1 U Ford F-350 Super Duty 6.7L Eng XLT REQUESTED INFORMATION DTC U0101: LOST COMMUNICATION WITH TCM DTC U0101: LOST COMMUNICATION WITH TCM Description: Possible Causes: Diagnostic Aids: This DTC sets when the PCM does not receive the transmission control module (TCM) message within the defined amount of time. Communication error Network DTC concerns occur during module to module communication. Refer to the appropriate Module Communications Network article, Communication Network DTC Chart to continue diagnosis. Application Key On Engine Off Key On Engine Running Continuous Memory All GO to PINPOINT TEST AE. Pinpoint Test BB: DTC U0101:00 Normal Operation DTC U0101:00 (Lost Communication With TCM: No Sub Type Information) - sets in continuous memory in the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) if data messages received from the Transmission Control Module (TCM) over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) are missing for 5 seconds or longer. This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following: TCM (diesel engine) PCM (gasoline engines) IPC PINPOINT TEST BB: DTC U0101:00 BB1 VERIFY THE CUSTOMER CONCERN Verify there is an observable symptom present. Is an observable symptom present? 1/8

2 Yes : GO to BB2. No : The system is operating normally at this time. The DTC may have been set BB2 CHECK THE COMMUNICATION NETWORK Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Network Test. Carry out the network test. Does the TCM module pass the network test? Yes : GO to BB3. No : REFER to MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK. BB3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE IPC SELF-TEST Check for recorded IPC DTCs from the self-test. Is DTC U3003:16 or DTC U3003:17 recorded? Yes : For DTC U3003:16, GO to PINPOINT TEST BK. For DTC U3003:17, GO to PINPOINT TEST BL. No : GO to BB4. BB4 RECHECK THE IPC DTCs NOTE: If new modules were installed prior to the DTC being set, the module configuration may be incorrectly set during the Programmable Module Installation (PMI) or the PMI may not have been carried out. Clear the DTCs. Repeat the IPC self-test. Is DTC U0101:00 still present? Yes : GO to BB5. No : The system is operating correctly at this time. The DTC may have been set 2/8

3 BB5 CHECK FOR DTC U0101:00 SET IN OTHER MODULES Clear all DTCs. Ignition OFF. Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Self-Test. Retrieve the continuous memory DTCs from all modules. Is DTC U0101:00 set in the ABS module? Yes : INSTALL a new TCM (diesel engine) or PCM (gasoline engines). For TCM, REFER to Transmission Service Components - Exploded View, External Components in AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION - TORQSHIFT. For PCM, REFER to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS - GASOLINE ENGINES. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. No : INSTALL a new IPC. REFER to Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC). TEST the system for normal operation. Pinpoint Test L: DTC U0101 Normal Operation DTC U0101 (Lost Communication With Transmission Control Module (TCM)) - sets in continuous and on-demand memory in the ABS module if data messages received, such as transmission range, from the Transmission Control Module (TCM) are missing for more than 5 seconds. For a complete list of all network messages, refer to MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK. This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following: Communication network concern TCM ABS module PINPOINT TEST L: DTC U0101 L1 VERIFY THE CUSTOMER CONCERN Verify that there is an observable symptom present. Is an observable symptom present? 3/8

4 Yes : GO to L2. No : The system is operating normally at this time. The DTC may have been set L2 CHECK THE COMMUNICATION NETWORK Using a scan tool, carry out the Network Test. Does the module pass the Network Test? Yes : GO to L3. No : REFER to MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK. L3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE ABS MODULE SELF-TEST Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Self Test - ABS Module. Is DTC B1317 or DTC B1318 recorded? Yes : For DTC B1317, GO to PINPOINT TEST A. For DTC B1318, GO to PINPOINT TEST B. No : GO to L4. L4 RECHECK THE ABS MODULE DTCs Using a scan tool, clear the ABS module DTCs. Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Self Test - ABS Module. Is DTC U0101 still present? Yes : GO to L5. No : The system is operating correctly at this time. The DTC may have been set L5 CHECK FOR DTC U0101 SET IN OTHER MODULES Using a scan tool, clear all CMDTCs. Ignition OFF. 4/8

5 Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Self Test - All CMDTCs. Is DTC U0101:00 or DTC U0101 set in more than one module? Yes : INSTALL a new TCM (diesel engine) or PCM (gasoline engines). For PCM, REFER to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS - GASOLINE ENGINES. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. No : INSTALL a new ABS module. REFER to ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS) MODULE. TEST the system for normal operation. Pinpoint Test W: DTC U0101:00 Normal Operation DTC U0101:00 (Lost Communication With TCM: No Sub Type Information) - sets in continuous memory in the Transfer Case Control Module (TCCM) if data messages received from the Transmission Control Module (TCM) over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) are missing for 5 seconds or longer with ignition in RUN and battery voltage in range. This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following: TCM (diesel engine) PCM (gasoline engines) TCCM PINPOINT TEST W: DTC U0101:00 W1 VERIFY THE CUSTOMER CONCERN Verify there is an observable symptom present. Is an observable symptom present? Yes : GO to W2. No : The system is operating normally at this time. The DTC may have been set W2 CHECK THE COMMUNICATION NETWORK Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Network Test. Carry out the network test. Does the TCM module pass the network test? 5/8

6 Yes : GO to W3. No : REFER to MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK. W3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE TCCM SELF-TEST Check for recorded TCCM DTCs from the self-test. Is DTC P0562:00 or P0563:00 recorded? Yes : GO to PINPOINT TEST G. No : GO to W4. W4 RECHECK THE TCCM DTCs NOTE: If new modules were installed prior to the DTC being set, the module configuration may be incorrectly set during the Programmable Module Installation (PMI) or the PMI may not have been carried out. Clear the DTCs. Repeat the TCCM self-test. Is DTC U0101:00 still present? Yes : GO to W5. No : The system is operating correctly at this time. The DTC may have been set W5 CHECK FOR DTC U0101:00 SET IN OTHER MODULES Clear all DTCs. Ignition OFF. Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Self-Test. 7 TCM, REFER to Transmission Service Components - Exploded View, External Components in AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION - TORQSHIFT. For PCM, REFER to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS - GASOLINE ENGINES. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. No : INSTALL a new TCCM. REFER to TRANSFER CASE CONTROL MODULE (TCCM). TEST the system for normal operation. REPEAT the self-test. Pinpoint Test Y: DTC U0101:00 Normal Operation DTC U0101:00 (Lost Communication With TCM: No Sub Type Information) - a continuous memory DTC set by the ABS module if the transmission range data should be received from the Transmission Control Module (TCM) is missing for 5 seconds or longer. This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following: Communication network concern TCM ABS module PINPOINT TEST Y: DTC U0101:00 Y1 VERIFY THE CUSTOMER CONCERN Verify there is an observable symptom present. Is an observable symptom present? Yes : GO to Y2. No : The system is operating normally at this time. The DTC may have been set Y2 CHECK THE COMMUNICATION NETWORK Connect the scan tool. Using a scan tool, carry out the Network Test. Does the TCM pass the Network Test? Yes : GO to Y3. No : REFER to MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK. Y3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE ABS MODULE AND TCM SELF- 7/8

8 TESTS Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Self Test - ABS Module. Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Self Test - TCM. Is DTC P1397:00 (or B11E8:16) or (or B11E8:17) recorded? Yes : For ABS module DTC B11E8:16, GO to PINPOINT TEST P. For ABS module DTC B11E8:17, GO to PINPOINT TEST Q. For TCM DTCs, REFER to AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION - TORQSHIFT. No : GO to Y4. Y4 CHECK FOR DTCs U0101:00 OR U0101 SET IN OTHER MODULES Using a scan tool, clear all CMDTCs. Ignition OFF. Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Self Test - All CMDTCs. Is DTC U0101:00 or DTC U0101 set in more than one module? Yes : INSTALL a new TCM. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the ABS module selftest. No : INSTALL a new ABS module. REFER to ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS) MODULE. TEST the system for normal operation. 8/8
