Unless explicitly stated, there are NO intended errors and NO trick questions. If in doubt, ask! You have 75 minutes to work. Now, take a moment to relax. If you don't immediately see how to do something, THINK! Don't panic! True/False (2 points each): Correct the statement if it is false, but no not simply negate the sentence. 1. The notation 1 KB denotes 1 kazillion bytes of memory. 2. The flip-flop circuit is a vital component of a processor s ALU. 3. Consider the following digital circuit. Show the output of every logical gate if p=0 and q=1 at the beginning of the circuit.

3 EXTRA CREDIT: Try a few more input bit patterns and see if you can discover exactly what this circuit does. 4. Consider the following operation: Perform this operation as a computer would do it, showing all work. That is: (a.) Convert -9 to binary using two s complement notation. Show your answer using 7 bits. (E.g., 3 10 would be ) (b.) Convert 27 to binary. Again, use 7 bits. 5. (c.) Add the two binary numbers. (d.) Convert your answer back to decimal. 6. Answer each of the following questions related to your web authoring work in lab: a. Write HTML code to display your name as a level-one header.

4 b. What is the FTP process? Give a specific example of when you ve used it this semester. c. What is the complete URL of the home page for your web site for this class? 7. Fill in the blanks: The fetch step of a processor s machine cycle fetches from and puts it. 8. For these two questions, you don t necessarily have to calculate the final answer, just show how the calculation would be accomplished. (a.) Suppose you use an app on your phone to record a 30 minute interview for a research project using the following settings: 8 KHz sampling rate 8-bit sound (i.e., 8 bits per sample) How much memory would this recording require (in bytes)? (b.) If a term paper consisting of 25 pages, each containing 35 lines of 95 symbols each (counting each space as a symbol), was to be encoded using ASCII, how many bytes of storage space would be required? 9. (a.) What does the acronym CPU stand for? (b.) What are the three main components of the CPU and what do they do?

5 10. For each of the following tasks, identify which social media application we have studied this semester would be most appropriate, and briefly explain why. (In each case there is a best answer, but different answers may be acceptable based on the thoroughness of explanation.) Be specific in your explanation of why you selected one tool over others. (a.) View photos of the band taken by other fans at a concert, while the concert is happening. (b.) Identify a suitable gift idea for your best friend s birthday. (c.) Identify someone at Furman who is knowledgeable about social media, so you can have a discussion about Socialnomics. 11. Qualman advises businesses in Socialnomics that consumers want to take ownership of your brand; let them! (a.) Give a specific example (either from the book or one of your own) of how a consumer might take ownership of a corporate brand using social media.

6 (b.) Why would a company be reluctant to do this? And why (according to Qualman) should they embrace it instead? Implementation: (8 points each) Answer both questions. Write PHP code that will implement solutions to each of these problems. The code need not be syntactically perfect, but it can t vary too greatly from correct syntax. 1. Suppose Furman decided to abolish the +/- grading system, awarding an A for any score in the 90s, a B for any score in the 80s, and so on. Write a segment of PHP code that will look at the value of a variable $score, which contains a number between 0 and 100, inclusive, and display the corresponding grade for that score. (Don t worry about how the number was assigned to $score.) 2. Given this form: <form action= sayhello.php method= post > Enter your name: <input type= text name= username ><br> <input type= submit value= Submit! > </form>

7 Write the PHP page sayhello.php so it does the following: a) Prints a greeting using the name that was entered in the form, for example Hello Jane! or Hello Bob! b) Then prints either That s a nice name or You have the same name as me! Which message it prints depends, of course, on whether or not the name entered in the form is the same as your first name.
