1 KIN 147 Lab Practical Mid-term: Ground Reaction Force (GRF) Data Analysis Excel analyses work much better on PCs than on Macs (especially older Macs) Your goal is to correctly analyze GRF data Analyzing the CMJAS GRF Data from the First Force Plate o Open the Microsoft Excel file called KIN 147 GRF Data Analysis Template Under the File dropdown menu, select the Save As command Rename your file as follows: Your Name KIN 147 Lab Practical Mid-term CMJAS GRFz Data Analysis - Force Plate 2 Click on the Save button o You will be analyzing the participant s GRF data files. Click on the Dropbox link to the KIN147 Student Data sent by to you from Dr. Kao (suggestion: bookmark this link for use on future labs) Click on folder for this lab Click on GRF Data folder Click on your group s folder Click on the first file with the participant s name on it The file should open online In upper right corner of the screen, you will see a blue Download dropdown menu Click on the dropdown arrow Select direct download The file should open Save the file to a new folder on your desktop o Open Microsoft Excel Click on the File menu In the dropdown list, click on Open In the Open dialog box, navigate to the new folder you created on your desktop Make sure you are displaying All Files Double-click on the.csv file you want to analyze Select the cell underneath the following labels Second Force, Fz, and N. the Ctrl key and press the key. 2 o Select the tab at the bottom of the worksheet labeled Digital Filtering fc=10 Select cell G4 Hold down the Ctrl key and type the letter v For PC users, hold down the Ctrl key and press the key. For Mac users, hold down the Command key and press the key. Press the key 2 times Hold down the shift key and Press the key 3 times For PC users, Ctrl key and press the key. For Mac users, simultaneously hold down the shift key AND the Command key and press the key. Hold the down the Ctrl key press the D key. Select cell F4 Type in the value 0 Press the enter key Select cell G5 o For PC users, hold down the Ctrl key and press the key. For Mac users, hold down the Command key and press the key. o Press the key 1 time the Ctrl key and press the key. For Mac users, Command key and press the key. Under the Home tab, click on the word Fill o Select the word Series o In the box next to the word Step Value, type in o Click on the OK button o Creating Charts Of Your Data GRFZ Data Select cells K4 and L4 the Ctrl key and press the key. For Mac users, Command key and press the key. o For PC users, select the Insert tab. Click on the Insert Scatter (X,Y) or Bubble Chart icon. Select Scatter with Smooth Lines. o For Mac users, select the green Charts tab in the toolbar. Click on the Scatter icon. A drop down menu will appear. Select Smooth Line Scatter. You need to move the horizontal axis to the bottom of the graph Move the mouse pointer over the vertical axis of your GRFz graph until a text box appears with the following words: Vertical (Value) Axis Perform a right mouse click On the menu that appears, select Format Axis 2

3 Find the following words Horizontal axis crosses o Select Axis value o Type in the minimum GRF value on the vertical axis scale (e.g., -50) Trim the horizontal axis Exam the participant s GRFz data Find the time when the participant left the ground (e.g., ) o Subtract 1 second from this time o Round down to the nearest whole number (e.g. 11) Find the time the participant makes contact with the ground at landing (e.g., ) o Add 1 second from this time o Round this number up to the nearest whole number (15) Move the mouse pointer over the horizontal axis of each graph until a text box appears with the following words: Horizontal (Value) Axis Perform a right mouse click On the menu that appears, select Format Axis In the window that appears, type in the time when the participant started the squat (e.g., 11) in the box labeled minimum and type in the time the participant stood up (e.g., 15) in the box labeled maximum o If you have selected the correct values for trimming the horizontal axis, the jump GRFz data will be near the center of the graph Remove the legend Select the (Series 1) Label in the legend Hit the Delete key Add appropriate chart title and axis labels Select the GRFz Chart (PC users, follow the instructions below) o Select the Design toolbar underneath the words Chart Tools Click on Primary Vertical Click on Primary Horizontal 3

4 Type in the following: Lab Practical Mid-term CMJAS GRFz Data Analysis - Force Plate 2 Filtered (fc=10) Select the GRFz Chart (Mac users, follow the instructions below) o Select the purple Chart Layout tab next to the green Charts tab o A drop down menu will appear, select Vertical Axis Title Select on Rotated Title o A drop down menu will appear, select Horizontal Axis Title Select on Title Below Axis o Click on the icon that says Chart Titles o A drop down menu will appear, select Title Above Chart Type in the following: Lab Practical Mid-term CMJAS GRFz Data Analysis - Force Plate 2 Filtered (fc=10) o Save the file Analyzing the Drop Landing GRF Data from the Second Force Plate o Open the Microsoft Excel file called KIN 147 GRF Data Analysis Template Under the File dropdown menu, select the Save As command Rename your file as follows: Your Name KIN 147 Lab Practical Mid-term Drop Landing Regular GRFz Data Analysis - Force Plate 2 Click on the Save button o You will be analyzing your GRF data files. 6 o Creating Charts of Your Data GRFz Data Select cells K4 and L4 the Ctrl key and press the key. For Mac users, Command key and press the key. o For PC users, select the Insert tab. 7 Add appropriate chart title and axis labels Select the GRFz Chart (PC users, follow the instructions below) o Select the Design toolbar underneath the words Chart Tools Click on Primary Vertical Click on Primary Horizontal Type in the following: Lab 04 Drop Landing Regular GRFz Data Analysis - Force Plate 2 Filtered (fc=10) Select the GRFz Chart (Mac users, follow the instructions below) o Select the purple Chart Layout tab next to the green Charts tab o A drop down menu will appear, select Vertical Axis Title Select on Rotated Title o A drop down menu will appear, select Horizontal Axis Title Select on Title Below Axis o Click on the icon that says Chart Titles o A drop down menu will appear, select Title Above Chart Type in the following: Lab 04 Drop Landing Regular GRFz Data Analysis - Force Plate 2 Filtered (fc=10) o Save the file o Go to the document KIN 147 Lab Practical Mid-term Submittal Instructions to submit your lab work. 7
