How to use the HTC Desire C mobile devices Orientation First, a quick overview of your primary buttons and areas of your phone. A B C D E F G H A) Headphone Jack B) Power Hold down to power your phone on or off. If your phone is on, press normally to lock or unlock your phone. Unlocking will also require an upward swipe on the ring that appears at the bottom of the screen C) Volume Control D) Touch Screen E) USB Connector/Charger Connector F) Back touch button to go back to the previous screen G) Home touch button to return to home screen H) Recent touch button to view recent apps. Select a recent app from here to reopen it. Also, note the Menu Key, which looks like a 4x4 dots square ( ) just above the Home Key (G). This is on the bottom edge of the Touch Screen. The Menu Key will open a list of all apps installed on your phone. If you cannot find a particular app on the home screen, open and search through your menus for the app you want.

Lock, Unlock & Power To unlock your phone, first wake it up if it is on a black screen by pressing the power button. Your screen should light up with a ring on the bottom. Touch and drag this ring up to unlock your phone. If your phone does not light up when you press the power button, it is likely powered off rather than asleep. To power on your phone hold down the power button for about 5-10 seconds until the screen lights up and it starts booting up. Your phone will be set to auto-sleep after a minute or so of inactivity. If you want to force-lock the phone, just press the power button. If you want to force your phone to fully power down, hold down the power button until you see a menu giving you the option to Power Off/Airplane Mode/Restart. Power off will shut down your phone Airplane mode will deactivate your connectivity (phone and network) but leave the device powered on. You can still use apps that do not require any networking in Airplane Mode. To turn Airplane Mode back off, simply hold the power button down again until you are presented with the menu option to turn it off. Restart will simply restart your phone. This will typically only be used if you are experiencing great slowness or if an app freezes and you need to restart to flush the phones memory. Any time you are unlocking or logging into your phone from powering on, restarting, or turning off airplane mode, you will be asked to enter your PIN. Managing Contacts On the HTC phones, Contacts are managed under an app called People. This can be found under the Menu Key and scrolling through the apps pages until you find it (these are listed alphabetically). To add a contact, open the People app, and at the top you will see a + Add button. If you are presented with a warning regarding Outlook, press OK. This is just informing you that your phone contacts will not automatically sync with your Outlook contacts. If you do not want to see this message every time you add a contact, tick Do not ask me again before pressing OK. This is the Add contact screen: A) Type in the name of your contact in the name box at the top. B) Leave the Contact Type field as Phone C) Type in the number in the appropriate field. D) For additional phone fields, press the + button on the header. E) If you wish, you can also enter an address for the contact for reference, though as a general rule, the HTCs won t be set up for ing from your carersvictoria.org.au address When done, press Save, or to discard, press Cancel.

Make Phone Calls To make a phone call, press the phone icon in the bottom left of the touch screen on the home page. Once in the call screen, you will be presented with a keypad on the bottom, and your contacts on top. You can use either method to select your number, and then press the green CALL button on the bottom. Messaging (SMS) SMS Messaging is accessed via the message button on the bottom right of the touch screen on the home page. The 2 nd image below is what your message box will look like for first use (assuming you haven t had a phone ported over that brought your message history). As you use your Messaging the No Messages Found window will fill up with your recently messaged people. A) Search click here and type in a name to search for messages from a particular user B) Compose click here to compose a new message. You will then be prompted to put in a user or phone number and the message body C) Menu click here for settings, sorting, and other options. D) Message Window As you use Messaging, the Message Window will show (as a default) your most recent messages by recipient. You can tap on one of the messages shown here to reply or start a new message to that user.

Tethering (Using the HTC as a Wireless Router for a laptop) If you are going to tether a laptop to your HTC wirelessly for internet connection, go to the Menu Key, and find the icon for Wi-Fi Hot Spot (icons are listed alphabetically). Read and tap OK. We suggest that you do not change the settings here, but you will need to scroll down and take note of the password (A), which should be a string of numbers and letters, such as 0E69DBBE85F84. This will be the password that you have to type in on your laptop once you try to connect. Keep this secure. This password will not change unless you manually configure a new password on this screen. To turn on the Wi-Fi tethering capability, tap the tick box next to Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot (B) at the top of this settings screen. Note: If the keyboard pops up obscuring your view of the screen, tap the Back button (<) on the bottom of your device to hide the keyboard. Now that you have enabled your mobile to provide a hotspot, you need to connect with your laptop (or wireless device). These instructions will support WIN XP and WIN 7 laptops. Windows XP First make sure your wireless is turned on. Depending on your laptop the wireless on/off switch can be located in several different places. There will typically be either an on/off switch on the front or side edge of the base of the laptop, or on newer laptops, it can often be found between on the base between the keyboard and screen. In the system tray (icons near the clock in the bottom right) find the Wireless Network icon and double click. NOTE: Alternatively you can click on the Start Menu > Connect To > Wireless Network Connection. When the window opens, click the View Wireless Networks Button.

Now you will need to connect to the HTC device. If your Wireless Network hasn t detected the HTC automatically, you will need to click on Refresh Network List. Once HTC is detected, make sure it is highlighted and click on the Connect button. You will be prompted to enter and confirm the wireless Password. This will be the password that you looked up in the Portable Wi-Fi hotspot settings window on your HTC. You should now be connected and the Wireless Network Window will display as below. You can close this Wireless Network window while you work and it will stay connected. When you are done networking, re-open the Wireless Networks window, and click the button, which will now say Disconnect.

Windows 7 First make sure your wireless is turned on. Depending on your laptop the wireless on/off switch can be located in several different places. There will typically be either an on/off switch on the front or side edge of the base of the laptop, or on newer laptops, it can often be found between on the base between the keyboard and screen. In the system tray (icons near the clock in the bottom right) find the Wireless Network icon and click. Now you will need to connect to the HTC device. If your Wireless Network hasn t detected the HTC automatically, you will need to click to refresh your Network List. Once HTC is detected, click it to expand, and click on the Connect button. (click to refresh list if necessary) You will be prompted to enter the wireless Password. This will be the password that you looked up in the Portable Wi-Fi hotspot settings window on your HTC. You should now be connected and the Wireless Network Window will display as below. Click away from this window to hide it from view. When you are done networking, re-open the Wireless Networks window from the same icon on the system tray, click the HTC Portable Hotspot option and the Disconnect button will now appear for you to click. Tips for tethering Using your HTC device as a wireless hotspot will drain your battery far more quickly than normal phone usage. ITC Team suggests that when possible, you have your HTC device on the charger while using it as a wireless hotspot. Also, for the same power saving reasons, it is best practice to disable the HTC wireless sharing when not in use. To disable the Tethering function, go back to Menu Key > Wi-Fi Hotspot, and untick the box to turn off.

Transferring Photos and Data between your HTC and PC or Laptop If you have Photos or Data saved on your phone and would like to get them moved to a PC, first connect HTC Desire C to your computer using the supplied USB cable. On the Choose a connection type screen, select Disk drive, and then tap Done. On your computer, the storage card is recognized as a removable disk. You should get a pop up on your PC, choose to Open folder to view files. Navigate to the removable disk and open it. Now copy the files from the storage card to a folder in your computer. After copying the files, unmount the removable disk (that is, the connected HTC Desire C) as required by your computer s operating system to safely remove HTC Desire C. If you have any queries on how to safely remove a USB drive, please contact the ICT Team. More Help The HTC website provides User Guides, Troubleshooting Guides, How-To Videos, and FAQs if you are interested in learning more about the functions to get the most out of your phone. The guides can be found here:
