Hover your mouse over the name and click on the down arrow that appears next to the image or image place holder of that individual (see the example below). Click the Add as Friend option. A window will pop-up and will confirm the member added to your list of friends. 12 9. If you wish to private message someone in your friends list, click the My Friends link, then in the pop up window click the mail envelope next to the friend you wish to private message. 13 a. This will open the private message editor (note: clicking Track this message will have an sent to you when the recipient responds): Figure 16 - My Friends Private Msg. Be notified in your of replies to your private message 13 P a g e
14 b. You can also begin a private message by clicking on the drop down next to the individual s name in their profile (that they have posted on the boards). Figure 17 - Member Profile Shortcuts Another way to begin a private message 14 P a g e
15 Return to the boards home page Section Three Posting on the Boards 1. Now that you have completed your profile you are ready to post on the boards! Click the MemberLINK logo at the top to return to the list of boards. Figure 18 - Returning to MemberLINK Home 2. A grey globe means you have seen everything in that board, a red globe indicates there is a new posting you have not viewed. Figure 19 - Navigating the Boards No new postings flag New posting flag (red) 3. To select a particular board click the name you wish to view. This will take you to all the postings under that topic. 16 4. The view of the topic on the board will display all of the postings to date and allows you to do several important tasks: a. Begin a new topic for discussion Figure 20 - Viewing a Board Sub-Topic Post a new topic or thread b. 17 This will present you with your options on this particular forum. Make your selection then click the Proceed button: Figure Link Options Save your preference 17 P a g e
18 5. If you do not frequent any particular main section, you can minimize sections by clicking the red minus. To restore a board s view to full view (maximize). Click the plus sign. Figure 23 - Minimize Boards Minimize a board 18 P a g e
19 6. To view the last posting, click on the title of the posting in the Last Post Info section. This will take you to that posting in the latest thread. Figure 24 - View Last Posting View the last posting on that board Last post on the board Reply to a posting Fast Reply Button 7. If you wish to reply to the posting: a. Quote/Reply Best used to pinpoint something in a previous post. Displayed below each post in a topic, there is a Quote button. Pressing this button will allow you to reply to a topic, and have the text from a particular reply quoted in your own reply. When you choose Quote, an extra text field will appear below the main text input box to allow you to edit the content of the post being quoted. b. Fast Reply Best used for simple reply to postings. Clicking this will open up a posting box on the topic view screen, cutting down on the time required to load the main posting screen. Click the Fast Reply button to 19 P a g e
20 expand the reply box and type the post inside of there. Although the fast reply box is not expanded by default, you can choose the option to have it expanded by default, from the board settings section of your control panel. Pressing the More Options button will take you to the normal posting screen. c. Add Reply Continues will continue the discussion thread and does not quote or include previous posting points or questions. 20 P a g e
21 d. Editing Your Posts - Above any posts that you have made, you will see an Edit button used to edit your postings. When editing you may see an option to Add the Edit by line in this post?. If you tick this then it will show up in the posts that it has been edited and the time at which it was edited. Note: If this option does not appear, then the edit by line will always be added to the post. If you are unable to see the edit button displayed on each post that you have made, then the administrator may have prevented you from editing posts, or the time limit for editing may have expired. 22 8. To begin a new topic click on the board you wish to post your question (for example, SCTE Centric), then the subtopic that matches your question (for example, Certification). From there, click the New Topic button to begin your posting. Fill out the necessary fields, (posting body, file upload, and posting options) to check your work click Preview Post, otherwise click Post New Topic to post immediately. NOTE: If you wish to perform a spell check, you will need to use a browser addon. Internet Explorer users will be prompted to download IESpell ( and Firefox users versions 2.0 and higher have type-as-you-go spell checking (no download is required).
